this is gonna get a mixed reaction this week id say on the one hand if we play like we did yesterday we should win no problem on the other roy's away record is shocking and if we go back into our shell we could get beat again

Bolton are a much changed side to the long ball side they were , this will be a much harder game than the last game v Blackburn , but hoping Roy throws away 35 years of over defensive football away from home and remembers with just 6 wins in 66 games in the premierleague ......... the mindset is wrong .

Just hope he realises what the team he has are capable of rather than playing the game he always has away from home. Whoever/whatever sparked the tactics on Sunday will hopefully inform him that being away from home changes nothing. We need to make teams fearful of us again by making them play our game whether we're at home or away.

Play the same side, injuries permitting.

Kyrgiakos should keep Davies quiet.

Bolton are very hard to beat, draw specialists, with only one loss in 9, and that was away from home. Their defence is actually better than ours at the moment, I just hope our forwards will have more about them. Hopefully 1-2, could see a score draw.

Roy away record is quiet poor...if he wants to stay on as manager he really needs to put a run a of results together and get us clear of the bottom half of the table...
Setting the team up for a draw here isnt really good enough, need to play the same way against Blackburn and get a win...

Never an easy place to go the reebok no matter what type of form your in. Hopefully the perfomance from Blackburn and the confidence that the players got from that win (especially Nando) can be shown here again. Cant see the team being much different and I hope the greek starts because I personally think he is our toughest defender and we will need plenty of this as Bolton know how to throw themselves around.

Maverick
27-10-2010, 02:59 PM
Unfortunately I can see a defensive line up for this one due to Boltons physical approach. These games are important as they will define our eventual position in the table at the end of the season. We have to start showing that we are capable of brushing aside these so called lesser teams.Back to back win would show great improvement and give the lads a much needed confidence boost.

He shouldnt change the team at all, team played well against Blackburn and he should throw caution to the wind and use the sam eteam, no one would blame him for that. Team playing well should be the team starting.

I would argue this new look Bolton side should be easier for us to beat than the old kick and run style team they had. We should not be bullied and have better ball players in our team so I am going here expecting a win and nothing less.

I'd imagine we're looking at the same 11 as last week but I'm more worried about the tactics we're going to employ. Please let's attack them from the off. Go toe to toe with them in a footballing contest and as long as we match their workrate there can only be one winner.

1 league away win in 2010 and Hodgsons cautious approach says this game has 0-0 written all over it but i really fancy Torres to bag at least 1,wouldnt put money on it but i think we might snatch a win.

I hope its more of the same from Roy, I'd be pretty confident going into this one after the way he put us out against Blackburn but his away record at Fulham and us so far makes me nervous.

Have a great feeling for Raul, one of his bullits is due to smash the net soon enough!

I don't take any credit for discovering this but have checked it myself on an date calculator

On Sunday it will be 442 days since Roy's last Premiership away win on the 15th August 2009.

Obviously I'd love a win tomorrow but if we at least draw with the same performance as last week I think I'd still be happy because aslong as we keep playing like we did for 70 against Blackburn a decent run will be on the way. Free flowing attacking football with the same determination as last week and I'll have a smile on my face tomorrow.

We need to be beating Bolton if theres any intent there to better our situation. We should be attacking from the off and leave off the negative attitude for tougher games. There is no excuse to fear Bolton regardless of how they are playing.A win is crucial today to build confidence and morale and help us back to where we belong.Come on Roy the emphasis is on you to set us up because we are more than capable of beating this shower.Back to back wins please.Hopefully Nando puts on a show today.

True, but he's very involved in the game so far, which is a good thing.

Agreed, a little bit of a raise in tempo and guile and we'll open these lot up.

Contained Bolton quite easily with Soto completely dominant in CB, delighted he got the nod this week again.

My only concern is that they've had a couple of pen shouts that the ref turned down, but we can't afford any more of those, sooner or later the ref will give one.

He's shown for the ball every time we've got forward, and he looks alot fitter then in recent games.

However, his first touch not being great, and hence giving the ball away, should not be mistaken for looking lively.

