Not sure if this has been covered but why do teams wear black tape on their arms instead of proper armbands? Is it that only the captain can wear a proper armband? In my opinion, it looks crap and given the amount of money in the game - it looks cheap. Sorry again if this has been debated before?
Black armbans would probably keep falling down. But on the money thing, it doesnt matter how rich you are, its a business.
I know the reason won't be earth shattering but if the captains armband does not fall down, why would a black one (and no Evra puns please!) do it.
Id say it falls down a few times during a game, i've often seen Stevie fixing it. Maybe the fact that they'd have to be tight around the arm and maybe players dont want something tight around their upper arm. If you notice, the tape is never tight, its always loose and only on the jersey, as in, it doesnt hold the jersey to the arm.
It's just to show respect. It doesnt really matter after that, does it? The black tape does the job and probably stays on better.
Your right that it doesn't matter but I'm sure there is a rule or restriction out there that covers it. I think at tonight's game the ref had a proper black armband and the players didn't. Perhaps it is considered an item of clothing and it's precluded under a rule somewhere. Cheers anyway for the answers.
I might be dreaming, but didn't Harry kewell once wear a proper black "armband" (not tape) and take it off and throw it on the sideline during a game? I'm fairly certain it was kewell.
