I have got as far as using the computer now for basics like the internet, proud of meself, I've transformed a scrapheap into a useable object, and I'd consider myself a computer retard !!! :D

Need a small bit more help.

It is a Dell Computer, bout 4 years old, has basic XP on it. It does not seem to run any new programmes such as Windows Explorer 8, Football manager or even download an anti virus.

    Can anyone suggest:
    Reasons/solutions for the above?
A suitable Web browser (modern as this will accept)
Free antivirus (Won't let me download Avg or Avast)

    Ideas??

Can any computer experts give me a hand. When I turn on my laptop the screen stays black with the little yoke down the end scrolling across as if its about to load up. It wont go past this screen, I have to turn the power off and try again, sometimes three or four times before it will switch on ok. This does not happen all the time maybe once or twice a week.

It doesnt actually turn on. It's the screen straight after I press the on button. Just the black screen with the bar at the end of the screen as if its loading, it doesnt go past this page unless I press the off button and try another few times. Cheers mate.

    New problem.

I'm getting this screen when trying to access my Hotmail and can't get any further. I'm using Internet Explorer, Windows 7 and recently cleared cookies.

Does it beep when coming on at all? I'm just on lunch at the moment, so I'll be able to delve a little more into the issue when I'm back. And i should have your problem solved by this evening ;)

    @vodkacolly
Leave it with me and I'll see what I can do.
First off I wouldn't use Internet explorer, did you download the new version? Because I know that has issues with a lot of stuff at the moment, try chrome or firefox for starters, also has there been any major changes/installations prior to this happening?

Internet Explorer 8. I'll try a different browser. Did nothing major before... just cleared cookies, temp internet files.

EDIT: working ok with Chrome so I'll use that for the moment.

Yeah, I tried Chrome and Firefox before (in fairness, only for about half an hour:))but got annoyed with the changes (Toolbars etc) Couldn't find my way around so went back to Explorer.
    Thanks anyway.

Aido or Elvis some help on this please if you can...

Having a nightmare with Zxyel Router from Eircom , I have a few router/modems lying around the house from previous broadband suppliers.

One of the routers is a Netgear , it came with a dongle for the laptop , I couldn't ever install the dongle that came with it because the dell studio wireless card wouldn't install it for me, the card can't find the router either.

I want to bin this eircom router and use the Netgear one but I can't install it, Is there anyway to use the netgear without the dongle, i.e updating wireless card on dell studio ???

Does the router work when connected via ethernet cable? Also disable and re-enable the wireless. I would suggest updating your drivers also.
What version of the netgear is it?
I know there is a version that has issues with other wireless cards that are not manufactured by netgear I think its the RP614 router.

When I connect it by cable I just get an icon in the tray but I don't see the router on the network settings

    It's a Netgear DG834GT 108 MPS Super Wireless ADSL
How do I go and update the network card on the laptop. ??
Card is Dell Wireless Wlan driver version A00 Driver: 5.30.21.0
