..Barcelona have begun negotiations with PSV Eindhoven over a move for highly-rated midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The Catalan club are understood to be targeting the 24-year-old as an alternative to Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, who has been repeatedly linked with a return to his boyhood club.

However, Barca have reportedly admitted defeat over the Spanish skipper because they cannot afford the Gunners' asking price, which is in the region of £45million.

A Barca source was quoted as saying: "The money situation in the club changes the situation and today it is impossible to accept a big expense for the reinforcements."

The Primera Liga club are instead understood to be in talks over a January move for Dutchman Afellay, who has made an impact at PSV and on international duty for the Netherlands this season.

Afellay, who has been linked with numerous outfits including Manchester United and Liverpool, has confirmed his desire to depart the Eredivisie side for a bigger club.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder, who is out of contract at PSV in June next year, could be the subject of a bidding war amongst a host of European clubs in the January transfer window after turning down a new deal in Eindhoven

another lost target it seems

Need to step in and offer him a spot with us .... the lad has said he prefers to move to the Premier league has mentioned us and utd as his preferred destination.

This is the kind of Player imo NESV are talking about

1.Young
2.Value for money .... never more so with his contact up in the summer.
3.Resale value there ... easily put in bid of £5m and watch the value treble in a few hours.
4.Talented .... can play both wings or through the middle {best position }

ok NESV ... over to you

Only risk is that he turns into another Ryan Babel, there are similarities there about a hyped up player like when we signed Ryan without having proved much on international or european stage. I'm still all for taking a chance by the way.

There's always going to be a risk .... but with him just out of contract.

Imo we will at worst get our out lay back .

Lads only 24 and can play in 3 positions .When you have the likes of Barcelona stepping in , it says a lot imo.

Yeah there is defo more pros than cons in signing this lad. As I said I'm all for it, I would just be more wary than I was when we got Babel and thought he was going to be a massive player for us.

Yeah but say we pay £5m and he doesn't suit us/premier league id still say we could get at least £10m for him.

If this lad had a 3-5 year contract we would be looking at around £15m imo.

So if after paying £11.5m for Ryan and we could still get £23m back... id say not bad business.

I'd take a punt on him for next season.

And if the Eden Hazard rumours are true then that would be an absolutely devestating foward line for the 11/12 season

Thing is Rocco as he is just about a bosman his wages will be massive. Therefore if he is actually shit we have a player on a long term contract that no one will pay decent money for and no one will match is wages. Not sure if I've ever even seen this lad play so I don't know whether he's good or not but he's certainly not risk free.

I can see Utd and City chasing all our targets as well, especially if they are Hazard, Defour, and Affelay as reported. Just hope we can pull them off.
