This was announced last week, its going to shake things up big time I just hope they don't over price it.
What would be the benefit of using NetFlix as appose to downloading them yourself? I don't know anything about NetFlix.
In a time of recession who honestly is going to subscribe and pay to download movies from an american site, not to mind you'll be putting people out of there jobs that work for xtra vision.
Why pay to rent something from netflix, when you could download for free also. It's the same effort, except your paying for it. That and you can't get cinema releases and the like from netflix. I don't think it will pay off to be honest. Ireland are one of the foremost users of illegal downloads per capita in Europe.
Good to see this, but likewise I'd worry about uptake. Netflix raised their prices recently as well and have lost over 800,000 customers in a quarter.
As if people who are downloading give a f**k about people working in Xtravision. Sure look at the amount of record shops that have closed down in the last few years.
The people who are downloading now don't give a fcuk, downloading a movie and hooking it up to your tv is no easy task for a person who isn't computer savvy, People like John & Mary who like to stay in on the weekend will no longer want to waste petrol money to drive down to xtravision if Netflix becomes available here, because it's a simple as pressing a button. plus you don't have to travel back to the shop in the pissing rain to drop the dvd back. You can't stop the downloaders, I'm a fcuker for it, but xtravision are a local business who employ students/young people part time/full time. Would you like to see them close down ? and have even less part time jobs available for students or young people just out of school.
People who aren't that tech savvy aren't going to be using netflix either. It's not as simple as pushing a button. You still need your laptop set up, your credit card and if you want it on your TV have to set up some way of streaming it. "John and Mary" aren't going to be sitting in on a Saturday night watching a film on a 13" laptop screen. I know there a local business but what I'm saying is people don't care about local business as long as they can get the product at a similar standard for free. It's happened the music industry and now it's happening to the film industry. Of course I wouldn't like to see them closed down. I've been extremely effected by this sort of thing happening first hand. And I am a student working part time in a similar area. But the matter of a fact is, if people who don't really care about the product can get it for free, there not going to pay for it whether that's online or in a local shop.
Good Post, and Id agree with everything in it.People are getting more Tech Savy, Im not saying the whole of Ireland is now, But the older generation are getting more into Techology in my opinion. They are like every one else, Why Pay for it when they can get it for Free?? Regarding Xtravision, Yes it is a good business and they have tried to bring the company forward, By selling other products such as Tv's, Music and even wine in some places, But they are still expensive enough compared to some of the Alternatives other there. Its sad to say, But like chartbusters, Xtravision will be heading that way soon Id imagine in the next 5-10 Years Max.
Think the biggest advantage of this is that you can stream straight to your phone/tablet/PS3/xbox, I'd think about getting it just for this seen as your guaranteed good quality and its only a few clicks to watch a movie after the initial set up rather than searching for a good copy, waiting for it to download and then finding a way to transfer it onto the tv. Only real disadvantage I can really see to it is the fact that Broadband isn't really up to scratch everywhere for HD streaming.
Good point mate, though it won't be the first time that a company will overcharge Irish people for a sub-standard product or service now will it ? As for the comment above about putting Xtravision staff etc out of a job, I think that is sadly the case, though it's inevitable either way, now there are so many torrents available. Likewise, HMV etc will suffer big time, though again their days are also numbered, unless they can diversify massively in the near future ....
