just wonder if anyone has tried either of the above?i hate to be critical of my job but its mind numbing and highly physical and i dont think ill be there in ten years time or ill be permently fupped with my back.thinking of getting into something home study wise or evening courses and was wondering what theyre like.im open minded to what i want to do but i was thinking of something technical or the like
I'm in the same boat as yourself.Done the same old back breaking work for the past 14 years.I was only thinking about doing some kind of night class over the last few days. Will be interested to see what ideas people come up with.Either way I better do something before I'm a complete crock.
im only 26 and the back spasmed on me in work there about three weeks ago,i was lucky it was only a week off but it got me to thinking what will it be like when im 46!i do all the correct manual handling stuff its just the constant bending and lifting that does it.
I started distance learning. I do 2 days at home and 3 days in classes Its grand but you have to be motivated
Was 17 and doing a years labouring for a carpenter with the intention to doing my apprenticeship, had to do every bit of heavy lifting for him as his back was shot, he was 28...........f**ks sake in fairness, so I didn't take up the job after the year, and buggered off & got my architecture degree. Much easier number, heaviest thing I pick up these days is a paper clip.
Spot on! Thats the biggest thing. I have no idea when you studied last but it can be very hard to get back into it. Rather than potentially biting off more than you can chew I would take baby steps first. Sign up for something of interest - maybe a hobby like photography - at a local IT that will run for 6 - 10 weeks. It will get you back into being in a lecture situation. And its a short time frame with no exams. If that goes well then maybe try to do a "taster" course in a subject that you ultimately want to pursue. If that goes well you might say I like this and you can sign up for a longer certificate/diploma/degree program. The last thing you need to do is shell out big money for something you dont ultimately want to study/do. As regards format, I would imagine part time might be easier. At least then if you sign up for something and you have lectures say every Tuesday night, well then you have to build that into your schedule and get out of the house and go to it. As well as that you will have people/lecturer to talk with etc. Distance learning (And what I mean by this is 100% online) on the other hand is entirely up to you. You will get all the material online but its very easy to say "I will do it tomorrow night", and then tomorrow comes and there is a game on tv and "I will do it tomorrow night" and so it continues. Best of luck with whatever you decide to take on.
cheers for the bits of advice folks at the minute im thinking ill do a ten week web design course up in drogheda probably in the new year at this stage as the autumn courses start soon and ive to square time with work and arrange baby sitting if the wifes in work etc.dunno where it will lead after that but ill have to start somewhere
we got word yesterday in work weve lost the transport end of the contract im sure ye seen it in the news, keelings losing out to stobarts, luckily im in the warehouse so were ok for the minute but this is coming six months after we agreed a package of measures to secure the jobs so to be honest i dont hold out much hope of us staying unscathed for much longer.makes doing a course a bit more important now
