Quite simply an icon...Happy 70th Birthday. For those who are interested they have dedicated a full day to him on ESPN classic - Sky Channel 429. For the younger members, see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali
Just spotted a programme on BBC 4 that might be worth taping. Missed the 1st showing tonight but it is being repeated on BBC in a few hours at 1:50am.
Some truly amazing pics here http://lightbox.time.com/2012/01/17/happy-birthday-muhammad-ali-70-iconic-images-for-70-years/ I don't know how old I was getting up in the middle of the night with my Dad to watch Ali fight in fuzzy black and white television. He was definitely the most iconic sportsman of my generation.
For those that have BBC i-player or use the ex-pat program to get a UK ip address. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/16600042.stm This Ali programme with the David Frost interviews was excellent. He truly was 'The Greatest.' I had to laugh at him telling David Frost 'you are as dumb as you look ' after playing a practical joke on him in the middle of his recent interview. As a child I remember only two occasions of getting up in the middle of the night to watch TV one was the Apollo moon landing and the other was an Ali fight (but I have no idea which one.)
compare heavy weight boxing now to that era, chalk and cheese. I still reckon a young mike Tyson wud beat ali
Nah he wouldnt have lived with him. Ali had the height, the reach, the chin, the skills and speed to beat tyson. How would Tyson have beaten him by your reckoning?
