Liverpool will attempt to land Ajax striker Luis Suarez this month as the club's new owners prepare to hand significant funds in the transfer window in the hope of igniting a push towards the top six.
Damien Comolli has earmarked a move for the Uruguayan international who is apparently keen on leaving the Eredivisie club following the departure of boss Martin Jol last month.
Roy Hodgson had been hoping to bring in some new attacking options and is linked with moves for a number of potential additions and will hope that a bid in the region of £18m will make Ajax consider selling their star striker. The Amsterdam club had been hoping to secure around £30m for the 23 year old but may accept less as they attempt to resolve massive debts they have accrued.
Suarez is currently serving a seven game suspension for biting an opponent and is reportedly very unhappy with life at Ajax and will hope to force an exit and a move to the Barclays Premier League apparently interests the former Groningen man.
Liverpool will be looking to bring in potential signings to take some of the goalscoring burden from Spaniard Fernando Torres and Hodgson and Director of Football Damien Comolli may well see Suarez as an ideal partner for the Anfield striker.
Tottenham and Arsenal are also said to be interested in the Ajax marksman who has netted a phenomenal 110 goals in three and a half seasons at the club.

IMO NESV have the cash and once a player fits their profile they will bid what they think is right even if's £30m+

He looks the part alright, quick feet and a good shot....i'd take the gamble, only thing is that he seems to be greedy with the ball and dont think he could play with Torres....might be one or the other
No doubting his credentials as a goalscorer, he has outgrown Ajax IMO at this stage, scoring rate is phenomenal, abeit in a poorer league, had a great World Cup mind.

I think our new owners will be keen to do their business quietly and then let the press know once the deal is done. At least thats the way the Red Sox have handled their bigger buys in recent seasons.
think this lad would be a quality addition but I cant see it happening, as another poster said why choose us at the moment if he can get CL with Spurs or Arsenal.:(

Is he not cup tied from the CL anyway? And theres no guarantee Spurs or Arsenal will have it next season or do well in it if there, where as Liverpool have aproven European pedigree, and once we get back in we wont be getting out of it easy, plus there is more competition for places at Arsenal and Spurs, so he would be better off choosing us for long term ambition, rather than 1 maybe 2 seasons of CL football max with Spurs, and not getting a game at Arsenal. Also signing him would show we mean business.
Anyway thats my take on it. :)

Saying that win our 2 games in hand and European football looks more promising again for next year
Would expect big bucks would be needed to pull Suarez in

Agree , but the lure of playing for us is still there but we need to get our act together before the lure starts to fade .
IMO Ajax will look for more than £18m , but IMO £15-18m is about right.

Another good player who would be a more exciting prospect than Zamora, Elmander, Cole and Dempsey. Doubt we have that sort of cash to throw about. I fear we will end up with nothing despite the promises made by the new owners when they took over. A lot of supporters really think we'll be splashing out but it is unlikely. There are plenty of players available and had we the cash we needed to move quickly to try and resurrect the season. The longer we go without any transfer action the less likely we will get that superstar we were all promised and we really need.

Course they have the cash, think they spent $500m on 2 players although I believe some of this was funded by player sales.
They just won't be reckless with the cash and pay over the odds just 'cos its Jan and clubs will try and hold us to ransom. Patience and faith required even though thats hard considering performaces and the past owners.
Edit- I would be walking round with a permanent stonker if we managed to get Suarez

That's unreal, that said its in the dutch league where Kuyt, Alves and Huntelaar used to have no problems scoring but I'd still expect a good few goals from him. The only real fear with him is the influence he may have in the dressing room, City are quickly showing that you can have the best players in the world but if there's a few too many egos in the dressing room its going to boil over and eventally affect them on the pitch. Just hope we don't go down that route.

At the moment but a team can't have that many fights and not have it affect them eventually. Ballotelli, Tevez, Adebayor and De Jong are all disruptive in some way because they believe their own hype or in De Jong's case will end somebody's career with some of the tackles he puts in. I can't see how it won't eventually backfire on them.

Meant the world cup incident. I watched BBC 3's most shocking world cup moments and this was in the top 3. In similar circumstances for the reds I'd want him to do time and time again.

