Violence has broken out between gardaÃ* and students in Merrion Row after riot gardaÃ* forcibly ejected students who had occupied the lobby of the Department of Finance in Dublin city centre.
Violent scenes are continuing between a large number of riot police, gardaÃ* and students.
Some students have bloody noses and one student has been carried away, possibly unconscious.
Some students have expressed deep upset at the outbreak of violence.
Mounted gardaÃ* and armoured vehicles are also at the scene.
Earlier, a number of protestors occupied the Department of Finance and several hundred students staged a sit-down protest outside the building.
The unrest follows a student protest in Dublin city centre against plans to increase registration fees by third level students has ended.
Thousands of students earlier marched to Merrion Square, where they were addressed by student leaders, among them Union of Students in Ireland President Gary Redmond.
The march was organised by the USI, which has said any attempt to impose cuts on students will meet with strong opposition.
It said earlier it expected up to 25,000 students to attend.
USI says thousands of students will be forced to drop-out of college if the registration fee rises again.

It's definitely terrible times we are in but we need more than students out in protest because what our current government have allowed to happen to our economy is disgraceful and it's horrific that they are still in power and still making critical decisions on our future, kids futures and their kids futures. I don't think we have an alternative to the current government but a change is as good as a rest as they say.
The gards are a disgrace aswell . I'd imagine any violence that erupted today was provoked by them , they like a bit of aggro from time to time and what's funny is that the government are taking them for a ride with the rest of us with their pay cuts etc so they should leave people be when they want to voice their anger and frustration.

Certain groups seem to hijack every single protest in this country(if the tweets I've seen are accurate), then a perfectly legitimate protest gets headlines for the wrong reasons.

That's a bloody ridiculous thing to say mate, bit of a huge jump to conclusion there. Could just as easily be a bunch of toerags who feel that society "owes" them a free ride through college, with the few who are working paying for the cost of their education when we can't even afford to pay all the people on the dole. Where the hell is the money going to come from? I had massive student loans to pay off after college, because I paid my own way. The fcuking guards have a job to do without getting tarred with the disgrace brush.
Fair play to the students..there should be more protests againts this corrupt and farcical excuse of a government.

was at the protest today, some amount of people there and was just a bit of craic for me and a few lads, but lads were drinking and stuff so there was bound to be a small bit of trouble in a crowd of 40k 'FIANNA FAILURE' and other such banners were hung up on the happenny bridge

Don't think anyone feels this, and the numbers on the dole will only rise if people have to drop out of college because they can't afford to pay fees. Paying a students fees for college costs less than putting them on the dole for a year and it puts them in a better position to pay back the taxes spent on them through income tax and educated students are usually the higher earners.
I was at the protest today and it was massive, was told that by the time the front reached Merrion Square the back was still at O' Connell Street. Just hope the government get the message and the idiots who started rioting haven't ruined it.

I was part of it as well today, over 30,000 students and am just a bit pissed that the 50 or so who caused trouble get the headlines. Hoped that the message we all came together for would get priority over a small bit of trouble...

You could be right and I could be wrong but it's not a ridiculous thing to say . The gards have a reputation. Have you been paying attention to the news lately ? There are 4 gards on trial for breaking into a teenagers home , holding his mother in hostage in their bathroom while they carried out an assualt on the teenager and I know you may say that's just 4 out of the whole force but it's just an example of the type of behaviour and attitude they have.
I didn't see the news footage of the student march but the OP says some students had bloody faces and one was carried away on a stretcher. The students could have ended up with bloody faces from hitting each other but I doubt it , they could have attacked the gards first and ended up with bloody faces because the gards defended themselves but I doubt it. The gards are peace keepers and if they have to resort to violence to contain a peaceful protest march then they should not be in the job because that's not keeping the peace.
i heard 50 students came over from napoli for the protest and there the ones who started the trouble

I feel for the students but also feel there is far bigger issues.Mate of mine goes to a university, pays the regestration fee,his da owns 3 shops in the town, all flying,no money issues. Is it not a bit unfair that certain elements of society dont pay much for college?
9k is what they are talking a year in England.Mate of mine goes to college in the US and by god do they pay.
Do higher fee's not mean better services, better lecturers, better equipment and no more dependence on the government to pay these type of things.
I dont what i said is right or wrong but i really feel that the majority of joe public arent too bothered and more worried about jobs mortages etc.

As far as I know mate those Garda haven't been convicted of anything yet. I for one hope to god they get aquitted on the charges.
As for the people who ended up with bloody faces,I seriously doubt they were sitting there peacefully protesting and the police attacked them. I'm not saying everyone who got injured in the fracas was aggressive towards the guards but they can blame the fcuking idiots who were for their injuries.
For the record I completely support the protest. If more people got off their arse this government would have been brought down long ago.