He's getting there and if he gets a chance like he did in the first few minutes, Ive every confidence in him finding the net.

Yes he has been a little off so far this season but so has the whole team. Lets not forget he has got the winner in both games we have won this season.

Jesus will people ever give over - commenting on every bloody thing about Torres every second. Yes he's been off form for a while but how many premier league wins would we have without him? - zero. Winner last week and set up the goal with a touch of class this week. He's probably not happy with where we are at the mo but who is. Maybe if people keep moaning about him it will become a self fulfilling prophecy and he'll leave - sick of the stick he's getting from some fans

Agree with everything you said there pal except the bit about nando. I'm not a body language expert so I'm not going to try and read it but whatever about his touch not being great, his confidence being low the very least you expect from anyone is 100% effort and there's no way he worked hard enough in the first half. The second half he was much brighter and ngog obviously helped because he done great when he came on.
Make no mistake, that's a great 3 points and hopefully that will take some pressure off. Both centre halfs were excellent,Lucas played well and maxi and Gerard were decent. I think 442 is definitely the way to go because ngog deserves to play and Torres needs some help up there.

I don't think Nando had a great game by his standards at all.

But read back a few pages and you'll see some posters saying he didn't look bothered... thats what I was getting at with the "100% effort" comment as that has got to be your starting point for any team, nevermind Liverpool FC.

He's struggled since the bckend of last year, through the world cup and into this season.
But he's gotten us 2 winning goals and set up the winner today to get us our 3 wins to date. As I said, his contribution this season doesn't seem or is as much as his last few with us, but what he has given us this year has been vitaly important.

I can't wait till he's 100% fit again and happy in his own ability/confidence.

Great 3 points. Ngog made the difference for me. Have to be honest though - we're still poor. Torres definitely improved when Ngog came on but overall his performance was lacklustre. I love him like every other red but something is amiss...

Lively to me means bursting a gut, closing down at every opportunity and being on your toes at all times in case the ball comes your way. What we saw from him today nost certainly wasn't lively. He tried, and kept going even though his touch and his passing was awful, but that does not constitute liveliness!! Nando gave the best performance I have ever witnessed from any centre forward at Anfield v Real Madrid a couple of years ago. He is currently a shadow of that player.... and it's not out of order to say that his body language is not positive for his team...it's a fact. He walked past Maxi at the end with a scowl on his face and headed for the tunnel.

Anyway, positive is we kept a clean sheet and got the 3 points. Confidence will be lifted another little bit and we can improve again. Pints!!

Delighted for Maxi he got that goal, might give him a confidence boost, had a good attempt with that overhead, Soto and Skrtel were immense again, hurts to say it but Carra shouldent be starting when we've got Johnson back, fair play to him though, he doesnt like playing Rb but has done a good job of it whenever he needs to, cant see us getting much out of Chelsea but this could be a kick up in the a**e

It's all about results when you are in the relegation zone but in the first half we were slow, sloppy and predictable. Joe Cole seriously needs to get the finger out. He's not worth 90 quid a week at the moment, nevermind 90k. Great result but the performance will not scare Chelsea. Anyone know anything about Cole's injury?

Roy Hodgson is waiting to discover the extent of Joe Cole's injury with the England international set to have a scan on his hamstring on Monday.

Liverpool's No.10 was forced off the field during the 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers and the Reds boss is hoping the scan will be a positive outcome.

"Joe has a slight hamstring injury so he will have a scan tomorrow," said Hodgson.

"Hopefully he will be ok but I can't say how long he will be out until we get the results of the scan.

"Often these muscle injuries always seem to take ten days to two weeks, but I know Joe will be keen to be fit for Chelsea next weekend. We'll have to wait and see."

Just back from the match there, wrecked after the whole day.

Thought it wasnt a great game and end 0-0 untill maxi popped up, scrappy game and we played way to deep at times, if we had gone with 2 up front we would have won it easily.

Was in the lower and althought it wasnt a great atmosphere it was much better then i expected, and the last 20 mins it got real good, away end went crazy when we scored and that maxi song went on for around 5 mins after, i love it.

