Liverpool plot shock move for Aston Villa's Stiliyan Petrov - Exclusive

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson wants Aston Villa midfield general Stiliyan Petrov as the shock replacement for transfer-seeking Javier Mascherano.

Hodgson admires the Bulgarian star's style and is ready to pay around £7 million for him as he looks to cash in on Argentinian Mascherano by selling him to Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez.

The Kop are looking to land both Petrov and right back Luke Young in a surprise double raid as they try to bring in seasons professionals for a demanding campaign.

Petrov, 30, is one of the Premier League's most respect operators and a key man for Martin O'Neill who brought him to Villa from Celtic where he was also a legend.

The Bulgarian star is aware of the Liverpool interest and could be keen on a move to Anfield - although Villa are desperate to keep their squad together despite so many being wanted men.

Hodgson wants a proven midfield schemer to play an anchor role in the Liverpool side. He expects Mascherano to move on, which would leave just Brazilian Lucas Leiva for that position - with Xabi Alonso never properly replaced.

Petrov may not seem the most charismatic capture, but he is in the right mould for Hodgson who plans to put his own well-drilled imprint on the Anfield side this season and beyond.

Where did this come from! Would not see the point in this at all.
Why aren't we just raiding City to get some decent players in!!!

A replacement for Masch who has 2 goals in 3 seasons for us with a player who has a similiar role who has what 3 maybe 4 goals in his Villa locker this ain't a good move imo.

West Ham United have rejected a bid from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Scott Parker.

The England international was the Hammers' standout performer last season, with a collection of commanding displays helping the club steer clear of relegation.

His efforts were rewarded with a place in England's pre-World Cup squad, although he failed to make the cut for the South African showpiece.

He was expected to generate interest this summer, with numerous clubs reported to be keen to bring him on board.

Tottenham have made no secret of their desire to strengthen, as they prepare for life in the UEFA Champions League, and they are the first to have made an official approach.
    Promise

They have, however, been knocked back by West Ham, with co-owner David Sullivan making it clear that Parker is not for sale at any price.

"I made a promise that I would not sell Scott and I will not, for any amount of money, break that promise to the West Ham supporters," he told the club's official website.

"Scott is not for sale at any price, to anyone. West Ham supporters, for too long, have had owners that sell their best players and promise one thing and do another.

"This is a new era. We are building a bigger, better West Ham and when we make a promise, we honour it."

Sullivan added: "The club informed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy prior to him making the offer that we would not welcome any approach to unsettle the player.

"Scott Parker has three years left on his contract and the club has opened talks with his agent over a new five-year deal."

    £7m I think.

Can't see MON letting Petrov and Milner both go from his midfield and Milner is most likely to leave so I can't really see Petrov coming to us.

have we actually signed him? People are very quick to assume anything in the press is gospel. Don't think he would set the world alight although having seen him live once or twice I always thought he was a good player. Not the sort of player to turn us into title winners, whoever would fill out a weak squad.

Petrov would be good back up at best IMO.I much prefer the sound of muntari plus cash in an exchange for mascherano. There was talks of 12.5 million plus muntari for masch. That's a great bit of business I think.

wooo first post :) on the topic of petrov i think i am the only one that sees him as an apt replacment for mascherno he has a great delivery impecable timing and has character correct me if i am wrong but does he not skipper aston villa and mon has very rarly got it wrong in that department he maybe old but his mind is exceptional sharp and tat evident wit his assists over the last two seasons personally if i wanted a replacment toulon of lyon would be my vote young quick puts himself about

A more modern day Craig Burley, great in Scotland, not so good in England. No thanks

That said, I doubt there's any truth in it what so ever.
