Roy Hodgson today confirmed that full-back Philipp Degen can look for a new club.

The Swiss international has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008.

"We have had an amicable conversation with Philipp and he wants to play football," Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We won't stand in his way and he is free to look for another club."

I thought he looked a decent player when he played, he wasn't afraid to get up the wings and had the ability to cross but was always injured, if we get some money for him or free up the wage bill maybe we can get someone in.
Do you get the feeling that Roy knew way before he was Officialy signed that he knew he was comin to LFC as he seems to know very quickly who he wants and who he wants rid of too

Delighted with this news. Thanks be to christ I'll never have to look at him at him in a Liverpool shirt again.

    Absolute woeful defender.

Jesus this is the best week since Istanbul. Signed Cole, Gerrard staying, Insua and Degen going.

All that is left now is Torres and I'm a lot more hopeful on that one that I was a few weeks ago.

    Well chuffed now.:D:D:D

No, I think it's a sign of the finances more than anything, I'd say he was given a brief to say the more you can clear off the wage bill and money you can get in from sales, the more we can talk about bringing other players in. So far the clearance is going well, but once again we're going to be talking strength in depth will be the problem. Let's hope our first teamers stay fit because it looks like there won't be many squad players between first team and reserves. Some of the young fellas will have to be given a chance, something a lot of people were crying out for. I just hope the fans give them a chance to develop and not get the "he's not good enough to wear the shirt" crap three games into their career...

IF Kelly becomes the player I think he can become I would like to try setting up with him at RB and push Glen on a bit in some games this season, Glen would provide cover for the young lad(and help his progression) while still offering a threat going forward.

He was just standing in the way of Kelly progressing anyway.

LUCAS?????? I dont see why we need to get rid of Lucas. If the Monster follows rafa to Inter we will be very short in the middle of the park. With the 6/8m being quoted I cant see us signing a player as good as Lucas. He has got better every season....give the lad a chance.

I've actually had my suspicions on this over the last few weeks too. Judging by the appointments of the previous 2 managers and details that that have since emerged, Rafa was first approached and in discussions with the club in March before he signed in July that year and according to Houllier he was approached the summer before he was appointed in 98. Now I know it was a different regime but it shows you these negotiations happen a long time before we know about them. Obviously Roy wouldnt have been told that he had 100% been given the job as there was others to interview but i'm sure he was told he was out in front and to make a few plans on which players he did and didnt want.
Very impressed with Roy and his way of dealing with issues. He's put everyones feet back on the ground today after a brilliant 2 days by dampening down the expectation levels of fans and also raising the ownership issue again. Also said that he had extensive discussions with Joe Cole whereas a few days ago he made it sound like he just passed him on the street and said hello! I think he knew all along that Stevie was staying and more than likely Nando. He's going back to the classic Liverpool way of doing your business behind closed doors and when the time is right people will informed. Wouldnt be surprised if him and Masch are texting every night before he goes to bed;)

Another one bites the dust...Degen was ok going forward, but when it came to the final ball it was terrible to watch..I just hope with all this dead wood we are flogging that some replacements will be brought in, whether it be back up from the reserves or other players..

Wonder how much we will fetch for him, and how will sign him...

LMAO :D :D :D .... I hope so mate, would be great if Mascherano was definitely staying, needless to say.

I'm not 100% sure he knew the job was his a while back, but no doubt he had a view on many of our players, lets face it, if we all do and we don't work in the Premiership, surely the managers of opposition teams must have a view on them.

    Anyway, getting back to Degen....

I always liked him going forward, but thought he was a poor defender. He's had an opportunity to impress and sadly, has not broken into the first eleven, so it's time for him to move on. My feeling is LFC would almost release him on a free, to let him away ... despite the fact that on paper, he's probably still got a transfer fee over his head.

Best wishes to him, he's just not what we need at LFC.

That's an interesting one. There was a stage when the negotiations were going on that if Capello got the heave ho that appearently he had a great chance of the England job and that kind of dragged on a little bit so I suppose he was in the frame for at least a Month before he joined and I'd say he knew before most people that Rafa was going to Inter so yeah I suppose he's had plenty of time before he joined to think over decisions.

It's interesting because Rafa was always complaining that Liverpool were too slow making moves !!! I remember him blaming Parry. If he keeps going at this rate all the crap players will be gone which would be great and he can play a few youngfellows.

As regards the players. I'd say the dogs on the streets know that there is some desperate deadwood at the Pool but Christ so far so good. :D

    Degen - going
    Insua - going
    El Zhar - going

All woeful players in terms of Liverpool imo.

Degen when he played looked good, just pity he didn't play that much, Last season he had a good run off 4/5 games where he performed well. Thought he still be a good backup but if he wants firstteam football he would have to move.

Is he gone or just allowed leave? If he is still here nobody is going to pay for him so it will probably cost us 0.5m to be shot of the waste of space. Pound for pound the biggest waste of club funds in our history (apart from that expensive shovel we got in B&Q and a few other $ transactions).
