Convicted rapist Larry Murphy is expected to be released from Dublin’s Arbour Hill Prison today after serving 10½ years of a 15-year jail term, one year of which was suspended.

Speaking yesterday, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern repeated an earlier assertion that he is not in a position to stop the release as Murphy was entitled to 25 per cent off his sentence as a matter of law.

“There is no early release of serious sex offenders, all these type of offenders serve the full sentence that was provided for by the court,†Mr Ahern said. The courts were aware of the remission rates when passing sentence and any suggestion he could intervene in a case to cancel remission was “absolutely nonsenseâ€.

Currently a minister for justice can only sanction or refuse the release of a criminal serving a life sentence. Mr Ahern said that while he cannot extend sentences for sex offenders, he said there were "constant discussions" over the relase of such prisoners to ensure that they were rehabilitated in such a way that they do not pose a danger to the public.

Constant discussions?? That will make whoever ends up living beside him a whole lot safer:rolleyes:

The Media can do some good in cases like this by high profile reporting on him - that way everyone knows his face and will know if he is living in your area.

People like this are pure scum. His guy had no remorse for what he did. Absoloute pure and utter scum. I bet he is a Manc too.

This is a disgrace letting him out!

He has 7 days to find an address and notify gardai and if after 7 days (assuming he hasnt left the country on his newly and legally attained passport and driving license) he can give his address as "no fixed abode"

In other words, he never legally has to declare where he is at any one time

He just has to sign on at garda station every seven days.....there is alot you can do in 6 days and can get quite far!

    Thats not corrrect.

Under the provisions of the Sex Offenders Act, released sex offenders must inform gardaí where they plan to reside within seven days of their release. They must also notify gardaí of any change of address.

In the event they decide to relocate overseas, which they are entitled to and which Larry Murphy is expected to, they must inform gardaí of their address in that jurisdiction. Gardaí then inform the police service of that country.

Any failure on the part of the offender to comply with these measures is a criminal offence.

not according to the gardai who were at pains to point out last week that he was never questioned in a serious way about the 3 missing girls.
I cant understand why he doesnt have to check into a garda station for 7 days, seems insane to me.

Well there hasn't been any more women gone missing since he was locked up and that usually means the killer is dead or incarcerated. The Guards brought over FBI profilers and they said Murphy was a likely suspect since he knew the area well and was minutes away from killing that woman in the same area. I'm not saying he did it but he is defo a suspect imo.

Id be very suprised if this fella lasts long on the out side..Was reading on a facebook page last night, the messages and comments that were been put up,and alot of them sound like they mean business..

The women of Carlow, will need to be on high alert, with this fcuker around..I heard some where that he was linked with some of the missing girls who have never been found too, and he was the last person to see some of them...

i cant be the only one distrubed by the media reports this morning can i?Its like they want him to reoffend as soon as he gets out.Very weird situation.

I also find a lot of the facebook comments and people saying what they would do to hi etc also troubling.

Maybe its just me.The guy is clearly a fcuking scumbag but the news reporting today just feels odd.

as were about twenty other people, including 2 other carpenters not from newbridge who were working in swifts bar/niteclub when deidre jacob went missing.
The argument that no one died/went missing since he has gone to jail is an easy one to make, but its almost too easy.Im from Moone/Timolin and left there to move to newbridge. The spot that JO JO Dollard went missing from at 11.30 at night is one of the most deserted and dreary places you could be late at night and simply put anyone could have done anything up there without a single person noticing.

None of us here will ever know if he did and we all have our suspicions, the news coverage just bothered me.
