I haven't really been following the Cork players strike, but its in the Metro every morning, so keep seeing it. Its seems they were in talks for 9 hours to try and get agreement, pure madness. In my opinion, the manager in question should step aside, because he is never going to get the backing of the players, even if they do agree to play again. If they do not fulfil their next LEague fixture, they will be kicked out. I'd say the sponsors will be thrilled with that. Anyone from Cork in the know on this???
Living and working in cork but def still a limerick man - if the players bestow such power on themselves that htey get to say who is and isnt atheir manager, or selector, tehn the whole sporting hierarchy of gaa is destroyed - whats to stop them giving out about something else next year and wanting the hurling coach sacked, or swedish masseurs as part of teh backroom team, lattes insteas of tea ... Get off their high horses and play ball for christs sake, its an honour to play 4 ure county at any level...and to b able to b part of a county setup that has a realistic chance of playing in a final every other year is a privilege. If u want to c screwed up gaa politics go over the border into limk - we've had problems for years and still took to the field. Would we back the players at liverpool if they said - rafa hit the road or we dont play...i think not - its not how things are done
The players are not against the manager, they are for him.The players are doing whats right and the majority support them. The County board have taken away the right of the manager to pick his own selectors hence the team is essentially picked for them. They basically are doing what Abramovich and the Hearts chairman are doing in football to a lesser degree. County Boards are fossils but unlike the dinosaurs the old guard refuse to hand over power and become extinct and that is prevalent in most if not all Counties.
Sorry, but you are way off the mark in what you are saying there! Do you think its alright for a county chairman to turn up and disrupt hurling training sessions all year long? Do you not think its alright that the county chairman is allowed to barge into the team changing room at half time of a Munster football final to give a team talk, undermine the manager and create a stand-off? Do you not think its alright that the county board are going completely against a winning formula that has seen a footballing and hurling side get to recent All-Ireland finals? The board have lost a grip controlling the Cork team over the past 10 years and its resulted in carnage when it comes to the club scene (the main driving force why these changes are being made). Now they are looking for control back and its only going to throw the Cork team back to the mid-90's when the county was only playing for minor scraps and pride. They are looking to get away with it this year with the footballers, and the hurlers are next in line next year. The players ain't having it and rightly so. Seeing you dishonour them by saying they'll want "the hurling coach sacked, or swedish masseurs as part of the backroom team, lattes instead of tea" shows very little class. I've worked with and met alot of these men over the years and seeing people like you saying stuff like that makes me sick! They are absolute upstanding citizens of society, who put in an unbelievable effort to represent their county and make the supporters proud. They haven't left many supporters down anytime over the past 10 years, and they have no intention of letting it start now.
i know very little about what's going on in Cork GAA at the moment but as you've just stated above something must be seriously wrong if they're risking jeopardising Playing in an Provincial/All Ireland Hurling or Football Final, never mind a League Final..no matter what County you come from that's every young Lad's Dream....
Where to start ? Firstly some excellent point from my fellow rebel Sean. I am a bit on the fence when it comes to this one. I agree with the principal that a manager should select his own players. Also the county secretary is a bit of a Hitler but maybe you gotta be a bit like that to run the county board... and yes that is the secretary running the county board. Is striking the right way to go about it?? The clubs each have a delagate who go to the meetings and club fixtures over the last number of years have been cancelled because of close proximity to intercounty matches... rightly so probably but it sees to have been over the top abit especially with former football manager demanding matches off at the drop of a hat. There was a motion that was voted on that they return to old way of county board choosing selectors and it was passed by a huge majority. the players demanded a re vote which they got .. same result. The manager should probably step aside now as his position is unattainable you gotta feel for him a bit being stuck in the middle. There is also a rumour that sponsorship deal with a drinks co which would interfere with gpa deal is also a sticking point. In the end there are no winners in this except the killkenny hurlers and the kerrry footballers. Both sides are in so deep now its getting harder to back down and I dont see any resolution in sight
a good few Lads i know are due to Fly/Drive/Train down to Cork this Weekend for the Match, have Hotels and all Booked. they're not happy Campers at all cos it looks like the Game's not going to go ahead now....
I'm not a huge GAA fan but I like most people I know of are behind the players on this one. Board out!!(Sound familiar anyone??)
Defo behind the players on this. The new "manager" is a gobshite for taking the job. Apparently a few others are approached and they said no but this fella took it.
The latte thing was just a joke mate - if i have offended any Cork person then i humbly apologise. Also for 'making u sick' - again, mea culpa maxima. As for 'people like me' whatever that means - i dont know YOU, so i dont judge YOU. I
I posted this last year around this date in relation to the footballers and its like Deja Vu. What is in the water down there. The footballers are now talking about going on strike. Its pure mental
It's an absolute mess. The footballers are threatening to go on strike now. There's a march in town today at 3 in protest and there is a very real possibility that we will lose to Dublin in a hurling match tomorrow
Just wondering what the Cork public feel about this shenanigans. Can't see how Gerald McCarthy can remain as manager and Cork still remain competitive. Neither side will back down now as this would be to admit defeat. By the way have the Cork hurlers any chance of beating the Dubs in tomorrows League match? Surely the Dubs must be absolute certs, even at short odds on.
Personally I just feel a bit exasperated about the whole thing.I'm not really strongly for one side or the other as I can see the argument of both the players and the manager. It's a real shame as this particular group of players deserve to go down as legends for what they've achieved between 1999 and now despite all the turmoil and upheavil. This would have been the last chance of All-Ireland glory for Cork hurling legends like Sean Og,Sully,Joe Deane etc. but now it doesn't look like it's going to happen. For me,as soon as I found out that Gerald McCarthy was taking over I knew we'd struggle.I used to help out a fair bit with the training sessions under Donal O'Grady and John Allen but there was never the same aura or confidence under Ger.I feel really bad for him though cos he was a fantastic player and he's a really nice fella. As for the Dublin game,I haven't a clue how it's going to pan out as the current group of Cork players are something of an unknown commodity and none of them play for the top club sides in the county so it will be interesting but I would have to assume that Dublin will win as they've come on leaps and bounds in recent years and now have Anthony Daly at the helm.
Its Frank Murphys (the Chairman) fault, hes as corrupt as Charlie H. The man has made his own contract and will not step down. McCarthy is a shocking coach, in the big games its the players like Cusack etc who are picking the team. At the start of this he wanted to step down but Frank Murphy told him if he did then his business would suffer. See McCarthy supplies the medals and trophies for all the Gaa in Cork, thats his bread and butter and Murphy told him if he goes so does the business. The man is caught in a fight between the players and the Chairman of the county board. It will be sorted soon one way or another, the Dubs will hammer them this weekend and if they keep going the way they are into the All Ireland and when they lose to Tipp in the Munster Championship and whover then in the All-Ireland qualifiers they will have to enter the Christy Ring Cup next year. Imagine how much that will cost Cork Gaa in sponsorship etc.
Frank Murphy is corrupt as **** alrightWhere did you hear that about Gers shop?Hadnt heard that myself but wouldn't put it past frankThats ****in blackmail.
