I predict a good win. I'm pretty sure the players and crowd will be extra fired up for this because of the behind the scenes talk.

Would like to see masch back in midfield along with lucas and gerrard and kewell.

COME OOOOON!

Hopefully Rafa just picks his best 11 players and forgets about whatever tactics Porto may adopt. They are coming to Anfield let them worry about stopping Liverpool not the other way round which seems to be what Rafa bases his squad on.

It should be down to Porto to try and figure out how to beat us not us set up the best way to beat them.

Like to see the same as Sat., with Momo dropping to the bench and Masch taking his place in the middle. May think about Agger coming in for Sami just to combat their pace up front on the counter-attack, no reflection on how Sami has played recently as he's been excellent.

Bring Babel on again for the last half hour, doesn't seem to play as well when he starts.

Momo dropped absolutely. Although I would be tempted to bring in Agger I think just chucking him in in such an important game when Sammi and Carra have built up an understanding again might be unwise.

You could be right there, it's a tricky one to decide when to throw him back in there. Ultimately though Agger and Carra are first choice but Rafa will have to make the decision when to throw him back into the fray. If Sami keeps his place this week I wouldn't complain.

The atmosphere should be fantastic and I reckon that the Rafaaaa Benitez chant will be on going for the duration of the match, regardless.

For me -
Reina

Finnan Carra Agger Arbeloa

Babel Gerrard Masch Kewell

Torres Crouch

Lets tear into them from the first. They are a decent team but could be fragile if we score early.

Havent posted in ages - too taken up with the rafa anti-yank tirade. I think honestly that the yanks dont give a shit about LFC hsitory and heritage - to them its just another moneymaking enterprise. They've already decided what their gonna do with rafa i reckon, irrespective of tonights result...which i think will b a comfortable win 3 or 4 nil.
The yanks took serious umbrage with rafas attack - and they aint used to that. As we've already seen with chelsea in a battle between board and manager there's only ever on winner - no matter how popular that manager may be.
I have disagreed with a lot of what rafa has done - and with some of the transfers he's brought in, but i'm fully behind him on this one. Wenger and bollox fergie have always enjoyed unconditional support from their chairmen leading to continued success - even when theyve wasted millions on rubbish players like veron, carrick, djemba djemba, kleberson, poborsky etc - they keep getting backed. If rafa goes it sets us back another 3 or 4 years in the quest for a title.
we dont play the best footie yet we're unbeaten and getting better - this is the best chance we.ve had in ages - its sporting suicide to dismiss rafa now.
I'll be shouting rafa rafa rafa for 90 mins tonite -lets get behind him on this one. I;d love if we played footie like arsenal - but id' rather win trophies - and we'll do that with rafa.

In all Liverpool have played five games against Portuguese opposition in the Champions League winning none, drawing three and losing two

Just read that on Sky Sports, think tonight will be our first win against Portugese opposition esp. with a mental atmosphere.

Without a shadow of a doubt we are going to win.The lads are not playing now for a poxy £10 million qualifying bonus.
They are playing for not only Rafas future but the history and ethos of Liverpool FC.
The closest I ever saw to this was when we were selling Rushie to Juventus and there was a petition to up his wages. To pay for this they wanted the club to raise ticket prices by 50p to pay for it.
The passion of our fans is unrivalled and our players will be driven tonight.

Just looked at the Port stats for this season in the Portugese Liga...

Home Away
Team P W D L F A W D L F A GD PTS
1 FC Porto 11 5 1 0 10 1 4 1 0 10 3 16 29

Any team going into a game on that kind of form is going to be tough. I don't think that this is a foregone conclusion, but I do think that if the crowd can raise the roof then we're in with a good chance of getting a result. Can't afford to waste any chances though.

Evening fellow red men.

Well we were bossing the game until they scored, and since then we've looked like we're on the back foot. Torres looks dangerous but I'm a bit concerned about his decision making - he always looks like he wants that extra touch and unless it's absolutely spot on, the greasy surface means he's likely to be tackled or lose control. Ray Houghton is talking his usual negative depressing ignorant s****. "Voronin has done nothing....." All I can say is that Houghton was a better player than he is a pundit.

Pretty poor display by our standards in recent weeks which is a worrying sign. However, the introduction of kewell, crouch and kuyt really got things moving for us.

suppose yeah after what went on during the week it's an important result.but lets be honest it was a pretty poor performance.some good approach play at times in the first half but no cutting edge in the final 3rd.too many long balls in the second half.it's games like this that make ya realise that we won't do anything in the prem playing like that.after a good performance on sat we really should be pushing on.it's like we play 1 good game and five poor.it really has to be the other way around if we are to do anything in the leauge.

was a bit dissapointed with the atmosphere overall.it only really got going when we scored the second.i expected it to be like that for the whole 90mins with all the talk from ppl and stuff.

