Just a nice gesture i heard he done lately! My bosses cousin is a youth player at forrest and recently lost his mother and was finding things very hard to deal with especiaaly as he is away from home and had no familly to support him, When he came into training one morning there was a delivery there for him from shay given (who he had never mett) and inside was a signed jersey and a pair of gloves and a letter saying he had heard from the ireland management what had happened and he went through his experience of loosing his mother when he was so young and how he dealt with it, he also gave the lad great hope for the future and told him he reckons he is the one who will take the ireland number one jersey from him the only thing he asked of the lad in return was that when he makes it to the top that he sends shay a signed pair of gloves so he can tell his kids they know each other ! We normally only hear the bad things they do but fair play to you shay given !
Great gesture from a real gentleman. Had the pleasure of chatting with Shay at the airport a few years ago, a real down to earth guy with plenty of time for the "common man".
Given a doubt for Macedonia game Mods - maybe you can move this into International Section. Didn't want to start another thread. Great story above by the way, quality by Given! He would an absolutely massive loss for the Macedonia game http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2011/0220/givens_mancity_ireland.html Shay Given will discover this week if he needs to undergo surgery after the Manchester City goalkeeper suffered a shoulder injury. Given, who has played second fiddle to Joe Hart all season, was not on the bench for Sunday afternoon's 5-0 FA Cup victory over Notts County. 'He has a shoulder problem and next week he will go to the doctor in London to see if he needs surgery,' City manager Roberto Mancini said. Given, 34, has made only four appearances for City this season and could now be doubtful for the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2012 Group B qualifier against Macedonia on 26 March.
An absolute shame to see a world class keeper such as Shay wasting away on city's bench!! Should be between the posts for a top side, wouldnt be surprised to see the Scum or the Gooners in for him this summer.........just unfortunate that City would rather let him rot on the bench than sell to a rival!
Shay been out for the Macedonia game is a big loss...great keeper.. Shame to see stuck on the City bench, he will surely move on next season..Arsenal id say...
Cn also see him move to a team like Arsenal, would be perfect for them, anyone else of the opinion that if players, mybe specifically keepers, are more prone to injuries such as this if not playing on a regular basis?
Thats a great story, cheers for posting Gerry. This is my first time seeing it. I've heard other stories about Given that are class also, proper gent, need more people like him in the game.
Nice touch for him. His injury will give Westwood a chance. I think Arsenal would be the perfect chance for him to redeem his career but i think the Arsenal boat could have passed.
Great gesture from Shay. All to often footballers are criticized for their class or lack of it.Shay Given is an exception to the rule.Hope he gets his move during the Summer.
Fair play Shay ... always comes across as a decent bloke. hope he gets a good turn in return for the likes of this gesture, an exit from his existing club to one where he can play first team football again might be in order.
That is a gesture that just radiates class. What a man Shay, very well done. Could do with more of you around the place!
