Jaysus, there's some people on here that probably weren't even born when that happened. The one thing I remember about after the game was the excitement in the build up to the Italy game the following Saturday. There's bound to be someone off here who was at the game.
What a day, it was the day before my 10th bday and my mam gave me the white jersey, i remember when it went to pens i said we would win it as bonner played a blinder denied hagi about 12 times during the game. balled my eyes out and the best street party ive ever seen broke out
Downed tools in the middle of the day, it was the one time when you could walk out of work and no one said anything, sub of the boss on the way out the door, I think I owed a months wages after that Head to the Lisheen bar on bridge st, tiny bar tiny tv but the atmosphere was amazing, place erupted, my uncle nearly pulled the tv off the wall Doing the congo on the tiny bar, falling out of that pub and getting into one of those tourist horse and cart jobs up the town. Cars abandoned in the middle of the road, student gaurds joining in with the celebrations People singing in the fountain in Eyre Sq with the water turned green, lads hanging out of hotel windows Into the pub where my Uncle sang a tom jones song with the band and yours truly, who hasnt a note in her head sang american pie to a pub jammed with people who joined in. Thank god there were no camera phones Would love to do it all over again, tried to explain to my lad what it was like, in the end just said-"ya had to be there"
Seriously now come on be honest, Who said 'David O' Leary!!' When he stepped up for that final peno, Jack Charlton did
Thanks Sarge for starting this thread. It's bringing back so many wonderful memories.I still can't believe it's 21 years ago. I was only 14 at the time.I remember the street parties and everyone up dancing on the car bonnets and waving their tri-colors.Their was a sense of pride in the nation I don't think we have come close to achieving since.Even the victory over Italy 4 years later didn't match the euphoria of that night.World Cup 2002 certainly didn't come close but not knocking either achievement all the same. It annoys me to hear people say that the standard of football we played under Jack was dire.OK it wasn't the most pretty to watch but there is no way we could have taken on the big boys of World football playing attractive football. They would have wiped the floor with us.It's a shame that we won't ever experience days like that again.
I remember Hagi peppering Bonner and us not having a chance. Was 10 at the time and Had community games trials that evening. Came first in 100 metres. The buzz around the country was unbelievable.
I was 4 ha ha remember gettin soaked with drink the whole family wer in de gaf antis uncles cusins de lot never forget it , also remember the next morning de carpet had to be takin up it soaked so muck beer ha ha good times
Will we ever see the like of that summer. Two of my uncles told me recently they were mid 20s, stone broke and got 3k loan out of credit union to head for Italy. Said there will never be a time like it again, best money they ever spent. The innocence of it all, lads Had barely been out of Ireland. getting Western union transfers and sleeping rough for days, just living for the Craic and the next game.
I was watching it on the telly with my folks. The mother couldnt bare to watch the peno's and went into the kitchen as the shoot-out was about to start. She later confessed to us that she was fookin praying in the kitchen. Remember me auld man giving me this huge hug when the decisive peno hit the net. I was only 10 at the time, but pretty vivid memories of that whole tournament. Good memories.
I was 19 and it was the single most exciting day of my life up to that point. I was in the Noggin Inn in Sallynoggin with all my close mates and we had a few! Great memories, great times. Yeah i still have one somewhere. Brilliant! I for one roared fcuk off when i saw O Leary step up. In actual fact I couldnt watch and didnt actually get to see his peno till a few days later. The celebrations were amazing. Thanks for the memories.