Kopirish, absolutely SPOT ON.

As an ex-red he's so bloody negative about Liverpool, but that's his way in general. If you listen, when there's an analysis/replay, his comments usually focus on the things individuals/teams have done wrong rather than what a team/individual has done right to create the chance. And his voice is like the priest in Father Ted, who, by his own admission, has "An awful dreary and monotonous voice"...

We were pretty poor after they scored and were really lucky not to have gone 2-1 down just after that. How does Rafa pick Voronin, he's useless. At least he had the sense to take him off. Played better when Kewell replaced him. Babel not great, got to some good positions but didn't deliver. Think it's better to bring him on in games rather than start him at the moment.

Roll on Marseille and if we are any sort of a good team we'll beat them.

Sorry Mr B, but in my opinion, Voronin is far from useless. His movement, his workrate and his passing all mark him as a bloody useful player. Sure, he's no Fernando Torres and he'll not score 20 goals a season, but he retains posession well and he puts defenders under pressure which helps us to get the ball back.

The one thing last nights game proved beyond a doubt is when fit Torres has to play, no resting, no 'his game doesnt suit the opposition' lark.

Along with Drogba, the balarina Ronaldo and Fabragas he is one of the 4 players who can turn a game against any opposition and are in a different league to whats around them, and I include Stevie in that statement. Unlike the others though who took a season to settle Torres has this the ground running despite getting used the the physical nature of the english game and the language.

How good this guy will be next season when he is fully settled in is a scary prospect. Forget the 20 goal a season striker, if Torres is let play as many matches as he wants to hes a 30+ a season striker no question.

Babel IS right footed (and only 20 don;t forget). Arbeloa has been one of our best players this season so I have to disagree there and as for Crouch, I feel a bit osrry for him, but I think one of the reasons is that when he plays, our back 4 invariably resort to launching the ball up to him and not trying to create from the back.
Tbh, as long as we continue winning I don't really give a toss

We were playing against a good Porto side who are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season if im not mistaken , before kick off all the "experts" were saying we could easily slip up and draw or loose .

Granted it wasn't fluid at times and we played better on Saturday, we're not going to playing brilliant football every game.
Show me a team that does?

I have to disagree about them.I might not always agree with them but they are a hell of a lot better than the ITV pundits who beat around the bush for fear of offending there golfing buddies.Everything is so nicey nice.
As for Crouch. It makes me laugh about the so called advantage in his height and how it frightens defenders and manager. His heading is his weakest part of his game.He has no power whatsoever. The best example of this is the goal he scored for england last week.A great finish but 99% of forwards would have headed that ball and it was by far the easier option. His ball control on the ground, while awkward looking, is excellent.

The difference between RTE and Sky can be seen with Souness, when he is on RTE he has no problem slagging of any of the english teams and speaks his mind. The off he goes to Sky and he becomes one of the 'must not say anything controversial' schills.

I remember when he was on the RTE panel for the first England world cup game and Bill asked him his thoughts and he gave the Sky version should do well etc, and then Brady, Dumphy and Giles tore England to shreds crap, rubbish, no hope etc., you could almost see the shock on Souness face that right, wrong, full of shite or not RTE let everyone say what they want to.

Basically they are like a bunch of lads watching a game at a table down the local, which in my opinion is far more entertaining.

what i find funny is this thread pops up after almost every liverpool game as if people are shocked about what they will say. i watch it coz it makes me laugh, not in a million years would they get me angry with a comment coz that is their game to try spark controversy. Its good entertainment in my opinion

Got back yesterday so this is the first chance to comment...
What a good result! Was a very tense atmosphere in the second half before the flurry of goals.
Torres was sheer magic. Even when he didnt have the ball, he was chasing and hassling... even at that price it was a bargain.
Harry and Crouchie made a big difference to the game - having harry back is like a new signing - looks really confident and likes taking players on! :D
Only minus notes for me were Voronins performance (whos touch was horrendous) and the lack of width until kewell came on...
masch had a good game, and stevie was ok (why did he not let torres go for the hat-trick?)
apart from the goal and the other dangerous break away i thought the defence coped well enough - arbeloa and finnan were very good going forward (i know arbeloa should have done better for the goal but where was sami?)
looking forward to the marseillle game- i think well win possible by 2 or more...
good show of support for rafa too...

It was just 2-1 at the time they got the peno, Stevie stepped up to finish off the job and put it out of Porto's reach. They had tried to set up Torres after that but unluckily he didnt get the hat-trick. What a player, and still just a chap.

Still a bit nervous with Stevie taking peno's. How I'd love to see someone as good as Danny Murphy taking spot kicks for us.
