7pm: Why Man Utd called Anfield home 28th Sep 2011 - Latest News http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/7pm-why-man-utd-called-anfield-home Did you know that Manchester United once used Anfield as a home ground? You can find out why on BBC Radio Merseyside between 7-8pm BST on Wednesday night. 'The Forgotten Game' explains how Liverpool did their 'friends' down the East Lancs a favour by allowing them to use the ground to play an English First Division game against double-winners Arsenal in 1971. Manchester United made the request because the FA had banned them from using Old Trafford for two games because of hooliganism the previous season. The programme will air in Total Football from 7pm and contains interviews with Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal fans who were there on the night, plus Liverpool's legendary secretary Peter Robinson, George Sephton (his third game behind the mic in his first season) and Arsenal's Bob Wilson and United's Alan Gowling - who played in the game. I don't ever remember this, interesting though
neither did I mate, but it seems to be true http://www.aboutmanutd.com/man-u-matches/20-08-1971-arsenal.html
Was an excellent article in the Guardian last year on it. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2010/mar/17/manchester-united-home-anfield-1971
That was a very interesting documentary. Thanks for posting about this Charles as I would have missed it otherwise. I did not know about this story. I think there might have been some other matches played at neutral venues after the second world war involving bomb damaged stadiums.
