Do you think Ireland should have a president? If yes, which candidate, if any, would get your vote? Personally, I think we should have a president. It is a symbol of our sovereignty and a result of many years of Irish men and women fighting and sacrificing for our freedom. Without a president, in recent times, our highest ranking official wouldve been Bertie Ahern... Brian Cowen...Enda Kenny. To me that would be embarrasing. I feel a sense of pride when Mary McAleese welcomes foreign dignitaries to this country. I think the amount of money spent on the presidency should be slashed. They earn far too much...but to get rid of it just because of a recession is ridiculous. We would be laughed at even more by other countries for not being able to afford a president. Im not sure if i will vote for any candidates...i am undecided....but i would never seek the presidency to be abolished.
Does anyone know how the actual voting system works for this election? Is it a straight '1 man, 1 vote' or is there preferences also, like 'VOTE 1...VOTE 2...VOTE 3'?
If Martin gets the Aras I will be up there quick as a flash with a Rovers hat"n scarf . If he is gonna be in the big smoke a lot we may as well nab his support .
Im always amazed at David Norris's popularity when these things are carried out. Maybe my views of what's acceptable is different to others. But I definitely don't find his views on adults having sex with minors acceptable.I went for I think we should have a president but I wouldn't be inclined to vote for any of those candidates.
Nearly all the political commentators are saying dana +david norris wont even make it on to the ballot paper. They have until next thursday to gather the required nominations. But theres something wrong with the system.. if norris wont even make the the ballot paper..considering he has a lot of public support.
