Harry Redknapp believes Lyon striker Milan Baros will be a 'terrific' loan signing for Portsmouth.

The European hopefuls are in talks to sign the former Liverpool and Aston Villa forward on loan until the end of the season.

Lyon have confirmed that Baros, or fellow front man Fred, will be leaving the club in January, and Pompey boss Redknapp expects to capture the Czech.

Redknapp said: "He will make a terrific loan because he knows the English game and it would be nice to have him available this weekend, although there is international clearance and other details to be cleared up yet.

    Great opportunity

"But Peter Storrie (Pompey's chief executive) has gone to meet Baros' agent to do a deal and it's a great opportunity to add more quality to our squad.

"We are still short of numbers with our players away at the African Nations Cup and one of them, Kanu, getting injured out there. We don't know yet how bad that injury is, but it seems to be his knee.

"I feel we still need somebody like Baros, who I believe was a Golden Boot winner at the last European Championships for the Czech Republic and I'm very hopeful we will get him.

"Lyon are a good side and they are overloaded with top strikers. The Brazilian Fred can't get in their team either and will cost about 16million euros. I think Tottenham are trying to buy him.

"If I can get Baros I might still look for another loan or buy somebody else if another club comes in and offers me silly money for one of my team."

Meanwhile, after starting Lyon's win over Lorient on Wednesday, Brazilian ace Fred confirmed his intention to stay with the French champions, having also been linked with Spurs and Paris Saint Germain.

Fred told the club's official website: "I stay at Lyon. I am happy to be in the starting XI again, which is proof of trust."

Had 5 quid on him for Top scorer at Euro 2005, 50/1..... about the only good thing I can say about him. Talented, however never lived up to his potential, espically as a team player.

    European Cup Winner though

Portsmouth have wrapped up the signing of former Liverpool striker and long-time target Milan Baros on loan until the end of the season.

Harry Redknapp has openly acknowledged his admiration for the Lyon forward and has now got his man in time to include him in the squad for Pompey's Premier League game with Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

The Czech Republic international has endured a testing period in France but has now secured a return to England barely a year after leaving Aston Villa.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for us to have a look at him,” Redknapp told the club’s official website. “It’s a loan deal until the end of the season and we’ll see how it goes from there.

“He’s a good player who’s played at Liverpool and Aston Villa and he’s been a golden boot winner at The European Championships.

“He’s got good pace and he makes good runs.”

Redknapp has been particularly keen to bolster his attacking options this month with Kanu and John Utaka both currently on African Cup of Nations duty in Ghana.

Pompey have already signed Lassana Diarra and Danijel Subotic in January, as well as recruiting Lucien Aubey on loan from Lens.

    Hi

Remember everyone, he's currenly only on loan so basically they just pay is salary as I understand it .. begs the question, if we got Voronin for free, just pay his wages, who got the better deal here - us or Portsmouth for example ?

To be honest, I'm expecting him to get them a few goals during the remainder of the season - he's not top class, but sorry folks, neither is Portsmouth a top club so it's all about right as I see it.

The is no doubt if they get the ball into the box, he will put them away. He suffered bit under Rafa as he was up front on his own and he is not a worker.
