Very Sad...RIP.

Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell has died after collapsing during his team’s match against Dundee United, club chairman Bill Dickie confirmed.

O’Donnell, who was 35, was taken off the pitch at Fir Park on a stretcher in the closing stages of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match.

He was set to be replaced by substitute Marc Fitzpatrick in a match Motherwell won 5-3, but fell to the pitch as the change was taking place.

After been treated for around five minutes on the field, O’Donnell was carried off on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

Chairman Dickie said: "Unfortunately I can confirm very, very sad news that Phil O'Donnell has lost his life.

“We don’t know what it was but there will be a post-mortem.

“This is a tragic happening and that’s all I can say.”

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee said: “I don’t want to say anything more than how devastated everyone at the club is for his wife and his young children.

“That’s what we are all feeling tonight, nothing else matters.

“Obviously from the club’s point of view we’ll gather round to give his family as much support as they need.”

O’Donnell’s nephew, David Clarkson, was also playing in the match, and was taken off after being alarmed by the incident.

O’Donnell, who won one Scotland cap, began his career with Motherwell and rejoined the club in 2004 following spells with Celtic, who he joined in a £1.75m deal in 1994, and Sheffield Wednesday.

Didnt realise that he was still playin.
Was a decent player in the days that Celtic were crap, and strangely (or maybe not) they were more likeable in them days too.

Horrible news, RIP.

Anyone catch that program on TG4 a while back on professional footballers dropping dead while playing? They were linking it to the painkillers the players are getting given when injured and the how freely they're available to them. O'Donnell was often injured, it may well be something they should look into.

I agree with Pam, it's shocking how common this is becoming lately...all seem to be connected with heart problems in some way. Questions must be asked now to come to the root of the problem. There must be something that is triggering this, whether it is strain or excessive pressure on a certain area it is clear that enough is not done...

Main stand tribute to O'Donnell

The main stand will be renamed after the former Well captain
Motherwell have renamed their main stand after former captain Phil O'Donnell, who died last month.

O'Donnell, 35, collapsed and died of heart failure during a match against Dundee United on 29 December.

Well owner John Boyle said everyone at the club wanted a lasting tribute to O'Donnell and revealed that the stand would be renamed for next season.

O'Donnell's father, Bernard, said: "The family regard the naming of the stand after him as a great honour."

Boyle said the club were keen to recognise the outstanding contribution O'Donnell had made to the Fir Park club.

"We consulted members of Phil's family who have indicated their support and appreciation of this tribute," said Boyle.

Bernard O'Donnell said: "We have all been deeply touched by the reaction to Phil's death and Eileen and the rest of the family will always be grateful for the kindness that has been shown.

"The family regards the naming of the stand after him as a great honour and we will always appreciate this in the years to come."

Martin Rose, chairman of the Motherwell Supporters' Trust added: "On behalf of the Motherwell fans I would like to say we are fully behind this decision."

Motherwell postponed two of their games following O'Donnell's death as a mark of respect.

Well face Hearts in the Scottish Cup fourth-round tie at Tynecastle on Saturday and the Motherwell players will wear strips with O'Donnell's autograph embroidered on the front.

The players asked for the signature to be woven into their shirts as a tribute to their former skipper.

Club kit-man Alan McDonald said: "It will be exclusive to the first-team kits as it's the team's own tribute.

"It's something small but sometimes it's the small things that make all the difference.

"It's on the home and away kits as well as the coach's gear and we'll wear it proudly for the rest of the season."