Saw 2 guys thrown out in our end but dont know why and at least 4 bolton fans got in the away end and got thrown out to.

6 maybe 6.5 at best.I don't blame him as I don't think he's accustomed to playing the way Roy has sent him out.I thought he gave away the ball too often but that was mainly down to the fact he was looking to move forward most of the time which IMO is refreshing.Still finding his feet at the moment but I have a very good feeling about him.

Thought it was a godsend when Cole pulled up injured. He was shocking again and offers us no width. He has to be played behind Nando or not at all. Ngog was class at holding the ball up when he came on, hopefully play two up top next week against Chavs but doubt it.

Nando does not look fit to me and is it just me or does he look heavy and laboured? Big arse syndrome? Great flick for goal and I love the man but he does not look anywhere near himself fitness/touch and sharpness wise.

Not the best performance but a lot of teams will struggle at the Reebok this year like the scum did. Well done Roy and the lads.

I actually thought that Torres was starting to show glimpses of his former self today. Went through or around a few defenders in the second half, didn't have the end product but looks a bit sharper. Another game or two with the same development and he'll be a real threat.

We looked like a team still without belief. There were a few breaks that nearly came off and we could've won by a few. That said I thought Bolton should've had a pen too. If we can somehow pull off a win against Chelsea the bounce would be back in their step. Likewise a loss now when we're not back to our best could be a big setback for confidence and morale. It's a difficult time, there are games to build on after the Chelsea match and given the current circumstances if you gave me a nil nil now I'd take it. IMO it's not defeatist, I think realistically we need to avoid defeat and things could look a lot brighter with Wigan Stoke and West Ham to come with a bit of confidence and momentum behind us.

Bolton 0 Liverpool 1
- Maxi 86

Well, that was a welcome 3 points for Liverpool. It was far from an exemplary display though and we had some fortune to take the win in a match that was fairly even. We had more footballing scoring opportunities perhaps but Bolton had a few close chances and this match could have gone either way.

Hodgson picked the exact same team as the last time, again with Gerrard in the advanced midfield role. However, when N’Gog came on and switched to 4-4-2, Liverpool created more space – discussed below. The team were started 4-2-3-1 as follows:

----------------------- Reina ---------------------
Carragher - Kyrgiakos – Skrtel - Konchesky
------------- Lucas ---------- Meireles ----------
---- Maxi ---------- Gerrard ---------- Cole ----
----------------------- Torres ---------------------

Subs: N’Gog for Cole on 61 mins, Poulsen for Meireles on 89 mins

Liverpool had the better of the first half and were combining reasonably well, with Gerrard and Torres attempting to link up with Cole and Maxi. Maxi played reasonably well again I thought and was involved in several of the chances. Much of course has been written and spoken about Torres. He may not be at his perfect best, but he is still an awesome player. Gerrard was involved again but wasn’t at his perfect best either.

Indeed it was Fernando that had the first chance when he met a Gerrard corner to head it close over the bar. It was Gerrard and Torres again a few minutes later when they combined to put Torres through on goal. Nando could have hit it first time on his right foot but selected instead to take it inside only to see his window of opportunity close as he hurried a poke with his left. In hindsight first time would have been the best option. Then Maxi nearly threaded a ball through to Torres with some good smart running through from Fernando but the pass was a little too heavy and was cleared by Jaaskelainen.

Then Bolton had a chance when Holden struck a volley with pace from outside the box but it was too close to Reina who saved well. It showed however that Bolton weren’t going to be a walkover. Carragher was under a bit of pressure and tackled awkwardly to penalty claims and then was caught for pace getting back to cover and jumped to block a cross only for the ball to graze his arm. The penalty shouts were ignored and rightly so as it would have been very harsh. Still, these can be given and it does show that Carra is by no means quality enough I think to play at right back for us as he just lacks enough pace.

Maxi was then involved for us as he set-up Gerrard for a shot from just outside the box but his shot went quite wide - so no magic goal from Stevie G.

