So, would you be in favour of it? PREMIER LEAGUE PONDERED CL PLAY-OFF Richard Scudamore has revealed Premier League chiefs considered the idea of introducing a play-off for the competition's fourth and final Champions League berth. The plan would have involved the teams finishing fourth through to seventh in the Barclays Premier League vying for the right to enter the qualifying rounds of Europe's elite club competition. This season, that would have resulted in fourth-placed Arsenal facing Everton, who came seventh, and Tottenham (fifth) playing Liverpool (sixth), with the winners of those matches advancing to the play-off final. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, a number of top-flight clubs were in favour of the idea, although Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are thought to have voiced opposition. Premier League chief executive Scudamore said: "We had a look at it. There was some interest but ultimately it was felt to stick with [the current system]."
I wouldnt, first off its just an excuse for the FA to make more money but if you finish fourth on merit over the 38 games you deserve your spot. Everton finished 14 points behind Arsenal but 2 good games and Everton get in the CL how is that fair? There is far too much money at stake.
Agreed, the gimps at the top are constantly trying to come up with new gimmicks to make more money. I can see it happening though.
Frank, This was already posted this morning. Take a look at a few posts in this thread. http://www.irishkop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17519&page=17 Read from post 328
Not in favour of it at all , just out of interest does anyone know how much teams get for reaching qf of both cl and el , i'd be interested in seeing how much difference there is
I dunno in the last 2 seasons we would of been over the moon with a playoff for the champions league. Next season I expect a top 4 finish but there are now 5 teams and you could nearly include Spurs in that aswell, its not the big 4 anymore.
Here is last year's prize moneys for the two tournaments. Different countries teams benefit in different ways. For example English teams receive more proportionately than other counties clubs because the UK TV deals are the most valuable. http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/competitions/General/01/51/72/68/1517268_DOWNLOAD.pdf http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/competitions/General/01/51/72/70/1517270_DOWNLOAD.pdf
Wouldnt be in favour of it at all but not suprised that it has been mentioned as it generates more money etc.
No harm to give it a fresh thread so we can all again conclude how ludicrous an idea this is. The only way that I can see this is as a runner is if the PL had only 18 teams in the league. Try getting Premiership chairmen voting for less clubs in the league?
I can see it being a mess for example if we have no chance of top 3 but are sure things to finish between 4 and 7 with 6 or 7 games left and we where going fir say the fa cup or even champions league semis or something we would end up resting people with 7 games to go happy to finish anywhere between. 4 and 7 the standard of the prem would go down imo
I think it's a silly money making idea, too much messing with teams resting players as no one would care if they finish 4th-7th.
The Greek League (any others?) operate this system but they are just a 16 team league with just 2 automatic CL spots. 2nd place to 5th place play off for the 2nd CL spot.
They tried it in Holland for a while few years back and scrapped it, I think the reason was it was effecting their co-efficient.
