Playstation 3 started acting up few weeks ago. Has trouble reading discs and if I eventually get it going it can freeze mid game. Brought it into a console repair place in Abbey St. on Friday and they phoned me to tell me it was a problem with the laser (which I suspected). Anyway, they said they can fix it but it’ll cost €125 and take up to 15 days to complete. I thought that was very steep and just said no thanks. To me €125 is too much to spend repairing a 2.5 year old PS3 when a brand new one could be bought for approx €250 and I’ll have the benefit of the 12 or 24 month warranty (not sure what the official warranty is) Has anybody else ever had this problem with their PS3, if so how did you get it fixed and what kind of money did it cost ye? Any advice welcome as I try to make up my mind what to do….
I brought mine to Xtravision and they gave me a refurbished one for €160... that was over a year ago and its still working ok. The main reason why I did this was they upgraded my hard drive... but I dont think this is normal practice. I heard there is some place called Console Repair Ireland (or something) that will fix a console for less than €100.
Had a similar issue with my ps3.It was the bulky type that was released first. The same prob wouldn't read discs. They quoted 150 euro so I just bought a new one for 100 euro more and as op said got a fresh warranty.
Trade it on off a new one mate.I know Gamestop where doing Deals. If your winning to spend over €100 euro, id go that little bit extra and get yourself a new one. Also you dont know who long this repair job will sort the problem out for.Maybe in another year or so you could find yourself in this position again.
That sounds interesting Ron. Do you know how it works with Gamestop. Will they take in an old PS3 knowing it is in need of repair and sell me a brand new one at a discount? Or is the one they give out a re-conditioned one? I'll have a look on their site now but just wondering if you know off hand?
Id imagine it has to be in working order, But ive traded in stuff which doesnt work and they haven't even checked. The worst thing they can say to you is No. And you can Pretend you didnt know. I was in HMV today and they take trade in's too. They were also giving me better store credit than Gamestop or Game too, so Look into that. Smyths is another one along with Xtravision.Shop around mate, as they will only be too willing to cut you a deal in these Hard times.
Sorry to bump this thread again but was thinking about this again last night and I have a question. * If you download a game directly from the Playstation store, say for instance, Tiger Woods, do you have the full functionality and can you play online using the downloaded version? * As I mentioned the laser on my PS3 is banjoed. Got quoted 125 quid to have it fixed but that only comes with a 30 day warranty so in my mind it's not worth it. I've been looking around to see what kind of deal are out there cheapest is about €235 for a new PS3.* * If i could just download the new Pro Evo and Tiger to the hard drive of the PS3 and never use the laser again to play actual discs*then it wouldn't bother me. * Anybody with any experience of downloading rather than buying games and playing online? * Thanks.
There is no difference between buying the game in a shop or downloading via psn. They are completely the same game but you obviously can't trade in the download which would be the only disadvantage. However I would maybe buy a cheap game and test playing it online to check if the ps3 functions properly as you said it might be banjaxed.
Cheers Maverick. That could be a decent compromise, could save me a few hundred quid aswell. Will have to give it a bash so and see how it goes.
Cheers Aido – I have very little else saved on the hard drive so will hopefully be ok. Need to check though. When I looked in the PS3 Store last night it is €70 to download Tiger Woods 12 I bought the disc in HMV 2 months ago for €30. I hope the PS3 isn’t a rip off or I’m back to square one!
I have the same problem. I am planning on opening it up and trying to manually fix it on Monday or Tuesday. I'll let u know how I get on
