Buying an iphone over here in Canada on friday. 3 year contract seems to be the norm over here, well one I can afford also. I will be buying the phone in cash ($159) and then be paying my bill monthly in store or at various pay points throughout the city. I only need to show two forms of ID to purchase it. I'll show them my Canadian Bank Card and my BCID card I got over here. They are happy with that when I called in yesterday to the store.

Now I plan to honor my contract for the first year and pay my bills etc but when I leave to go back to Ireland in 12 months I don't want to pay any fee's for breaking my contract. I'm presuming once I leave there is nothing they can do? I wont ever be at that Canadian address again and my Canadian bank account will be closed so I should be fine, right?

Also will I have an option to do something dodgy like unlock it and use it back home? Is that possible or will the phone be redundant when I return home? My only other option is buying the phone outright but that's about 600 dollars.

Can anyone share some light on this situation? Please and thank you.

Surely when you see out a year you should be fine. There would be no problem unlocking either as its done quite often.

Well i'm entering a 3 yr contract so they'll be looking for an ECF (Early Cancellation Fee) when I stop paying at the end of one year that if I tell them. My other option is to say nothing and leave the country, I wont be at that address again, they dont have my credit card details. I might lose the phone as they will block it, but im wondering can i unlock it and use it over here or will they bar it? Heard they might bar it for US and Canadian use is all.

Your only worry about getting it unlocked is if the phone company block it using the imei number other than that you should have no prob getting it unlocked

@ Elvis, yeah you think. I should prob unlock it before I leave anyway yeah? Expect a thread in 11 months time. ha.

Thanks for the replies lads, should I go ahead with is so. It's not like they can chase me to Ireland looking for a cancellation fee or anything??

That will only block it in America and Canada,. When phones from England & Ireland get stolen they get sold to Saudi Arabia, Australia and Africa, different countries have a different blacklist network.

That's the only problem lad, you will be proper f**ked trying to get electricity, TV, gas etc. etc. if you ever want to come back here. Personally speaking I would do it in a second, f**k 'em, as long as you don't try to do the same with a Canadian credit card you'll be grand.

Just make sure its a GSM phone and not a CDMA! ;)

We don't have a CDMA network over here so if it was it would be useless

They want my BCID and SIN card as proof of identity. I take it, it will be okay to give them my SIN card?

It's 70 dollars a month for the bill. Thats the cheapest bundle really.

Your SIN is important for residents because its linked to your credit rating, but for us lowly non-resident it doesn't mean sh*te, and yours will always raise the alarm with anything you want to credit because it begins with a '9'. I'm surprised that they aren't looking for a deposit off you to be honest lad, Bell looked for one off me, but gave it back after the 12 months.

You must have an honest face, or being an expert bullsh*tter!

If you can stump up a bit more for one with free international texts go for it, it killed me for the first while, an extra 30 or 40 quid a month. Don't forget the whores charge you for incoming & outgoing texts, so even just a few from home a month add up.

Don't know who you are going with but Wind mobile have a monthly rate of 45 per month that includes unlimited international texts (might not be available in your area though)

God maybe they'll change their minds when they see it starts with 9.
Was going to go with Fido. 60 dollars a month gives me unlimited calls within canada, unlimited canadian and international texts. All incoming is free. 500mb of data. Its an extra ten dollars to have caller id and voicemails (FFS).

Didn't see much better. The international texts aren't that important to me but will be handy. I can go on to meteor and use webtexts for back home.

I see from your location, your in Calgary? What you think of it? In vancouver at the mo. What you doing to watch the matches? We dont have Setanta? Trying to find a VPN so I can access Sky Player and will sign up to liveonlinefooty before the weekend.
