Rangers' Danny Wilson to complete Liverpool transfer
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/8669988.stm?
Wilson was a key part of Rangers' league-winning season
By Alasdair Lamont
Defender Danny Wilson is expected to agree a move from Rangers to Liverpool in the next seven days.
The 18-year-old has just over a year left on his contract and had turned down the new deal on offer to him.
Liverpool had a previous bid turned down but have returned with an improved offer in the region of £2m plus add-ons that Rangers have deemed acceptable.
The Ibrox club stood to lose the player for around £500,000 in compensation had he not been sold this summer.
Wilson, who made his debut in October, was recently voted PFA Scotland young player of the year, having made over 20 appearances - two in the Champions League - and scored once this season.
Injury ended his campaign prematurely, but he will leave Ibrox with winners' medals from Rangers' Scottish Premier League and Co-operative Insurance Cup triumphs.

Don't know much about the lad but he's obviously highly regarded so hopefully he'll hit the ground running. I just hope people who had planned to boycott anything that puts money into the yanks pockets aren't wavering. I'm delighted we're strenghtening the squad but as it's been said on here plenty of times before, players come and go. The most important thing is the club and the yanks going and personally I think hitting them in the pocket is still the quickest way to make sure that happens.

I've seen plenty of Danny Wilson in the SPL this season and I have real high hopes for him, he looks a very composed defender. He came in as injury cover for Bougherra but it quickly became evident that he wasn't going to lose his place in the side, he very quickly looked comfortable in the role and ended up playing about 25 games in all competitions.
However, do not expect him to be a solution to our left back issue. He is very much a centre back, he played alongside Davie Weir in the centre of Rangers' defence and though he is left footed, I would liken it to playing Agger at left back. I would imagine that, if this signing does go through, it would signal the end of Kyrgiakos' Liverpool career rather than be one of our two left back slots filled.

Rangers defender Wilson in talks with Liverpool
Danny Wilson is not travelling to Australia with the Rangers squad and has instead headed to Liverpool for signing talks.
Rangers arrived at Glasgow Airport on Thursday afternoon to fly out to Australia but teenage defender Danny Wilson was not in the travelling party. STV Sport has learned that the player has travelled to Liverpool and a transfer to the Anfield club is expected to be concluded shortly.
The deal could be concluded in time for Wilson to fly out to Switzerland for the English Premier League side’s friendly against Grasshopper Zurich on Wednesday night. The match, which will be Roy Hodgson’s first in charge of the Reds, may even see Wilson make his first appearance for the club alongside Joe Cole, who is expected to make his debut after joining the club no a free transfer.
Liverpool failed with a £2 million bid for Wilson earlier this year and are believed to have rejected two offers in January but Rangers manager Walter Smith admitted in May that he expected the club to return with an improved offer. The clubs now appear to have reached an agreement and Smith left the player out of the squad for the trip down under.
Wilson has one year remaining on his contract but, although he would be free to move at the end of that deal, Rangers would be due compensation. Under rules covering the development of players, that compensation is likely to be in the region of £650,000 and a transfer fee significantly higher than that fee would be difficult for the Ibrox club to turn down with the player having rejected a new contract offer.
Wilson broke through into the Rangers first team last season and put in a series of impressive performance, making his Champions League debut and forming an assured defensive partnership with David Weir. Filling in for Madjid Bougherra when the Algerian international was injured, Wilson caught the eye as one of the outstanding prospects in Scottish football and was named as the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year.
Should the transfer be finalised, Wilson would be the sixth player to leave Ibrox since the season ended.

Yeah,I went on a Rangers forum when we were linked with him a while back to see what they had to say about him and they were all calling him a fenian b@stard etc for wanting out!Anyway, good signing. We look very well covered at CB even if Soto does leave.Wouldn't be surprised if we only bring in one recognised left back now and use Agger and Wilson when needs be.

I say this has already happened just not been confirmed by LFC. I am sure I heard yesterday that Cole had signed and tomorrow was the deadline for the Europa League so I say LFC would want Wilson in that squad so he can play the 2 qualifiers. I may be wrong but I say this transfer will be confirmed this evening by the club.

Very interesting point that I had not thought about.
23 July 2010 (24.00 CET) for all matches in the third qualifying round;
9 August 2010 (24.00 CET) for all matches in the play-off round;
1st September 2010 (24.00 CET) for all further matches from the first
match in the group stage up to and including the final.
For the three qualifying rounds and the play-offs, after the above-mentioned
qualifying dates, one player on List A may be changed until 24.00 CET on
the day before the relevant first-leg match, provided that the club’s national
association confirms in writing that the new player is eligible to play at
domestic level at this time.
Changes can be made again for the round of 32 but won't worry about that yet.

23rd July, I thought it was today 20th July when they said Joe Cole was signed with the deadline tomorrow so that means another day or 2 yet left to get a striker in to play in the qualifiers in the europa league. Cole and Wilson will be eligable. He may be happy to play Ngog up front for the 2 qualifiers but if not there may well be movement on a new striker in the next 48 hours.

Wouldn't necessarily agree with you there. Ok they already have 4 but Agger is injury prone and Carra and Soto are pushing on so they badly need a new a new centre back. I reckon after last Year Soto has a fighting chance, same as the rest of them. Who are the first choice centre backs anyway ? Rafa was always changing them.
If they had the money they should probably buy a Top class CB in his early 20's but they don't, so this fellow is more in the price range.
You generally wouldn't be playing youngfellows CB unless they are exceptional or you have no other choice.