Liverpool at the start of the 2nd half were able to hold their own and create some half-chances but none of significance. Then Cole picked up an injury giving N’Gog a chance. N’Gog went into the forward line but his main usefulness consisted of tying up a Bolton defender. Liverpool were 4-4-2 with Gerrard playing slightly deeper and on the right, and Maxi on the left. But with N’Gog up front this gave Torres better support and more room to operate and fewer markers.

Then from a corner, Kyrgiakos had a header that just went over. This was followed by a flamboyant Liverpool move between Maxi, Gerrard and a Torres header back which resulted in a flashy overhead from Maxi from the edge of the box just going over brushing the top of the net.

Then Bolton had a flurry of chances - first a weak penalty shout for a push, then a good save from Reina, then a headed corner just over, then a shot just wide followed by an inswinging free-kick which was glanced by Davies deep in the box but which went inches narrowly wide with Reina beaten. That was a real let-off for us. Had that gone in I think we would have lost and it would be all doom and gloom in any post-match discussion. That’s football.

But for once, lady luck was on our side. It was Lucas who collected the ball deep in their half with Bolton pressed back. He fed a pass to Torres on the left of their box who backheeled it through the legs of the Bolton defender and into the path of Maxi who had made a run from ‘deep’. Due to N’Gog’s presence across the 18 yard line, Maxi was able to get through into this space unfollowed and get off a toe-poke shot from close range which squirmed under the hand of Jaaskelainen, bouncing up and hitting the bar before landing in. Not the best finish in the world but a reasonable one, and a reasonable move from Liverpool.

It was enough to claim all 3 points. The tally at the end of the match read Bolton’s 14 attempts to Liverpool’s 10 attempts, matching the closeness of this game. Both teams had chances, and there should have been more goals and its arguable who had the best chances. It was not a classic match though.

This result puts Liverpool on 12 points from 10 games, so we are now 3 points behind Spurs who are in 5th place and 5 points behind Man City in 4th. Our chances of getting in the top-4 may still be slim, but points-wise, we certainly have a fighting chance of that.

So, what to conclude from that game? Liverpool did well against Blackburn, dominated them in fact, but with this match against Bolton it shows that when teams are better we are just about able to compete with them and no more. The fact that it took N’Gog’s “presence” to help us score exemplifies that we are just not good enough to break teams open and to get enough goals with our preferred formation of 4-2-3-1. It is a good formation for us, but its not giving us enough goals with the personnel that we have.

People talk about confidence. I’m not so sure about that. A lot of players get a lot of opportunities in matches and only some of those come good. We are like any other team in that regard except that we are just not creating enough opportunities. Football is a sport of probability. If we or any team keep doing the right things, it will come good most of the time. There of course will always be off days. But we are just not creating enough of the good things, we are not doing enough things right, and when the luck goes against us it can result in pretty bad results indeed.

I don’t have confidence in our mental position and attitude though. The players do battle to some degree, but where is the digging deep spirit, the Istanbul all-or-nothing fight? Are players really putting their hearts on the line each match? I don’t see it anyway. Have players, even the likes of Stevie G, lost just a small percentage of their personal fight? Carragher is being let down by his body and age. Time waits for no man. Others don’t have excuses, and indeed have never shown the spirit that Fans demand. Overall though, we just don’t have enough good players in all the positions, but that perhaps is stating the obvious. With all out efforts though, we could certainly do better. And here I don’t think Hodgson is a figure that motivates enough. He seems too ‘old school’, too comfortable and doesn’t seem to have the right type of passion.

Next up its Chelsea in the league on Sunday at 4pm. I fear we will lose that one. The players will do us ok, I would hope, it may only be 1 or 2-0 or something, but I cant see us putting the fear of God into this Chelsea team. Liverpool players may feel the same. But who knows. Its football, lady luck plays a part, and I hope she is playing on our side that day.

Before that its Napoli on Thursday at home. Less luck needed …..

what a sweat. talk about hard earned victory.
Tought to many players were once again playing terrible Nando and Stevie G most of all. Both had great chances to bury the ball in the back of the net and didnt take them. If Nando, Stevie and J Cole were in form we would have killed bolton yesterday.

Just glad f the 3 points in the end, need to pick up the pace big time if we can get any thing next week.
