If they are that crap, consider buying somewhere else mate .....

otherwise, just imagine what they might be like, if you've ever got a problem or need help after you buy it etc !

While this is 720 & not 1080 HD ready, it does include a Saorview receiver in it for €129 and might be worth a look:

Mate if your getting a tele, Make sure you get a MPEG 4 , version, as that will give you RTE ONE and Two,TV3 on digital, as in the next 2 years, these stations will be going digital so your picture will be crystal clear.

Most of these shops, Tesco,Argos and co dont advertise MPEG 4, and only have MPEG 2 tele's which are the ones which work in England.

Bigron, Mrs Bren100 and I are getting a new tele for each other for Crimbo instead of a load of crap - I was going to head down to Hardly Normal or Power Shitty in Jan to look at TV's. Although Im in IT I dont know anything about TV's.

I was going to just go in and get a 32"-38" inch HD ready TV - but tell me more about MPEG4 TV's? Should I get a Plasma or an LCD? Am I right in thinking, do LCD only go to a certain size?

FAO Everyone: anyone recommend a good TV that they have? Im going to wall mount this one.

Seperatly: Im going to fill in the fireplace, take out the mantelpiece and put in a 1kw electric fire under it too - I can do it all myself and cable etc but just wondering if anyone has any experience on how far from the TV I should keep the fire? I could be a deciding factor on getting a 32 inch over a 36 or 38 inch if you know what I mean?

Basically Mate, Must of the TV'S which are on the market at the Moment are MPEG 2, which are only useful for England. If you plug your aerial into them, you will get RTE,TV3 but they will be the fuzzy verision of them.

In the Next two years, all those Aerials which are on your roof, will be gone, as Irish Television are going Digital and they have started that as of October this year.So all new TV'S been sold in Ireland have to have MPEG 4, which means that when you buy your new tele, and scan the stations(You wont have to plug it into your aerial) you will get crystal clear RTE AND TV3, as they have gone Digital. In the future more stations will be going digital, as at the moment Rte 1,Rte 2,TV3, 3E TNG4 are just a few.

So what your looking for, is a tele with MPEG, Or Saorview(thats the name of the company bringing Ireland into the Digital verision.

Heres a example on the Power city website,
    Powercity

Thanks for the info - just to get the aerial thing right in my head - if Im using SKY or NTL does the whole Mpeg4 thing matter for digital?

Is it just for aerial use - ie: if I get one of the 'dodgy' boxes and there was a fix for the current issue - then Mpeg4 comes into play?

And should I go LCD or Plazma?

No it wouldnt affect you if you were getting your RTE, on your Sky or NTL boxes, as Sky and NTL are Digital, where as at the moment, RTE and TV3 is on terrestrial which is your aerial.

If you Bought a Dodgy box(Not sure if RTE is on them) then You would get RTE Crystal clear as you have MPEG/Saorview.

Regarding LCD/Plazma Debate. That has been done to the death and it depends on the person been honest. Some people will tell you that Plazma is far superior, so people will say LCD. But i can only speak from experiences ive seen and had had.In work we had a 37 inch Sony Plazma and it was only constantly, and it burnt out after a couple of year. The lens in them burnt and we needed a new TV.

Now at Home ive a LCD and its Grand. Its a 37 inch for the room and does the job nicely and i havnt had a problem with it.

There is new L.E.D tele's out now which have a better quality of picture compared to the LCD,And Plazma, and are the lastest model out, if you dont want 3D tele.

If you can into any shop, you can see the difference in the quality of the picture between them all. Some times it will only be a slight difference, maybe colour or brightness, but thats what it all really comes to down to, is how clear the picture is, and at the moment LED has that.

What i will say to you is shop around, as i seen a 42 inch plazam in D.I.D last week for under 500 euro. Also if you are buying, Offer cash and ask for a few things to be thrown in,EG a stand or things like that. There is great offers to be had out there at the moment, so Check your local Powercity,Harvey Norman,D.I.D, Tesco.
