Looking for advice on a starter kit any makes/models I should avoid.
I've seen Drumfire and a kit in Thomann (milennium MX222) price looks great but unsure of the quality.
I've also seen a Pearl kit I know the name but havent a clue.
    Thanks

Are you planning to actually practice your ass off in order to learn properly?

Or are you just looking to try it out for a while to see if you like it?

If it's the former, then I suggest you invest in something decent that will last you a long time. I bought a Pearl kit a few years back and it was worth every penny.

If it's the latter, then you could pick up the components separately on e-bay pretty cheaply. Just get yourself a cheap kick, snare, and hi-hat and see how you go.

Depends how serious your lad is about getting into it? Its an expensive instrument to take up so if i were you i'd play it safe with a cheap & cheerful starter kit. Litterally get him something to just tap away on for the time being. 2nd hand would be worth looking at.

If he then takes it seriously & wants to move on then Pearl, Yamaha and Tama are only a few brands which are top end drum kits.

Check out the drum basement in MusicMaker just off Grafton street if your around Dublin. Some nice deals in there from time to time.

I have a millennium electric kit I bought as a beginner.
    Millennium is Thomann's own brand.
Does the job it's sounds like it's what your looking for.
I think you should get him something like that to get him going and he can always upgrade in the future.
I never took any lessons but I'd advise them.
The reason I didn't is because I'm a guitarist and bassist and I just play drums for fun.
Its like learning to drive if you do it wrong you can get bad habits and it's hard to set them right.
If there's anything else I can help you with give us a shout.

Edit: I'm not recommending the electric kit I'm recommending the millennium brand :)

    Sound lads,
He's on his first lesson tomorrow so see what happens. I'll have a sniff in X-music and see what the prices are like would love to buy Irish but Thomann entry level is hard to ignore but then again Pearl would be easier to shift afterwards if it turns into a clothes horse.
Have to say one of the lads in there told him to practise on a pillow to get his arms used to it and the pillow doesnt bounce so its the better for him?
It must be phase as I havent heard him practicing yet!