DELIGHTED Danny Wilson admitted he lived the dream last night after capping his Scotland debut with a goal against the Faroe Islands at Pittodrie.
The Liverpool kid set Craig Levein's side on their way to a 3-0 friendly win, with Jamie Mackie and Kris Commons also scoring their first goals in dark blue.
It was Scotland's biggest victory since a 6-0 thumping of the Faroes four years ago and a confidence booster for the rest of the Euro 2012 campaign.
Wilson, 18, became the eighth youngest scorer for his country when he volleyed home Charlie Adam's corner.
And the former Rangers youngster insisted it was the biggest high of his short career.
He said: "It was an incredible night for me. It couldn't have gone any better.
"I didn't even expect to start let alone score on my debut. It was beyond my wildest dreams.
"I'm living the dream right now and pinching myself.
"I remember the goal clearly - it's not something I'm likely to forget.
"I went to the back post, managed to shake off my marker and shot home.
"It was my right foot as well - not my strongest - so I was delighted.
"I've played in the Champions League with Rangers and moved to Liverpool but this is right up there with anything I've done in football.
"All my family were here so it's a special night. I'm only 18 and I'm trying to take everything in my stride.
"Someone said I'm the eighth youngest person in history to score for Scotland. That's pretty special and something I will always look back on with pride. But it's only the first step for me and there is more I want to achieve in the game."
Levein was forced to field an experimental team last night after a series of call-offs.
Wilson was one of SEVEN debut boys - with Steven Saunders, David Goodwillie, Cammy Bell, Barry Bannan, Craig Bryson and James McArthur also blooded.
And the Anfield kid reckons the team's display proves there is plenty of talent waiting in reserve.
He said: "We had an inexperienced team in the sense we lacked caps.
"But we weren't lacking in quality. We had a lot of talent in the team. We weren't lacking in any department.
"We pressed the ball high up the park and got the goals at the right time."
Scotland were 3-0 up at the break and looked on course to repeat that 6-0 thrashing in a Euro 2008 qualifier.
But despite dominating the second half, Levein's side failed to add to their tally - with Celtic's Shaun Maloney wide when a bungled backpass left him with just the keeper to beat.
Wilson said: "With a bit of luck we might have scored a few more. We were unlucky in that regard as we were professional throughout."
The stopper admitted his next target is forcing his way into the Liverpool team after making just one appearance since his summer move from Ibrox.
He said: "I will need to take my time and be patient.
"I knew it would be tough going down to Liverpool and that I wouldn't walk into the team. It's a learning process and I'm getting better all the time.
"There is so much more to achieve and I'm up for the challenge. I wouldn't have gone down to Liverpool had I not believed I would succeed.
"I'm working under a great manager in Roy Hodgson. I've only been there a short while but I'm learning.
"There are some great players at the club and my chance will come.
"I just need to make sure I take it when it comes. That's the same with every player, especially the younger ones.
"I am still learning my trade and people can sometimes forget that.
"I haven't thought about going out on loan yet. It's not something I really want to consider because I believe I can be a success at Liverpool."
Fellow goal hero Mackie was relieved to end his 12-game scoring drought after a barren run at club level with QPR.
Now he hopes his first Scotland goal will open the floodgates.
The striker said: "It was a beautiful feeling when the ball hit the net. It was nice to get the tap-in and open my account. Hopefully there are many more goals to come for Scotland.
"There's an element of pressure when you come into the squad because you're asked to perform.
"I wanted to show everyone what I'm about to make sure I stay in the squad.
"The pressure is from myself and I'm pleased with how I did."
Mackie made his debut on the right flank against the Czech Republic as part of Levein's controversial 4-6-0 set-up.
And the English-born ace was pleased to start up front against the Faroes.
The 25-year-old said: "Against the Czechs I was asked to fill a role which wasn't my natural position.
"I'm a striker but physically I was able to play wide and I thought I coped well.
"But up front is my favourite position and hopefully I'll play there again. It's a different level with international football. The Championship is extremely competitive and sets you up well but I want to play in the Premiership.
"Hopefully I can keep doing well for my club side and country.
"I could have scored more goals in the second half and I was a bit disappointed not to get more than one.
"I'm greedy - I'm a striker and that's how I will always be. The fact I hadn't scored for a while wasn't on my mind. I've been playing right-back for two of the last three games for QPR!
"I haven't really been at that end of the park. I haven't played up front all season, only on the right. It doesn't prey on my mind. I'll look to keep playing well and the goals will arrive.
"But it was good to score here. It gives you a taste of that feeling and hopefully I'll get on the goal trail again.
"I've taken some stick from my QPR team-mates but the manager Neil Warnock has been great. He said Scotland was a great chance for me.
"It has always been on my mind that I can play for Scotland and my family are extremely proud.
"There are some good players coming through now and that can only be good for Scottish football."

Thought he was ok yesterday. His postional Play was bad at times, the Second ball been a excellent example as he didnt know whether to follow the chap crossing the ball or to go with the player making the forward run, meaning carra had to fill in which left a space.Still abit sceptical if he is ready for first time action..But he played well against Sparta Prague.

oooh, personally I thought he looked well out of his depth yesterday and got bullied a bit by both Piquionne and Ba. Looked ok V poor opposition in Europa Lge but looks uncomfortable in the prem and needs a bit more time to bed in. play him long term at full back and it could damage him. He's very different from Kelly in terms of strength and confidence so he needs to be handled carefully

I said it when Kenny came in, use the rest of this season to see what the younger players are made off. Kelly has proved with his chance he has what it takes. Shelvey also did well when came in to show he has future. I expect Wilson to play his part between now and the end of the season. Once Carroll comes in, I hope Pacheco gets a few runs. I would say Kenny has seen enough of Spearing and Ngog to know they wont make it at LFC, hopefully Wilson will prove his worth.
