Hope you're right mate, Konchesky looks like he will be fit for the Steaua game, so if Torres looks a bit more interested, and Meireles & Cole start then I might start to believe. All things considered, its been a tough start to the season fixture wise.

I'd like to think he'll put out a team thats good enough to have a go even. Mancs have had a shakey start to the season but then again they always do. They might have had an easier start fixture wise but you can see they are playing good football. Thats something that's only a rumour around Anfield these days.

I dont know why Babel is being overlooked in peoples probable line ups. Jova has been given more of a chance to show what he can do this early in the season than Babel in his whole Anfield career. Im not a huge Babel fan but Jaysus give me him instead of Jovanovic everytime.

Gerrard isnt diciplined enough to anchor midfield, if we lined up like above we'd get completly overrun in the centre and would get anhiliated.we need a defensive mid-masc type player in there,preferably one who can play a simple [B]forward[B]pass wonder could agger do that job?

I know there is cause for pessimism but they've conceded 5 goals in last 2 games and we've kept 2 clean sheets. If nando is fit and defence do its bit we could pullout a win here.
A lot will depend on how we do in midfield. Alonso and masch bossed it in most encounters but I'm less confident about Poulsen and Lucas. Getting the better of scholes is key

Its not that we cant buy a goal lads, its that we cant string two passes together and look threatening or create fluid attacking movement at all. We are slow, rpedicatable and the two holding midfielders offer nothing in creativity.

United will come at us, as expected, so the two lads int he middle will be busy doing what it is, that they enjoy doing, chasing and hounding and tackling but we then need them to get our creative players on the ball early and in good positions, ie gerrard, torres and cole.

Never said it before with the squad they always had and still have a strong squad ..... but i feel this season we will see them slip a bit how much ? and will they then invest in top draw players?
Not judging smalling on 1 game ive seen him play the very very very odd game Fulham and in both games he was very poor , think he has been bought on the back of his young international appearances.
Remember Fulham hardly played the lad and took him from Maidstone which he only also played a handful of games around 10 .
Hernandez looks most likely to be worth the gamble but £17m for Smalling and Bebe seems a huge gamble imo.
Time will tell .

Valencia played neither of the last two league games, and didn't even make the bench against Everton. Against West Ham he wasn't even considered as a sub. Whiskey Nose seems to have gone off him. I'd rather have seen Nani out than Valencia to be honest.

You may recall that he handed Manure a penalty against Tottenham a couple of years ago due to a blatant dive by Ronaldo. Only seconds earlier he denied Spurs a blatant penalty when Modric was wrestled to the floor at the other end. That penalty would have given Spurs a 3:0 lead instead somehow they lost 4:2 and the title was cruelly denied it's rightful place at Anfield. Anyway it's all history now. If we play like we did against Birmingham, then Manure will not need Webb's help, regardless he is their insurance policy!

Have always said we paid £17m for a right back so play him as a right back and dont think he would make those runs from right midfield as he he gets space coming from the full back spot ..

I agree with the idea that Glen is a confidence player; if the team is playing well (and the defence excellent) he is a great asset. But he's not a leader or one to step up when times are tough. He seems to lose concentration at times too. I've been hopeful that with maturity he will become more thoughtful about his game, and I've always believed you can learn the defensive side of the game (positionally etc) while his type of attacking qualities are a born talent.

Sorry gone of topic slightly , my formations are 4-3-3 , just as i see we have the players more suited to 4-3-3 and i hope it may be the way forward another reason i was pissed we loaned out Alberto.

I cant remember 1 thing Poulsen has done well in a holding role,. My dad is a big Scim fan, and he's praying Poulsen plays. I agree that the 2 of them should never be played together,. Thats the same as the Masch and Lucas shouldnt play, but id rather the latter 2 to the former. I never said Roy would leave soon, I mean that when Roy does go,(I believe he is only here to steady the ship, and with new owners he would no longer be needed) the new manager would not want nor need Poulsen and would let him leave. We had two and only made four tackles. If we had only one and a creative player the same tackles would probably have been made anyway by the one in the defensive role. Shows why it's pretty pointless having two of them in there at once, at least against poorer quality opposition.

Stat that i read from the brum game Gerrard made only 2 passes to Torres.

I just had a look, and I'm shocked as I've calculated that 34% of his passes were unsuccessful - in otherwords one in three went astray. Furthermore, almost all forward passes into the penalty area failed to be successful. :(

I can't find anyway to confirm your stat ROCCO, but on the basis of the above I'd well believe it.

probably going of topic on this but the reason why i'd prefer lucas is poulsen is meant to be the experienced one, he's 30 and played more games than lucas, i think lucas is a better all rounder imo.

i'm not just basing this on this season, i've actually seen quite a bit of poulsen and never rated him.

I think Johnson will definitely start. Carragher and skrtel at centre back and konchesky at left back. That's his back four from last week and I'd be suprised if he changes it. He likes a settled back four and I think he'll stick with that for the next few games anyway. Fair play to anyone who gets the midfield right because I haven't got a clue. I'll hazard a guess at Gerard and merieles in the centre with jovanovic on the left and Cole playing off torres. Personally I think kuyt will be a big loss in a game like this and I think maxi might get the nod on the right.

Try the Cat & Cage in Drumcondra, it has two tellys in the bar and a big screen in the lounge, a few reds are regulars in there so I'd say they'll show it .

We are an absolute embarrasing mess. Roy Hodgson has done nothing to inject any life into the biggest bunch of sulkers in the PL. Anyone would think they had the weight of the world on their shoulders. I just don't get it why don't we just go 11 on 11 play to the max and have a bloody go. They ain't any better than us on paper! I'm going to ignore some of the last few posts, because emotions can cloud logic at times. To be honest, for 40 minutes the game was going fine. We had no cutting edge, but they had little more. Nani was being shut out at every opportunity, Scholes and Fletcher weren't given any time on the ball, and there was little service to Rooney and Berbatov.

But there was unbelievably poor defending for a routine corner. Torres may be a striker, but that doesn't excuse how badly wrong he got it. Berbatov didn't even need to jump to knock it into the net.

The problem now is what we can do. Maxi has been completely anonymous, Joe Cole is not a natural winger, and Meireles playing behind Torres just isn't working. In fact, at the moment, it looks like we're playing with three central midfielders behind a very isolated Torres.

It's hard to know what to change. Taking off Poulsen for either Babel or Jovanovic might give the team a bit more balance going forward, but it'd leave us without a natural defensive midfielder. As I said, I don't think Maxi has contributed anything wide right, so it'd be hard to justify keeping him on either.

If it stayed 0-0 at half-time I would have been quietly confident. Now I'm worried that we could concede more.