To be honest mate, I think LFC now has a good story to tell, recently changed ownership and resolved historic problems, removed all bank debt out of the club, starting to rebuild for the future, owners are of good standing financially blah blah blah ... question is, would he be convinced by Roy ?
- as an aside, he appears a super player, but when I read posts referring to his goals-vs-games ratio, I always have to ask .... what league these were scored in, as that's a vital consideration :)

He cheated Ghana out of a World Cup semi final place. The punishment was correct but certainly not fair.
While I'm sure a lot of other players would have done the same thing, it was the way he celebrated the Ghana penalty miss that really sickened me.

Do you often read papers other then British / Irish ones?
Guess not, because then you would know that the young high potential players don't talk about Liverpool when they mention the PL - it's the Chavs, ManUre and Arse they wanna play for.
Your story is very nice, we all believe it and we all hope one day it will become the reality. But young "stars" wanna shine in the Champions League. And they wanna grab trophees in England, Italy or Spain. And they want huge wages while doing it. We cannot offer them title challenging football nor do we have the lucrative Champions League to offer. And the question remains what FSG's salary policy will be.
As for your remark on the league, I fully agree: it's not because you're a star in Holland, that you will make it in another league too. The peterprinciple. Every team 's got some examples of that in their squad.

And he got sent off, so it's not that he got away with it. It's hardly his fault that the other team missed that penalty.

HAMBURG - Ajax striker Luis Suarez has no plans to leave Amsterdam. "I will stay at Ajax, " said the Uruguayan after the exhibition game against Hamburger SV (4-2) against NUsport.
There are many stories written in the Netherlands. I have only one interview and it never said I want to leave. I just got a contract until 2013. There are many clubs mentioned but I know nothing. "
Captain
Suarez wants to concentrate on the second half of the season, despite interest from England. "I hope champ with this club."
The Uruguayan was partly for that reason no longer captain of Amsterdam. The band is now on the arm of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. "It was my own initiative. Everyone looks at me. It is better for me if not more so, "explains Suarez out.
Give everything
"Martin is a long time at the club, he can speak good Dutch. I have a very busy year behind the World Cup and the birth of my first child. I would now give anything for the team. "

Liverpool and Tottenham locked in battle for Luis Suarez as Ajax hope to force £19m bidding war
Liverpool and Tottenham are locked in a battle for Luis Suarez after both clubs approached Ajax over a January move, Goal.com UK can reveal.
The Uruguayan star is believed to favour a move to Spurs but Liverpool could yet trump their Premier League rivals as Ajax want £19 million for the striker now they have sparked a bidding war. They had initially made Suarez available for €20m (£16.8m) but due to cash problems are determined to get the best possible deal.
Goal.com UK understands the Dutch club have indicated they are ready to cash in on their prize asset in the January transfer window despite the player claiming over the weekend that he would be staying in Amsterdam.
Suarez is leaning towards Tottenham due to their more competitive league position and for personal reasons, as he would prefer to bring up his young daughter in London.
As Goal.com UK revealed on Saturday, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has identified the World Cup star as his number No.1 striker target after dropping his interest in Andy Carroll and chairman Daniel Levy is due to step up talks this week.
But Liverpool have also been tracking the 23-year-old for a number of months and director of football strategy Damien Comolli has also registered his interest with Ajax as he prepares to take on his former club for one of the hottest properties in Europe.
“Ajax have received approaches from both clubs, although nothing is imminent,” a source told Goal.com UK. “Suarez would prefer Tottenham at the moment because he is a family-orientated man with a very young child and he likes the idea of living in London.”
Tottenham, who are fourth in the Premier League, want Suarez to help them secure Champions League football for next season, but the club are first waiting to sell Robbie Keane, the Republic of Ireland captain who continues to reject a move to Birmingham. Redknapp is also known to have slight concerns over whether Suarez will be able to cut it in English football as he fears he is too weak and small to lead the line.
Liverpool are confident they can pip Spurs to Suarez due to the history of the club and they feel they can offer a more lucrative wage package. New manager Kenny Dalglish is believed to support a move for the player, who has scored 110 goals in 154 games for the Dutch giants and netted a stunning 49 times last season.
Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, may also be more inclined to meet Ajax's asking price as they look to make another statement of intent following the dismissal of Roy Hodgson and his replacement with Kop legend Dalglish.
The Reds are desperate to add a quality striker to the squad as both a partner and an alternative to Fernando Torres, who has been out of sorts all season. They believe Suarez, who can play either as an out-and-out striker or as a creative second forward, fits the bill.
Suarez joined Ajax from FC Groningen in 2007 for £6.2m but his relationship with the club hierarchy has deteriorated since the sacking of former Spurs manager Martin Jol, especially after they failed to appeal against his seven-match ban incurred by the Dutch Football Federation in late November for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal.
Comolli revealed on Monday that Liverpool – who have prioritised a striker, winger and full-back – have been working on a number of transfer deals but admitted the Merseysiders are not close to sealing any moves.
He said: “We have been working on it [a transfers list], but I don't know if there will be any activity because it is a very complicated market and we have to be very careful what we do.”Tottenham continue to try to complete a loan deal for David Beckham while their £2m January move for Everton's Steven Pienaar could also be under threat as reports emerged that Chelsea are interested in the South African midfielder.
Pienaar for £2-£6m would be a steal imo.

