Bit of a rascal isn't he :) He had the potential to be a fairly decent footballer, but its been well and truly tarnished by events on and off the pitch.

This might sound like a stupid question, but what the hell was he doing on a night out in Liverpool last night? Is he suspended this weekend does anyone know?

Update: Barton Charged With Assault

Following the news last night that Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton was being held in police custody in connection with an allegation of assault in his home city of Liverpool, it is now confirmed that Barton, 25, has been formally charged with assault.

zoom - galleria Joey Barton was arrested along with Andrew Barton, 19, and 27-year-old Nadine Wilson, on Church Street in Liverpool city centre at 05:30 on Thursday morning, following an allegation of assault.

Joey Barton and Ms Wilson are charged with common assault and affray. Andrew Barton is charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Ms Wilson, of Huyton, and Andrew Barton, from Widnes, have both been bailed. But Joey Barton remains in custody.

All three are due to appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court today (Friday).

Barton was not involved in Newcastle's game against Wigan on Boxing Day because of an ankle injury, and he is believed to have travelled to Liverpool to enjoy a night out in the city.

Early Friday editions of the Daily Mail reported that a complaint was made by two men who said they had been attacked by Barton and his companions.

The England international, brought up in the Huyton district of Liverpool, signed for Newcastle from Manchester City during the summer in a £5.8 million deal.

This is the latest controversy to dog his career, which has already been blighted by accusations of violence and disciplinary problems.

Recently, Barton was quoted in the media as saying there was a vicious streak among Newcastle fans, who had jeered the team and manager Sam Allardyce for delivering disappointing performances and results.

very surprised he didn't make bail...In Ireland you could murder someone on the monday and 9/10 you would be out on bail...it must have been a serious assault...i don't know how the categorise assault in England, but i wonder what the max penalty is for common assault...

Maybe we'll get him on the cheap now :) only kiddin' any manager would be mad to take him.

If he does get another opportunity he really needs to grow up.. he'll not be happy until he's behind bars. He really needs to wake up and realise how lucky he is.

He'll end up in the championship if they do cancel his contract. He is an easy target for people who want cheap press now.

Apparently they are all cases of self defence, people on the street keep attacking his foot with their heads and stomachs for no reason.

He just stands there and they repeatedly hit his foot and when his brother tries to pull them away from Barton the individual then attacks both there feet at the same time.
