Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has admitted he is interested in signing Juventus' Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen.
The Reds have been strongly linked with a move for Poulsen as they consider replacements for wantaway midfielder Javier Mascherano.
Juventus are thought to be willing to let Poulsen move on as he is currently down the pecking order in new coach Luigi Del Neri'splans.
Hodgson is a big fan of Poulsen having worked with him during his time in charge of FC Copenhagen and he feels he would be a valuable addition to his squad at Anfield.
"If we can sign him from Juventus at a price I consider reasonable, he will be a very good player to bring into our team," Hodgson told Ekstra Bladet.
"Christian is a player I know well, a player whose career I actually kick-started many years ago and I have followed him closely ever since."

I always try and look for the positives in players we sign but in this case all I can think of is that he can fill in at right back.
Slow, old, always giving away cheap free kicks and getting booked. Not a particularly good passer.Roy seems to love him though and Juve don't want him so I knew it was only a matter if time.

If u just remove the old (and in masch's case prob the slow) that describes lucas most of the time and masch a lot of the time. poulsen ould only cost 5-6m tops and is very experienced at his job - i still think he'll have to get a top class ball-playing midfielder (i just dont think aquaman is up to it but thats just my opinion) like martinez, defour, banega or even steven ireland ie guys who can actually pass the ball and see a pass early. it doesnt matter who we get in defence or in attack, if the midfield even partially resembles the shamboic crap form last season we'll be lucky to get top7

That describes the opposite of Lucas. This cheap free kicks bollox is a myth-he totally cut that out of his game last year.He had one of the highest tackle completion ratio's in the league and conceded less free kicks than Masch who is one of the best tacklers in the game. He's also younger, quicker and a better passer than Poulsen and Lucas isn't even a holding midfielder in the first place. But hey,any excuse for a pop at an easy target I spose.

Careful now...or u mite be accused of 'any excuse to have a pop at an easy target'. Lucas is an excellent quick passer, doesnt give away silly fouls (just a myth) and puts in more successful tackles than anyone in the prem....apparently. just refer to the opta stats, they never lie.
i reckon ray wilkins wouldve scored off the charts on pass completion rate if he was playing today.
anyway, poulsen is ok but wouldnt be my number1 target, altho he was reasonably good at seville i seem to remember the few times i saw him but thats a while back. i agree with irishlad, flamini is younger and knows the prem and would be a better option i reckon

This doesn't inspire confidence of an immenent takeover or as a worthy replacement for Masch to say the least. Has to be better out there in this position surely.

I agree but we just dont know how much of the masch money he's actually gonna get to replace him once he's gone. I'd prefer martinez who will prob stay in spain but maybe he thinks a midfield of poulsen/aquaman or poulsen/gerrard will do the job in the prem and maybe buy another striker or top wide playr if the money is available.
suffice it to say i wouldnt be ecstatic with the signing cos i think our midfield was so poor in terms of ball retention and creativity last season, that if it continued this coming season i couldnt see a major climb up the table, irrespective of torres' fitness or who we play left back or out wide. Still not sure if its actually a nailed on certainty

I never bigged Insua up into a better player than he is though,I merely pointed out that people were going way over the top in their criticism of a young player and used the fact that he's played for Liverpool and Argentina to highlight the fact that he's not the horrendous footballer people were making him out to be.On the other hand I don't think Poulsen or Degen are horrendous footballers either.Just not good enough for Liverpool,Stuttgart or Juve.

I would rather Flamini but cannot see that one happening either.
Roy put Poulsen as one to watch in this years World Cup in his role as pundit. Personally, I haven't seen much of him but like I always say, it is the easiest position on a pitch to play. Destructive rather than constructive.
Mascherano was asked to play the role Alonso played for us last year, but could not live up to the task. Too many side passes. Nothing of note. Nothing to make a defender turn and face his own goal. This is Mascherano's downfall. If it comes to it, let Lucas play there.
The transfer priority for me however remains up front. Maybe he wants to play Babel up there. His natural position for me...

To be honest it was just a joke, I wasn't fishing for an argument. Someone mentioned Flamini above, that would be a great signing. He was brilliant in his last season in the PL. Although if we are signing a midfield player there is only one I have been mentioning all summer, Ireland!