Luis Suarez, the £20million-rated Ajax striker, has paved the way for a move to Liverpool.
Anfield boss Kenny *Dalglish is meeting owner John W Henry over the weekend to finalise plans for the final fortnight of the transfer *window.
And the scene is set for the Uruguay international to *arrive as Ryan Babel heads out of Merseyside with clubs in England and Germany *pursuing him.
Suarez shares the same agent as Fernando Torres and has asked him to find out if clubs are interested in *signing him this month.
Liverpool and Tottenham lead the chase, but the *Spanish-speaking connection at *Anfield could prove a *critical attraction.
Suarez is the kind of busy, *skillful player who *creates openings for team-mates, which Torres will welcome, as well as scoring goals *himself.
He formed a formidable partnership at last summer’s World Cup with Diego Forlan that took Uruguay through to the semi-finals.
The striker is at Ajax’s winter training camp in Turkey. He has had a meeting with coach Frank de Boer and they accept the moment has arrived for the South *American to move on if the Amsterdam club get an acceptable offer.
De Boer explained: “I’ve had a showdown with Luis.
“I wanted to know what his plans are and what the future will bring. Luis is training hard. He told me that if a big club comes in for him now he is ready to talk to them.”
And De Boer admitted: “I’ve a back-up scenario ready.”
Clearly, the critical issue will revolve around how much the Anfield owners make available to Dalglish, but Babel looks certain to leave for around £8m.
Fulham and West Ham from the Premier League have declared their interest.
But sources in Germany believe the Holland star is set to move to the Bundesliga and accept a £65,000 a-week deal with Hoffenheim, who are owned by software m*illionaire Dietmar Hopp.
Schalke also want Babel, but won’t be able to match Hoffenheim’s personal terms.
Certainly Babel, who is facing an FA disrepute *enquiry for posting a twitter of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester *United shirt, has decided he’s spending too long on the Liverpool subs’ bench.
But as Dalglish attempts to rebuild the flagging squad he inherited, the key *January signing will be Suarez.
Earlier this season, Suarez – who conceded a last gasp penalty in the World Cup quarter-final that denied Ghana glory – revealed: “If I move I want to join a real football club where they play good, attacking *football.
“I will decline any offer from clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk or Saint *Petersburg where they offer you sacks full of money.’
“I’ve an *obsession to win *trophies.
“I am a South American with the mentality to win.
“This is why I was not ashamed to put my hand up on the goal-line in the World Cup.
“They called it the hand of the devil, but I really don’t care.”

There's cheating and getting away with it and cheating and giving your team a fighting chance. It's not like he dived or feigned injury or got an opponent sent off. He handled ball in the last minute and got punished for it but Ghana couldn't take advantage. If he was ever in the same situation for Liverpool I'd hope he do the sake thing 100 times out of 100.

I am not bothered by what he did at the World Cup, stuff like that happens all the time. I'm more concerned about his temperment. He bit an opponent on the shoulder a few weeks ago and received a 7/8 match ban.
Like we've all seen with Nando he is going to get an awful kicking if he comes to play in England. If people know he's got a short fuse then they'll traget him even more. We need to be sure he doesn't spend as much in the stands as on the pitch.

