Oliver Holt has been talking about this for the last couple of days on twitter. It's a rule they use in American football that says at least one minority candidate has to be interviewed for any head coach job that comes up. He reckons it should be introduced into English football and I was wondering what people on here thought about it.
If you are right for the job you are right for the job. Race or nationality should NOT come into it. If all the best managers/candidates are white then tough other minorities shouldn't be interviewed if they don't meet the requirements. Why should minorities be given preferential treatment?
What Elvis said Whoever is experienced and qualified gets the job, end off, couldn't care less what minority they are
Interesting issue. The rationale part of me dictates that I'm sure clubs would ignore ethnicity when appointing a manager, for fiscal reasons alone surely they want the best man. But 2 out of 96? The numbers just don't add up
Numbers don't have to add up, where I work, there's 1 person out of 100 under 25,. That's me. So what does that say?
I know fcuk all about American football but they were talking about black managers in the sport and how discrimination still exists.can't remember the exact figure but they said something like 11 of the last 15 superbowl winners have had a black manager involved..
They kinda do though, most of todays premier league managers are products of the 70's or 80's when 99% of footballers where white, in 10/15 years if the numbers are still the same then maybe it could considered an issue. Of the top black players of the 80's and 90's both Barnes and Ince got decent enough jobs but they bombed, no different to Ronnie Whelan or Bryan Robson who became nobodies after failing in the early days. Colour wasn't an issue in any of the 4 cases there.
In practical terms what does it even achieve? If a club is discriminatory then it amounts to a day out in a suit for a person from a minority. If they are not then the person will be interviewed anyway.
This sums it up for me. Another statement I've read today says positive discrimination is still discrimination which I also agree with. I think it would be degrading for a manager to know he's only being interviewed because of the colour of his skin. Personally I don't think it's an issue for football clubs in England and bringing in this rule would suggest there is and be a step backwards in the fight against racism.
I agree with everything said here Bobby. Going forward though I dont see the like of Cole, Ferdinand or Campbell in the dugout barking orders. It will more than likely be players from the next bracket down. I think Ince failed as a manager because he himself has an attitude problem nothing to do with the colour of his skin.
There is not a lot of minority managers in english football. And judging by the constant Managerial merry-go round operates..wouldnt you have the same few minority managers having to be interviewed by clubs with each vacancy? While knowing that most of the time its purely a cosmetic exercise..rather than on merit. It would be intresting to find out how many managerial vacancies there were, in the football league last season. It could work if there was a lot more minority coaches though.