Fair enough,I apologise:)I think Ireland is a cracking player although a lot of people don't seem to rate him but he's not what we should be aiming for imo as we have plenty of creative midfielders in Aqua,Stevie and Cole.I think we need someone who plays deeper than Ireland and is a good tackler.Flamini would be the business in that he can break up play but can actually play a bit himself!Has premier league experience, good age, realistic, can play left back...

Only 14 starts for Milan last season , id say they would be open to letting him go at a reasonable price.

Have to say I do not know much at all about this lad but have heard cold review so far from reds fans. He is a holding midfielder who is quite slow I gather. I have no problem with that if he is aware and has a good positional sense, Hamann for example, slow as fook but one of the very best in that role. Pace isnt a neccesity if he can be clever. As i say i do not know much of this fella, but im taking from the comments, many people think he's not up to it.
WOuld that be true?

young, poulsen, konchesky, figeroa etc are the type of signings that ex liverpool managers got slated for. solid 5/6 outta 10 players. being honest the type of players that fulham should be linked with.
young, konchesky and poulsen pushing 30 or not far off it and none of them the paciest players.
the players Roy has wanted to splash the cash on have been very ordinary. great pulling of cole freebie but the rest of players linked with us haven't inspired confidence.
and before anyone starts moaning oh don't be all negative give them a chance, they wil be given a chance but fans are entitled to give their opinions on potenial signings too

I’ve always liked Poulsen from his time at Schalke, Sevilla and Internationally. He’s a leader of men and (was) a top tier defensive midfielder before his move to Juve.
Admittedly his time in Italy hasn’t gone well partly due to his form but also coupled with the performances of Sissoko, the narrow role of Camoranesi and Marchiso’s development but I would still be quite content to see him come in as Mascherano’s replacement (on proviso that the left over funds don’t just vanish).
With Aquilani hopefully more frequently available this season and Shelvey’s potential I think Poulsen and Lucas (irrespective of whether it’s his natural role) would be well equipped to share the job of DM or Destoyer.

Would much prefer to see Flamini sign for us rather than Poulsen. From what ive seen of the lad hes a very average player and not good enough for LFC. Bit worried Roy thinks he is good enough just because he was a good player for him in the Danish league. More of a fulham type signing than a liverpool one.

Christian Poulsen's agent has opened negotiations with Liverpool but is not sure if an agreement will be reached.
Poulsen has emerged as a transfer target for the Reds this summer, with Roy Hodgson confirming his interest in the Juventus midfielder this week.
Liverpool have spoken to Poulsen's representative Joern Bonnesen and are reported to have offered a three-year deal.
However, it does not look like anything will be finalised in the near future after Bonnesen returned to Denmark.
"I don't know if we will reach an agreement," the agent told Tipsbladet.
"I will go home without a contract and we will work from there.
"This is not something which will be resolved in two minutes."

Christian Poulsen's agent has revealed he expects the Denmark international to complete his move to Liverpool next week.
The Reds are thought to have targeted a move for Juventus midfielder Poulsen as a direct replacement for wantaway star Javier Mascherano.
Juve are believed to be willing to offload Poulsen as he does not figure in new coach Luigi Del Neri's long-term plans.
Anfield boss Roy Hodgson is a big admirer of Poulsen and confirmed his interest in the defensive midfielder earlier this week.
Poulsen's represetative, Jorn Bonnesen, has held talks with Liverpool over a possible deal and he is confident the move could be wrapped up next week.
"It won't take more than a week before this is sorted out." Bonnesen told Ekstra Bladet.
"It might be already in the beginning of next week. Christian Poulsen is Roy's man.
"He will be playing as defensive midfielder at Liverpool. I returned home with a good and positive impression."

At least we are doing this before Masch leaves. If we get £20M + for Masch then any player we go out to buy afterwards will have a few extra million added to his price tag!
I know YouTube made Voronin look good but from what I've seen of Poulsen on it he is well able to put it about. There aren't too many that stand up to Gattuso's aggression!

