Anybody ever connect their laptop to the tv, have a laptop with only a VGA connector, one TV is older and only has a scart connection but presume the newer tv has a VGA connector.

    Is it difficult to do?

There should be sound. It is probably the encoding on the video file for the audio. Try running one film or episode through any file converter, and have the output set to avi, and the sound encoding to mp3, and try that again.

If that does not work its down to your laptop. You'll have to check but it could be a couple of reasons:

Your laptop doesn't output sound via HDMI - only video. Not uncommon.

Your laptop has to be set to pump sound out via HDMI.

I use what I think is called an RGB cable. But when I bought that the guy told me to buy another sound cable(a jack??) and with those two I have no hassle.

Tried this for the first time last season using HDMI cable, some good sites but need broadband as it it live streaming, anyone know of a site that games are recorded onto a server and so when you pause (kind of like with a movie) the match down loads in the background, I could leave it a half hour and then watch as I have a slow connection for now. Any advise would be great . . .

Does anyone know if there's a (cheaper) device out there that ye can connect up to the tv and will work wirelessly like a ps3 to allow you to surf the net through the tv?
Basically all I'd be using it for is to watch live sport on tv through the internet.

Close the laptop. There may also be a "function" fn button for it. also try right clicking and go to properties, then display, and then second screen., Should be some options in there.

There is a FN button but i don't even know its use.

I was able to right click into properties and get into a display screen where both screens showed up and i could alter the resolutions bit still didn't display on tv. I'll keep trying. Thanks

Try pressing the Windows key and P

The fn button, when pressed along with another key, which contains blue secondary writing on it, will do an alternate function, some laptops have a little picture of a square/screen or will say crt/lcd etc. This may switch it so your tv picks up the feed.

Failing that, you will need to reconnect the wire, reboot the laptop, and go to your video settings and the advanced tab and to graphics card, and then output, and make sure it is enabled.

Yep you'll need a Componet cable, Red.Yellow connection from your headphone jack to tv. Or use a pair or speakers from your laptop.
