Picture quality seems to be slightly better with Plasma. TV life is no longer a major issue with Plasmas. LCD picture has improved a lot in the past year or two. If getting a LCD there is a difference in quality between HD ready and Full HD. Full HD is better but dearer and to be honest I'm not sure if you'll notice the difference if you have NTL who have no HD channels.

I think its personal opinion really. I have had both, have an LCD now and would prefer it over the old plasma.
LCD tvs tend to have more vibrant colours and look sharper whereas Plasma screens tend to look a bit more natural which a lot of people prefer.
The main faults either tv have is plasma suffers from picture burn in that if you left say mtv on for a number of hours the MTV logo can burn into the screen and stay there as a ghost logo when you switch channels, LCD tvs suffer for dead pixels where one or two pixels can die and go black which depending on where they are could be a problem but it takes usually years for that to happen.
The footie on the LCD I have looks fantastic in HD, just make sure whatever you get is HD ready 1080i (HD) or 1080p (TrueHD) as opposed to HD compliant because there is a big difference and some salesman may try to pull a swift one on you.
LCD is the future and will probably replace plasma in the future.