Disciplinary controversy
Poulsen had a controversial role against Italy in the group stage of the 2004 European Championship. Following the 0–0 draw with Italy, Danish television showed Poulsen being spat on by Italian playmaker Francesco Totti. Totti received a three-match ban and gave a "full public apology", though still claiming he was provoked by Poulsen.[9] Italy were subsequently eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.
In the 2005–06 Champions League tournament, Poulsen's club Schalke played two games against Italian team A.C. Milan. Following their first match, a 2–2 draw, Poulsen was described as "a coward" by Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti,[10] alleging that Poulsen physically kicked Milan's Brazilian playmaker Kaká when the officials had their backs turned. In the second match Schalke lost 2–3, despite a goal by Poulsen. Following the final whistle, Italian player Gennaro Gattuso steered towards Poulsen and confronted him.[11] Gattuso made gloating taunts, while Poulsen gave him an ironic thumbs up, afterwards declaring he found Gattuso childish and hoped he felt embarrassed for himself.[12]
[edit] The Rosenberg punch
See also: UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier fan attack
On June 2, 2007, Poulsen played for Denmark against Sweden in a qualifying match for the 2008 European Championship tournament. With the game tied 3–3 in the 89th minute, Poulsen punched Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg in the stomach inside the Danish penalty area.[13] The linesman notified referee Herbert Fandel, who gave Poulsen the red card and awarded Sweden a penalty kick.[13] An angered Danish supporter ran onto the pitch and attempted to attack Fandel, who chose to abandon the game which was subsequently awarded a 3–0 win to Sweden.[13] Poulsen made a public apology for his actions, while saying they were a result of Rosenberg's provocations.[13] He accepted UEFA's punishment of suspension from Denmark's next three competitive games.[14]
In the aftermath of the game, a football fan pressed charges against Poulsen for the attack on Rosenberg.[15] A member of the Copenhagen metropolitan police called for a 30 day jail sentence,[15] and Danish Minister of Justice Lene Espersen called for Poulsen's exclusion from the national team.[16] The case was eventually dismissed on June 18,[17] and national team coach Morten Olsen re-called Poulsen for the national team at the end of his suspension in October 2007.[7]

We spent 15/20 million last year on an injury prone central midfielder. I am/was a Rafa man, however I thought it was a bonkers decision at the time and it was a gamble that back fired.
This Poulsen guy will not set the world alight, however I think himself and Lucas between them can play alongside Stevie in the middle. Both will be steady with Stevie, Cole and the wingers (Jova, Kuyt, Maxi, Pacheco) left to do the creating.
I hope though we dont see too much of Poulsen and Lucas in the same side if he is indeed signed.

Amazing how many people have suddenly become an expert on European football and Poulsen. Some of these experts know so much they think he's Swedish!
He's a player Roy knows well, trusts and has a good relationship with. He obviously feels he knows how to get the best out of him. He suffered a dip in form at Juve and that can happen to players at certain clubs. Need I remind ye that we took Masch from West Ham reserves? Why all this "I'd prefer Lucas" nonsense? Why is Lucas going anywhere? We have a marathon of a season and need to bolster squad with experience as well as youth if we want to progress in Europe. I think he'll be a decent signing under a manager who has proven record of getting the best out of underperforming players.

Dont see the problem with Poulsen if he comes , im not interested in his temperment, Masch stayed on the pitch many times just becaUse he wore out jersey and not Boltons (as has Gerrard for that matter) the one thing Roy showed at Fulham is he knew how to pick players most though were past their best, Murphy and Duff for example and re-focus them. Everyone knows that Masch is one of the best in his postion but his position is breaking up play pure and simple, not attacking, not defending, not passing, not shooting, just simple getting in the way and breaking up attacks.
If Roy thinks he can give new lease of life to a midfielder of quality that has lost his way I have no reason to doubt him.

Thats complete nonsense... Mash is a destroyer, yes.... but he is in the top bracket of players in this position.
Mash no only breaks up attacks, but he does what Roy Keane did at the scum... passes the ball 5 yards, does the job for our full backs when out of position and is also capable of starting attacks with his midfield dominance.

Daniel Agger insists Christian Poulsen will be "a perfect addition" ahead of his potential move to Liverpool.
The Denmark defender is excited at the prospect of linking up with international team-mate Poulsen, who is edging nearer to a switch to the Merseyside giants.
The Juventus midfielder has been given permission to withdraw from Denmark's friendly against Germany, so he can tie up a three-year deal at Anfield and work under Reds boss Roy Hodgson, who first signed the player for FC Copenhagen in 2000.
And after winning championships in his homeland and in Italy, as well as lifting the Uefa Cup with Sevilla, Agger believes the 30-year-old has all the characteristics to be a success at Liverpool.
"Christian would be a perfect addition to most of the big clubs in Europe, so he will certainly fit in here," Agger told the Liverpool Echo.
"He is a top player and will make us stronger. We need to have big signings so we can compete and he is one of those players.
"Christian will improve the team. But we need more improvements if we want to be at the top of the league this season."
Agger, who has recovered from the back injury which kept him out of last week's Europa League victory over Rabotnicki, accepts Poulsen will need time to adapt to the speed of the Premier League after several years in the slower-paced Serie A.
However, he feels his compatriot will be the ideal replacement for Javier Mascherano, whose days at Anfield appear numbered after he asked Hodgson for a transfer.
"Maybe he will find the pace of here a bit of a culture shock; he will have to get used to the extra high tempo," added Agger, who could feature at left-back for Liverpool's league opener against Arsenal.
"He has played in Italy, Spain and Germany and done very well, so I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be a success with Liverpool.
"We have Mascherano but it looks like he is leaving so there is a gap there."

