What a sorry state the construction industry in this country is in. McNamara and Pierce, two of the biggest and most successful firms in the country, gone within a week of each other. I know for a fact that a couple of other firms, even bigger than these are in danger of going to the wall too.

I imagine a lot of jobs will be lost from these two firms alone but the ripple effect from these two going will be massive, an awful lot of smaller subcontractors will be in serious danger now.

The knock on effect of this will be huge...
Pierce were building Wexford CoCo's new building, now left unfinished, a good few subcontractors are owed money from it.

    ****ing sickening that

i work for my dad in flooring, well, only 3 days a week now, but the credit that subcontractors have to give to these big builders is ****ing scandalous

there's been rumours for over 2 years regarding McNamaras though hasnt there, i was more shocked with Pierse going down to be honest

a mate of mine works for a joinery company that does most of Mcnamars work, i can only imagine how much they've been stung for

Thats madness remember working on loads of McNamara & Pierces jobs all over the city. I dont think we appreciated how good we had it .I also taught the start of 2012 was meant to be the start of a slow recovery in building its drying up even more from the looks......

building is gone for years and years. When you see nama talking about tearing down unfinished developments as opposed to finishing them what hope is there for future large scale development

Ye wont see Bernard McNamara struggle anyhow. I worked on his house on Ailsbury Road back in 2000/2001 I think and the amount of money he spent building this house was sick ! The fitted kitchen in it cost 100k + alone ! ! ! I'd say he has looked after himself and has a few quid tucked away

It probably only had a few weeks work left on it, then to be fitted out.
No one knows long it will take now, CoCo will have to sort out the bond etc. Could take a month or 2 to get work started back on it..
Pierce have been struggling to finish projects, so its no surprise that this hasn't been finished. You just have to wonder how they got all these jobs in the first place.

Government lobby plus they said they paid subys within 30 days of invoice which they never did. Peirse were awarded the motorway stops around the country there are 10 or so of us objected when it was announced by the minister for transport stating we never got paid on other jobs and started a campaign to inform the selection committee about contracts that we never got paid on. A month or so later peirses looked for administration we have F**K all hope of ever getting paid. I had to let 5 guys go, one my best mate he still hasn't got a job 18 months later.:(:(

It really was a joke that they got those motorway stops, they had 3 jobs on the go at the time in Wexford none finished. Subys walked off site in one. One of the jobs over-ran by a year and a half...

McNamara has a history of screwing subbies down the years, a favorite trick was to get in relatively small company's to do painting, joinery etc, telling them they'll only get paid at the end of a quarter and then just not paying them, knowing full well the small companies wouldnt be able to sue them for fear of going completely bust. They put a lot of people out of business using this tactic down the years.
Like yourself red4ever, I worked on that gaff on ailesbury road and it was indeed some incredible cash spent on that and his brothers gaff on morehampton road a year later.
These cnuts will walk away from the chaos they've caused and go living it up in marbella or somewhere with their buddies fingers and seanie the scumbag.
A military coup is needed in this country to reclaim the assets and the money which has been robbed from us and our children by this bourgeois government and banks.
    Now where's me granda's rifle?

Being there done that had a tax audit last year as I hadn't been able to pay all the paye and prsi I owed and wrote them letter explaining my circumstances. The tax man sent in an auditor he went through all the accounts for the four years before he found other invoices and retention not paid I am owed in the region of 480k from builders and company's like pierce and macs spent over 5k taking one of the to the high court got awarded my money 34k paid the legal costs never got a penny from the company. I can pay more money to get my award published unbelieveable how they can get away with it.

I ended up using our holiday money which the missus saved to pay the tax man.:(

That is sickening to hear mate, shows how the country is in the trouble its in, was working for O' Flynn construction and our section used to get extra deliveries etc. which were sent to the Senior Ptroject Managers house which was being built not far away, also sent groundworks, sparkies, blocklayers etc. out to his house between jobs on site, id say his house got built for nothing!

As someone who who has worked in the construction industry for 20 years, i have to say this is very fcuken sad ........ for ALL concerned.

I won't defend Bernie Mc, because he has only lost his pride ........ others will lose money owed, jobs, homes, small family business. Jayus, how do we pick ourselves up from this !!

I drive in beside it every day and it is finished from the outside...I hear that the county council are going to finish it themselves so should not take too long I'd imagine...draw up a spec of what is left to do and then tender it out...only a security guard in there are the mo though no much sign of activity as you can expect..
