    Skysports.com understands Liverpool have made an approach to sign Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing.

    The England international has impressed for Villa this season and has been an ever-present for the club in the Premier League.

    He is Villa's top scorer with five goals in the league and is understood to have been the subject of an enquiry from Sunderland last week.

    The 26-year-old is now being targeted by Liverpool as new manager Kenny Dalglish seeks to inject some fresh blood into his squad.

    Downing cost Villa £12million from Middlesbrough 18 months ago and he has made 64 appearances after injury delayed the start of his career in the Midlands.

    Villa boss Gerard Houllier revealed last month that he was confident that he would be able to retain the services of Downing during the January transfer window.

    However, Villa's pursuit of Sunderland striker Darren Bent could prompt the club to consider letting Downing move on.

    An offer of £18million is reported to have been made for Bent and cashing in on Downing would provide some of the funds to bring in his fellow England international.

    Would be nice to have a proper out and out winger. Even tho he was never flavour of the month, I think we have really missed the width that Riera gave us when he played

    I went to college in Middlesbrough and used to watch the reserves (only £1, bargain) and this skinny kid on the wing was always brilliant. As a 17 year old he ripped the place up, skill, pace and goals. He hasnt quite kicked on, but has a lot of talent. Wouldnt be the worst signing.

    He'd be decent for about 6million, any more and were wasting money, Id rather throw an extra couple of million on top, and try get Adam Johnson, Hazard, Marin, Lukaku, Albrighton, Griezman.

    As mentioned above he could give us the natural width on the left that we haven't had since Riera left. If we got him and sold babel for around the same price i'd be happy

    Yeah would be nice to have a natural winger at the club. Cole Maxi attacking midfielder's and Kuyt a forward so would make a change!

    I think he has been Villa's best player this season so I doubt they will want to sell him in January

    I can't wonder why all the hype is over Ashley Young he is overated and not a winger. If he was a winger why does he come inside so much.

    He's better than maxi and Bable IMO. If we can get him in for the same amount we get for bable it'll be a good move.
