Sorry if there is a thread already for this, had a quick look there and didn't see one. Anyway I'm off to Cavan tomorrow for a bit of fishing and was just wondering if there was any other members into fishing as well, whether it be river or sea fishing. Where do you fish and so on? What's your prized catch and any exotic place you may have fished. Thanks.
Took Wednesday afternoon off work to go fishing, caught 3 beautiful brown trout. Mainly trout and course fishing. Fished a lot more when I was younger but getting back into it now.
I tried to get into it last year.I bought a beach caster as where i live there is beaches every 5 minutes from me, about 8 or so i reckon and there seems to be abit of decent fishing down here. Had all the Gear and Bought Books and stuff, But never really knew what i was at so Packed it in.Bit of a shame as on lovely days id love to be out.
Nah Mate, dont deal in drugs. Been serious no i doubt as ill be holding on to it, in the hope that some day some one will show me how to fish correctly.
I loved fishing most of me life but havent really been doing much over the last 3 years. Cavan is the perfect spot Keith. We rented log-cabins on a lake years back and spent 4 days there. Just brilliant craic. The pike fishing there is serious quality. And you'll get some good bream/roach/tench there if thats your niche. I fully intend to get into the sea-fishing after I finally make the move to Dun Laoghaire permanent. (in between there and rathfarnham at the mo still) But coarse fishing was always my favourite. Bream and tench. Biggest individual catch was about 13 pound, in the shannon in athlone. A pike offf a spinner. Great buzz but I'd prefer coarse fishing. Coarse fishing we often had a good 60 pound hawl between 2 of us in a day (5am til 11pm). Made up from bream, tench, roach, eels, perch. I know most lads prefer going for a big pike or a big salmon/trout. But coarse fishing is class fun. Ground-baiting yer swim and waiting for the float to sink. Caught many a 6 pound bream and tench that way and i prefer that to catching a pike twice the size. Its more fun. If you do any coarse fishing then you could do worse than check out the canal in Kildare off the Kilmore bridge. I dont know how its fishing these days but we used to get some serious hawls there. Also, if you check out "Fureys pub" in Moyvalley. Drive down past the pub along the canal for about 2 miles and pick yer spot. Nobody to bother you and its always been good to us. Good luck in Cavan.
Had a few mackerel on wednesday..while fishing off the rocks near Dunmore East.I had no feathers..so was using a kilty lure..those mackerel will eat anything anyway.Im not that good at it,but i really enjoy it for recreational purposes..and solitude. Will go again tomorrow for a few hours...and they have nice pubs in Dunmore to drown my sorrows.. if i dont catch anything
Yeah Cavan is a great spot for the fishing. We go down a good bit because my mate has a boat down in Belturbet. Last time I was down I was fishing for about an hour only and caught 5 perch with a spinner. One of them was a cracker the rest were pretty small in fairness. Gonna be doing a bit more fishing this time both spinning and coarse. Will report back with my success or lack of it.
Normally go off the rocks in Howth or off the pier in Dun Loaighire for Mackerel. I haven't been out this year yet but hope to get out there in the next week or so. The lads were talking about renting a boat out in Howth and going out for a few hours it's supposed to be very good with plenty getting caught.
Would you ever get some gimp asking for a license there? And with sea-fishing do you just chuck in the lure and reel back in slowly? Or how does it work?
No never got asked for a license didn't know you needed one. The only fishing license I have is for my local river. It depends we normally go out with feathers and cast in as far as you can and reel back in jigging it. Sometimes we bring a bit of rag worm with us and just put 3 or 4 hooks on with a weight with all the hooks with rag worm on them and cast them out and wait. Much prefer the feathers though.
If you were starting out for the first time, what are all the essentials ? Can you fish anywhere, How do you throw the fish back in without killing it ? Is there beginner rods ? do the worms have to be alive ?
Im after getting bck into the fishing tis year as i was shit at golf i was down in greystones last week caught fck all a few bites thats it two poxy seals hanging around so that fcked us up!
Fishing in a small river at home in Louth. Full of trout but the big ones are hard to come by. I was spinning Wednesday but also have caught them with worms, minnows and fly fishing. We had two great little ponds beside us as kids, full of rudd and roach and pike. Two of us caught 51 rudd and roach one morning, nothing better than a nice summers day with a float in the water. Unfortunately both ponds are now ruined Only a short distance to the lakes of monaghan and cavan so did a lot of pike fishing as a kid, biggest probably about 5kgs. My one and only salmon would be my prized catch
It depends on what type of fishing you want to do. Some rivers and lakes are stocked by clubs and usually you need a licence to fish them. It's better to have the worms alive alright I wouldn't use dead ones myself. You can get rods in Lidl and Aldi from time to time and they are perfect for starting off and they are very well priced.
Only been fishing a couple of times this year caught some mackerel and a few pollock, Tried a bit of Bass fishing last week and only got weed!!
havent fished in years but theres 10 of us from work going out on a charter from howth now in august for a days sea fishing should be good craic.
