Wes Hoolahan has missed out on a recall to the Republic of Ireland squad despite helping Norwich earn promotion to the Premier League this week. The midfielder was not among the 33 names on a provisional list announced by coach Giovanni Trapattoni today for the side's three summer fixtures. The Republic take on Northern Ireland and Scotland on 24 and 29 May in the Carling Nations Cup before travelling to Macedonia for a Euro 2012 qualifier on 4 June. Provisional Republic of Ireland squad for Carling Nations Cup matches against Northern Ireland (24 May) and Scotland (29 May) and Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia (4 June): Given (Man City), Westwood (Coventry), Forde (Millwall); Dunne (Aston Villa), O'Shea (Man Utd), Foley (Wolves), Delaney (Ipswich), Clark (Aston Villa), Coleman (Everton), Kilbane (Huddersfield), Kelly (Fulham), McShane (Hull); McCarthy (Wigan), Whelan (Stoke), Wilson (Stoke), Gibson (Man Utd), McGeady (Spartak Moscow), Fahey (Birmingham), Lawrence (Portsmouth), Treacy (Preston), Hunt (Wolves), Ward (Wolves); Keogh (Wolves), Stokes (Celtic) Folan (Colorado Rapids), Walters (Stoke), Keane (West Ham), Long (Reading). I like Trap but I can understand why he gets criticism, can't understand why Treacy and Folan are in ahead of Hoolahan.
Trap is a bad manager imo, he clearly cant get the best out of his players, i started a thead about this very thing ages ago, he's not picking the right players, not playing them where they should be playing, i doubt he even knows where some of them play. Wes Hoolahan has been outstanding in the Championship all season, and yet i bet Trap would still pick even Paul Green ahead of him. SHAMFUL to say the least
I think he moved from Scotland to England too soon unfortuntely. He was getting Game time in scotland along with scoring goals up there, But since he has moved to Wigan he has not started too many games, which has lead to him not scoring either. So i cant see him been called up to the Squad until at least next season, if he makes the Wigan team. If they go down, Id imagine he will become Number striker there, which will also factor into him getting a call up, but for Now i cant see it Happening. Regarding Wes, I think he is at that age now where he has to be breaking into the squad, as he is 28 so he wont have much longer left i think. I cant see him even fitting into the Ireland Set up, as he plays just behind the striker at Norwich, where as we play a standard 4-4-2 which means that position isnt available in the Ireland Set up. Its disappointing as he has done well at Norwich over the past couple of seasons, along with his time at Blackpool too. But i cant see him been called up either.
Being honest mate I don't think the reason Trap hasn't called him up is because he won't fit the system, I genuinely believe Trap knows little about Hoolahan or Sammon. Caleb Folan not playing for Ireland for almost 17 months and then getting a call up while playing for the Colarado Rapids says it all! Trap sticks with the core group he knows, that's why Kilbane, Green still get the nod and why the likes of Paddy Kenny hasn't got a look in despite being outstanding all season for QPR. Thank god Given will be back shortly. Trap only cares about Irish football right now and not the future, which unfortunately is a major flaw within the FAI. We should have a manager in there who wants results now but is also thinking about 2/3 years down the road and blooding at any chance possible.
First off i dont think Wes will be called up, as Trapp is not Stubborn to change his system for more attack minded players. Its sad really but that Debate is for another Thread. I agree with you about him sticking with Players he Knows. He plays it safe, which is aload of crap really, as whats the point in having friendly touraments and friendly games, if your not going to try different systems and also different players, who warrant a call up due to their form over the season. Players Like Wes Houllan And Sammon before he moved to Scotland deserved a call up to the Squad. Id love to see a young Hungry Irish Manager come in, Some one along the lines of Chris Hughton. We have a fantastic bunch of young Irish players coming Through. Westwood Seamus Coleman Ciaran Clarke Shane Duffy Kevin Foley James Mc Carthy Keith Kahey Aidan Mc Geady Anthony StokesShane Long Kevin Doyle Subs Conor Henderson Sammon Treacy Not a bad core of young players coming through.
Im sick to death over arguing about this man and this team, oh and by the way lads, ye're about 5 months late for this argument as well http://www.irishkop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16617 Albeit this thread is mostly about Hoolahan and Sammon, the thread above is mostly the same
Didnt he get the second against West ham on Sunday. Either way Hoolahan and probably sammon are both getting first team football now. I dont get this whole lark of people being suited for a particular position when they struggle to get first team football which was the case with one or two on team.
Team to Play Northen Ireland Tomorrow. Team: Shay Given; Paul McShane, Stephen Kelly, Damien Delaney, Marc Wilson; Seamus Coleman/Liam Lawrence, Keith Andrews, Keith Fahey/Kevin Foley, Keith Treacy; Robbie Keane, Simon Cox
Nice to see Simon Cox given a start. We should have enough to beat the North anyway whatever team we put out.