Kuyts figures aren't bad in Holland but not so good in England. This is mainly down to the fact he was played in a wide position more often than not. The Dutch league is a million miles from the PL but I do think Suarez is a quailty player who could do it on a better stage. How many of his goals have been penalties though? Thats the problem with Bent, he didnt cut it at Spurs, but at Charlton and Sunderland he looked a world beater, yet I dont think he adds much to the play, only goals, and most of them are penalties. Id much rather Suarez, younger, more exciting, has more going for him, skillful, quick, creative, and has a better resale value. Would also benefit Torres having Suarez over Bent, would also show a bigger sign of intent from the club, that we mean business. So far Villa are the only team in for Bent, where as a lot of teams have shown an interest in Suarez. Thats just my 2 cents worth anyway. Each to their own I suppose.

I don't think Bent brings much to the team though in his all round play. Granted he gets goals but I'd still pluck for Suarez. He could play in all 4 attacking positions in a 451. If we got Bent it would mean 442 again so can't see him fitting our preferred system.

Nice...
Love to see him at the club, quality player, the thoughts of himself & Torres together could in theory be an incredible partnership.
And yes, he does have a bit of c**tish streak in him, but its also something we've been lacking in our team for a long time.

Still all just hearsay & rumors, nothing more than that at the moment. I won't be believing anything until there is an official announcement. No-one had a hint of the Meireles signing until it was all done & dusted so you never know.

There's a huge buyout clause in Aguero's contract that's why none of the big clubs have been successful in signing him.
It's something like €50m

Hopefully Young but if not Nzogbia would be ok too.Not very fond of Downing. We need a winger who plays on the wing.Downing comes in field far too often.Would be made up with Suarez and Young though.I think better attacking players will take alot of pressure off our defenders.

There's one common denominator mate. And that's Ryan Babel. He's in his 4th season, and to be honest if he was good enough or could be bothered enough we'd have seen it from him now. Players like him need to be cleared out - I'm sick to my teeth of overpaid superstars who'd rather rap or tweet than play for the shirt.
If we can off Babel (and get a nice few quid trade) and replace with Suarez I'm absolutely stoked!

Totally agree. I've held out hope for Babel over the years. All that raw talent. Surely he'd come good. Every time he had a good game (few and far between if we're honest) I thought "this is the start of it, he's getting his game together" but no, for whatever reasons he just hasn't been able to play consistently to the level we all believed he could play at. Time is ticking already for his Liverpool career and if he can be used to get a good deal in the Suarez transfer, I'm all for it.

Risk you take on any player, especially a striker. Same could be said of any league in the world. Torres wasn't exaclty prolific in Spain, Kanouté is!
I like the look of his international goals, also it is good to know he can play with another striker.
Dream signing in my opinion, trying not to get carried away though.

And the Uruguay World Cup star wants to swap Amsterdam for Anfield before the transfer window closes.
He won't come cheap. With another two and a half years to run on his contract, Ajax will want £23 million.
Suarez is also on Tottenham's wish-list, but Harry Redknapp would first have to shift Robbie Keane and possibly Roman Pavlyuchenko too.
Kenny Dalglish has made support for Fernando Torres his No.1 priority.
Liverpool have had Suarez watched on several occasions and are in pole position to go in with a firm cash offer.
Suarez, 23, who has scored 81 goals in 108 matches for Ajax, was at the centre of one of the biggest storms of the World Cup.
He delibertately handled on the line in the final seconds of extra-time against Ghana, and Uruguay won the resulting shoot-out to make the semi-finals.
Suarez was last season's Dutch footballer of the year and is understood to be particularly keen to line up alongside Torres. He believes the partnership could work as well as his international link with Diego Forlan.
Ajax sources confirmed that talks with Liverpool began at the weekend.
With Suarez pushing for a move, Dalglish and the Kop may soon have something to smile about.

De Boer is open to the prospect of bringing Babel back to Amsterdam, as he feels there would be no transition period.
"The advantage is that he knows the Ajax system well," De Boer said of Babel.
Ajax would in all probability only be able to finance a deal for Babel if they sell Suarez and De Boer has warned that they will not allow the striker to leave for a pittance.
"We are resolute and do not want to lose Suarez but if a 'super club' offers an absurd amount, we would let him go," the Dutch coach told Ajax Life. "As it stands at the moment, he will stay with us for the remainder of the season."
Reports in the Netherlands suggest the "absurd amount" would be in the region of the £28.5m Manchester City paid Wolfsburg for Edin Dzeko.
