Tough one.

I think the 1986 world cup quarter final (Brazil V France) is the best game Ive ever seen live. Alot had to do with the fact I was 10, this was the first world cup I could clearly remember and that I loved that french team.

A pulsating battle by 2 great sides, Carecas goal, Mullers shot off the post that rebounded to the halfway line, it was hit with such venom, Platini's equaliser, Zicos penalty miss. Brazil keeper Carlos should have been sentoff for a blatant bodycheck on a French forward who was clear through on goal (jumped on his back I think) the referee played on and while the French players protested Brazil went down the other end and almost scored which would have been completely unjust.
Then the penalty shoot out, Socrates misses, Bellones bizzare penalty, off the post, omto Carlos head and into the net, then platini on his birthday turned from hero to villian when he blasted a terrible penalty over the bar. Julio Cesar obliged by hitting the post with his and so, it was left to Luis Fernandez to write his name in world cup folklore.

A tired French team went out to a strong German side in the semis.

I know I should say Istanbul, but it will always be hard recreate that summer evening for me anyway
