Anyone being to Krakow in Poland? Going to a wedding in Gdansk (north Poland) in August and hoping to have few days down south first Any recommendations where to stay, what to do etc. Will hopefully be be there for 2-3 days. Do want to see Auschwitz, which i know will take a day out of this I know alot more people may have being there after June time but will be booking this next month Cheers
Spent 5 days in krakow with the girlfriend last june. Really nice city, loads of excellent restaurants and bars around the city square. Would highly recommend trip to Auschitz and also to the salt mines, the underground church has to be seen to be beleived.
Was on a couple of stag's there a few years ago. Good city with enough to keep you occupied. With it being a stag visit you can imagine we pretty much were on the p1ss and in an irish bar too surprise surprise. As I didnt organise it I cant remember but there was a company we used which picked us up brought us to a plot of high rise land for bit of target shooting and archery extra along with a sit down meal. I'm sure thats not all they do. I'll try look up who it was if your interested. Good spot with decent night life thats not too mad with places to see. Auschwitz wont take a full day. Its a rough ride out of the city but including visiting both main camps and travel you'll be back by mid to late afternoon depending on how early you hit the road. If you're anyway interested in it like myself you'd be mad not to go.
Yeah Auschwitz being one place ive being wanting to go to for long time myself. Heard stories about the place and main reason want to see Krakow too. Would prob head out early as possible in the morning and take as much time as need Salt mines keep popping up online as place to see too. Any ideas on where to stay - hotels/ apartments?
Just got the name there of the one I was in on my 2nd visit. Hotel Wyspianski, modern hotel with a nice bar. Not even a 5 minute walk from the square.Think its on booking, but you cant go wrong with any hotel thats in or close to the main square I reckon.
Typed this all already and the flippin explorer crashed when I went to post it….dont ye just hate when that happens. Anywho… We did 4 days in Krakow in August, after a wedding coincidentally. Beautiful city with a multitude to do. First off youre doing it the right way around, after a polish wedding all we were fit to do for the first day in Krakow was lie in bed trying desperately to breathe. My God those folks know how to party. We stayed in the Hotel Ester, in the Old Jewish quarter. Very nice place, top notch service and grub. Staff couldn’t have been any more helpful, on a few occasions when we were trying to figure out where to go or how to get there the staff would arrive with a city map, and give you taxi number, tram timetables and where to get on and off etc. Then ON the tram we obviously had the lost tourist look and 3-4 passengers took it upon themselves to make sure we got off at the right place, amazingly helpful people. Hotel was middle of the road pricewise, cost about 300 for the 4 nights but well worth it given its central location. Tram line around the corner, and bang slap in the middle of the restaurant area. There’s 8-10 eaterys within 2 minutes walk. Eating out is incredibly cheap. Be told since that there are apartments on the main square that are available to rent all year round, not sure of the price bracket but have be told theyre generally in the €200 per week range. Tram will have you in the main square in 5 minutes, or alternatively go to the stop for the bus/train main depot. On the main plaza theres a building called the “Krakow Gallery” Its actually a huuuuuuge shopping centre. Plenty of Gadgets/lads shops in there too! Auschwitz will take you 6-8 hours depending on which tour you go with so the whole day will be used up. The salt mines is another full day tour, and be aware that its ALL stairs to get down to the very bottom of it – about 1200 of them. Its an elevator back up at least. If you do go there, remember to buy a “camera pass” at the turnstiles or you cant take photos – and it’s a long walk back to get one! Oscar Schindler museum is relatively small, so it’s a quick trip – but well worth the visit. The golf carts that take you on the tours around the city (theres about 15 different ones) can usually be bargained with to do 2-3 tours at the same time for a better rate. One thing we got caught on was the currency. Going over we were reliably informed that they were in the Eurozone so euros would be accepted no worries. They weren’t. Of course we had gone over without any Zlotys, so had to look for a bank to change money in. Worked out in our favour in the long run as we got a far better exchange rate in Poland than was on offer at home. Got 4.11 to the Euro, while it was 3.90 at home. Might not seem a lot, but given how far money goes in Poland, I think it well worth while bringing a small amount of Zloty with you and then changing your cash in a bank over there (NOT the airport obviously). No problems using bank machines over there either btw.
Been there twice, can't recommend it highly enough. Amazing city. No point adding to what the lads have already said, they've pretty much covered the bases!
Heading there with the lads in March ... All tips and advice much appreciated. I'll obviously report back, post my own trip too
I reckon roll on 19 covered everything there Garrett! I certainly couldn't add anymore...makes me wanna go back!!
Yeah been there, lovely spot, I think it has the biggest square in Europe with restaurants themed on food from all over the World. Class. The centre is very service orientated and some of the women were absolute stunners. There were a lot American students there the time I was there, in the discos especially. Plenty of shopping too just off the main square. It's 7/8 Years since I was there but the taxis were unbelievable cheap, don't know if that is still the case or not. Auschwitz definitely worth the trip, will take approx a 9-5 trip to see it properly. I did the salt mines too, I though it was okish but one of the buddies was there another time and he thought it was brilliant. Each to there own I guess. It's not a huge gaff, 3/4 nights would be plenty in my opinion but a lovely spot alright. Would go back.