i agree wit the poster about masch been only a destroyer his passing was atricious but he was lightning quick which helped us on the counter attack i said when alonso left that u could replace mascherno for half of wat u would need to find another alonso players can be moulded to play like mashcerno stopping attacks hittin simple passes running wit the ball but u cant mould a ball player u either have it or u dont.
Poulson would be delighted to seem here great engine very firey and passionate will suit us down to the ground will also be able bring lucas on that extra yard in consistance also the fact he has played left back before is a bonus. i see him as the ultimate squad man and from wat u read he is also the consumite professional getting involved in helping youngsters improve there game. a touch of maurice pelligarino about this something to help ppl settle but ultimatly i am 90 per cent sure he will be a success but none my luck he will score an own goal and get sent off against the arse anywho when u come christian welcome and best of luck :D

Jeez, I remember when this happened ... it was mental.
In the aftermath of the game, a football fan pressed charges against Poulsen for the attack on Rosenberg.[15] A member of the Copenhagen metropolitan police called for a 30 day jail sentence,[15] and Danish Minister of Justice Lene Espersen called for Poulsen's exclusion from the national team.[16] The case was eventually dismissed on June 18,[17] and national team coach Morten Olsen re-called Poulsen for the national team at the end of his suspension in October 2007

With the money spent and the potential money to be brought in from Masch's sale if it goes ahead, wonder how much will be made available to spend on a striker after...

Seems the fee with Juve has only been agreed. But Id say its a 2-3 year deal. Cant see him getting much more than that

Underwhelmed. If he's brought in as experienced cover I can live with that but if Roy's signed him with a view to starting every week then we could be in trouble.

Talking to bloke yesterday who follows Juventus , and he thinks we have a got a great signing on our hands for £4.5m ..
His view ..
Very good tackler , very good passer , Excellent reading the game and positional play ... hot headed at times but has calmed down recently , wont back down to any player , 100% commitment every game and thinks premier league will suit him and expects him to settle in very quickly.
Not as good as Masch or Alonso on their day he said but a decent signing and more of a mix of both players than just a replacement for Masch ..

odd then that Juve see him as surplus to requirments and most people who folow european football have said he has been awful since he left seville.

I haven't got a what he is like ..... only passing what i was told.
Time will tell.
Christian Poulsen admits he is still feeling his way into the hectic pace of his career at Liverpool.
The Denmark international was signed from Juventus in the summer transfer window and made his Premier League debut in last Sunday's victory over West Brom.
Featuring against the Baggies gave Poulsen, who was involved in the two-legged Europa League play-off against Trabzonspor, a first taste of playing in the same team as star duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
While he enjoyed the experience, the midfielder recognises that he still needs time to gel with captain Gerrard and striker Torres.
"I feel comfortable here. The match against West Brom was the first game with Fernando and the captain so you have to learn how they want the ball," said Poulsen.
"Fernando is a strong player and can do things at speed and can do things one against one.
Frantic
"You also feel Steven and Fernando have a good eye for each other and you saw that against West Brom - I hope it will get even better."
Poulsen believes the frantic fixture list of domestic and European commitments facing Liverpool will help his development.
"When I came here I had not played since the World Cup so I feel I need some time to get into the rhythm," added the 30-year-old.
"But last Thursday (in the second leg against Trabzonspor) I did better than in the first game.
"We have a lot of games so with Javier Mascherano and Alberto Aquilani leaving we need quality players for the team because for the next six months we will have a game every four days.
"It is important for a club who wants to play at the top of the Premier League and fighting for the Europa League to have strong players.
"I hope after the international break we can come strong again and pick up a lot of points up in the coming months."
