4 days! would have take me 4 seconds. An American man has been sentenced to death for murdering a woman and her daughters in an horrific home invasion three years ago. Connecticut man Steven Hayes raped and killed pediatric nurse Jennifer Hawke-Petit in 2007. He also burned alive the woman's two daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela. It took a jury four days to decide on the death penalty http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Wo..._Death_For_2007_Murder_Of_Woman_And_Daughters
I agree, live in a windowless cell for next 50 years with just enough food and water to keep him going.
The problem with that mate, is that in time, people soften and a parole board or someone will ultimately free him. In certain circumstances, the only real solution to something like this is to take the life of the person who has been found guilty - although I would rather see him kept behind bars for several years before applying the death penalty, to allow time for appeals (if appropriate) for fear of a mistake having been made (not specifically in this instance but as a general rule) etc.
Jesus this story gets worse! ---------------------------------------- A Connecticut man has been sentenced to death for raping and murdering a mother and setting fire to her daughters while they were still alive. A jury in New Haven unanimously voted to send Stephen Hayes to death row after deliberating for four days. Hayes was convicted of breaking into the suburban home of Dr William Petit and his wife, paediatric nurse Jennifer Hawke-Petit, in 2007. The 48-year-old woman was forced to withdraw money from the bank while her husband and two daughters were held hostage at home. She begged staff for help but when she returned to the house she was raped and strangled to death. Hayes also viciously attacked Dr Petit with a baseball bat, but he was able to escape to a neighbour's house. Their daughters, 11-year-old Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley, were tied to their beds and doused in petrol before the home was set on fire. Hayes' lawyers attempted to persuade the jury to spare him the death penalty by portraying him as a drug-addicted thief who had never been violent before. God will be the final arbiter and I think the defendant faces far more serious punishment from the Lord than he can ever face from mankind. Dr William Petit They declared co-defendant Joshua Komisarjevsky was the mastermind of the crime. He is charged with sexually assaulting Michaela and helping to burn down the family's home. Komisarjevsky will be tried next year and if found guilty, could also be sentenced to death. Prosecutors said both men were equally responsible and the crime called for the death penalty, saying the family were tormented for seven hours before they were killed. Outside the New Haven court, Dr Petit told reporters: "This is a verdict for justice. This is an appropriate and just decision. "Crimes like this have to be pursued and prosecuted vigorously... I was for the death penalty. "In a civilised society people need to be responsible for their actions. Steven Hayes Hayes joins nine other men on Connecticut's death row "We heard the defendant has never been responsible for actions for most of his life. "God will be the final arbiter and I think the defendant faces far more serious punishment from the Lord than he can ever face from mankind." Hayes did not testify during the trial but told a psychiatrist he wanted to "look like a monster" by taking the stand and express no remorse, so the jury would sentence him to death. But the convicted murderer also said he tried to kill himself in prison because he felt guilty and remorseful, and feared isolation in jail for the rest of his life. During the trial, jurors heard eight days of gruesome testimony, saw photos of the victims' charred beds, ripped clothing and ransacked rooms. Hayes was convicted of six capital felony charges, three murder counts and two charges of sexually assaulting Mrs Hawke-Petit. He will join nine other men on Connecticut's death row but the state has only executed one man since 1960, so it is likely Hayes will spend years - if not decades - in prison.
Any man accused of rape should be castrated. It's a horrible act and it should be punished a lot more severely.