Looking at the video's on You Tube they Gardai showed their true colours yesterday they battered the shit out of the students. At the end of one video one student asked one senior gardai about why did they beat the students up. The garda just turned his back, its that type of attitude why the gardai are hated in this country.

ask the average person and students are hated a lot more.
My sister in law was at the protest yesterday and said there was some total shitheads at it.
If a guard asks you to refrain from something or to move on and you refuse, whats he meant to do.If you offer resistance to his forceably moving you, again what is he meant to do?
Did students(a minorty)not charge the Riot poilce and throw stuff at them. What did they expect fully trained RIOT police to do,applaud them.
Is there not stories that Labour Youth and SWP sections went looking for trouble from the Guards.Go looking for trouble and when it finds you bitch about your head hurting.
Got this from another site
Ok just to clear things up I think this is what happened.
1.official student protest - was a success and was peaceful.
2. A large number of students thought it wasnt enough and planned a peaceful sit-in in DoF and sitting on the street outside.
3. Trouble makers come and start throwing things at Gardai from the crowd standing up.
4.Gardai get frustrated cause they cant get the people throwing the objects.
5. Gardai snap and start beating the living hell out of the peaceful protestors sitting down.
6. Many protestors react to this and start fighting back and are joined by the troublemakers.
7. A lot of bloodied students and 3 injured cops.
Is this accurate?

A few bad apples spoil most protests and innocents get a slap. Why did a perfectly peacful effective protest get ruined by morons.

Its not one way to look at it its the truth. The labour youth ans swp went lookign for trouble. That protest to be effective needed to be self policed and not try to sit in in the department of education. The quote from the old man on tv news sums it up"who do they think is going to pay for their education".
Why the fcuk was thousands of taxpayers ****ing money wasted on guards yesterday. The protest wont work,it brought a bad light to students plight, cost a fortune and took up part of the nations capital for a few hours.
Great pr.
Also think of it from the guards you are berating side. They have been stung with more taxes than anyone and levies and looked on yesterday at being called scum, shud be ashamed etc, cans thrown at them by people claiming ireland owes them an education.
Must have been a ****ing pain in the arse for them. But hey their just scumbag guards.
Struggling to pay my mortage, working a full time job and doing door work at the weekend. My bigest worry is getting the kids a ben 10 bike and the plight of students on Arts degrees worries me very little.

I am taxpayer as well but I was a student and still am technically as I do night courses after work every Tues, Weds and Thursday to further better myself. If I want my kids to have future(when I have some please god) I want them to get an education and that will allow them to get a job in the future because the rate its going the country won't have many and if college fees go up our younger generation some who don't have the means to go to college either finanical or disability won't have a chance. Coming from a background I came from I got a grant to pay my fees every year but when you have to wait 3/4 months to get that grant like a lot of students have to do they come out at the end of college heavily in debt before they even get a job.
Everyone should have a chance no matter what colour or religion or family background.
This is in general my worry is for the generation of kids coming up because the future doesn't look good and all of us need to pull together but it won't happen.

i also come from the same background and went to college till we had our first kid.Too many people from backgrounds that dont need it get to get through college at just the reg fee.
Too many take advanatge of the system and i believe it needs fixing.the same price for everyone is not what is needed and surely there can be no disagreement about that.

Means testing seems like the fairest way with these things. People who can afford to pay full whack should pay it, if someone can contribute a portion of it well let that be the case but if some one comes from a poverty stricken family and has the points to go to college well a few thousand euro should not stand in their way. They should set up a system were the fee becomes a loan to the people who cant afford it and they pay it back when they enter the work place.
Our social welfare system is a joke. Offtopic a bit here but feel like a rant ! I take home €400 I have 2 kids and a mortgage and when my girlfrien lost her job and applied for benefits, she was means tested and it was decided that she wasn't entitled to the full jobseekers payment of €193 but entitled to €135. My issue is that millionaires, people who don't need to work a day in their lives and pay sh!t all tax can claim child allowance and be payed the same as my girlfriend gets as her child allowance, without them being means tested ! Were's our sense of equality , it's an appalling situation

One of the biggest problems with yesterday was these idiots who went on to ruin what would have been a hugely successful protest, instead its remembered for all the wrong reasons.
I'm in college now and I'm working as well so it's some of my tax money going towards my fees and as well as this when I get a proper job I'll be paying much more on tax and then I'll be paying my fees back and more than that so really its a minimum investment by the government rather than investing in more dole payments for drop outs.
People with kids should be thinking about this just as much as present students because it will affect your kids in the future.

Are ye takin the p!ss ? I'd rather my taxes paid for someone's education than paid off a property developers loans ! 50 fcuking billion euro of our money has been pumped into one bank alone and that 50 billion wasn't picked off the money tree in the botanic gardens. Your taxes will be servicing that debt, if or when you have kids when they grow up and begin to pay tax that tax will service these debts and god only knows how many generations of tax payers it will take to clear these debts.
Your tax is supposed to pay for efficient health care, infrastructure and guess what decent education not to clear a property developers bad loans.
