Just watched this on RTE player...really shocking stuff..especially the taxi driver who ended up homeless in 3 weeks. Shows how quick it can happen...

Fair play to that woman, many people would just give up on them...

I thought it very strange our lord mayor giving out about people begging on the streets recently.
Without charities like Simon and Focus Ireland and of course the work that Father Peter McVerry does a lot of these people would fall through the cracks in the pavement.

Another very sad thing is we've thousands of empty apartments / houses up and down the country, all owned by the state through NAMA now and half of which will never be sold and could even be knocked down ...

Why not give a couple of apartment blocks to these organisations and let them be used for some good, put a roof over some of the less fortunate peoples heads etc.

Not sure if residents associations would agree to that. There was no need to put that many up.
Was a case of rogue developers trying to make a quick and easy buck. Amazes me why banks did not do their research on this before lending out the money.

The banks were trying to make as much profit as possible..they were wreck-less in their lending...

Surely they must have known the houses were over priced. Surely someone at the bank must have been wary of putting all that money into a sector. It was a huge gamble.
If they had given even a quarter of that money out to small businesses it might have made a difference.
Hopefully some days someone will be made accountable.

There are loads of developments with no one living in them mate, countrywide, so just take over a couple of the completely empty ones and fill them with people in need. Personally, I'd give them a chance, maybe rent free for 3 years, then reduced rent for the next 2-3 years, give them time to settle in, try and rebuild their lives, hopefully get jobs etc.

Yes didn't realize that Clongriffin estate was so empty. Only saw it for the first time on Prime Time the other night.
Green Party have a lot to answer for as well. The amount of eyesores on view as a result of these unfinished developments is appalling. Did Greens even put in any objections on environmental grounds.

Hi,

Don't know mate, but at this stage we're all in this mess together so better off looking forward and seeing who can help us get out of it, rather than going back over who should have done / not done what (you'd swear I was talking about our beloved club there actually :D)

The way I see it is:

- some of the ghost estates up and down the country could be used to:

A) House those without a home for a few years, rent free, to give them a chance to start a new life for themselves, get a job hopefully etc

B) Rehouse some of the people from the troubled areas in Limerick / Dublin etc - perhaps relocating the people who want out of Moyross etc

C) The more remote and isolated ghost estates, could be use to relocate some of the trouble makers, from those problem areas - put them living in more remote locations, where they are unable to interact with the rest of us without having to travel longer distances etc.

Some of the vacant hotels could be used for:

A) short term accomodation, for the likes of asylum seekers

B) ...after some changes, like security doors etc ... to low security prisons to help deal with the overcrowding in the current prisons (obviously, by relocating the lower risk criminals to these new facilities etc)

C) ... after some changes.... conversion to more medical care facilities (perhaps doing a deal with the likes of VHI Swift HealthCare to do cheap care if they are given the properties etc)

Yeah I think if there are deserving cases then yes give it to them. But I think what will happen it may breed resentment in people who have to pay large rents.
