MELWOOD is set for a major overhaul with key members of Rafa Benitez’s backroom staff set to join him at Inter – as Spain bide their time over Fernando Torres’ return from injury.

First team coach Mauricio Pellegrino, goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero and fitness coach Paco de Miguel are likely to link up with Benitez at the San Siro where he is expected to be unveiled as the new Inter manager.

Former Valencia technical director Amedeo Carboni – an Italian who played under Benitez at the Mestalla – is also expected to be added to his backroom staff.

Benitez appointed Pellegrino, Valero and de Miguel during his six year reign as Liverpool boss and is thought to be eager to continue working with the trio in Serie A.

Liverpool have confirmed that no approach has yet been made for any of the coaching staff, who are still under contract to the Anfield club.

If, as expected, that happens once Benitez is confirmed as Jose Mourinho’s successor, Liverpool could demand compensation for any members of the club’s backroom team looking to join the former Reds boss in Italy.

An exodus of staff from Melwood will mean the new Liverpool manager having several key positions to fill immediately.

Benitez parted company with Liverpool by mutual consent last Thursday after a disappointing season in which his team lost 19 games and he failed to guide the club back into the Champions League.
The Spaniard agreed to waive a potential £16m pay-off and instead accepted a severance fee in the region of £6m after the club’s board agreed to offer him a way out of Anfield.

That effectively acted as a vote of no confidence in Benitez, who now tops Inter’s wish-list following Mourinho’s departure to Real Madrid last month.

Last night Inter president Massimo Moratti indicated a deal is immanent to make the Italian speaking Benitez the club’s new head coach on a proposed three-year contract worth 5million euros a year.

Moratti said: “The deal is more or less done. We decisively targetedBenitez from the beginning.â€

It would make sense, any new manager would want his own people in there.

Thats generally standard practice so Im surprised its a headline. Its very rare a manger moves clubs on his own they always have a 'team' with them.

I know we would be entitled to compensation if they move but I dont see the point as has been said any new manager would want to work with his own people he trusts.

Not sure how I want this one to play out. Clearly most/all of the match day staff are gonna go, its just whether Inter pay for it or we sack them. I'd hate the yanks to make any money from this but so I hope it doesnt turn into a game of poker, because Rafa will win. If he thinks the yanks are taking the piss he'll just get new staff and leave us to sack the current ones (at a hefty cost no doubt).

Imo inter will be happy enough to pay the compensation after getting Rafa without paying any compensation.
Rafa starting at Inter will also save the club by reports in the paper £3m from the £6m they would had to pay Rafa if he didn't get a job this season.
And with compensation for his backroom staff .. it wont be far off both side breaking even ...
Surprised the club knowing Inter were after Rafa they didn't hang onto him , offer him no transfer funds and say thy were selling the likes of Torrrs Gerrard and Masch and they money was going to the banks , imo that would have seen him go to Inter and the club could have got compensation for Rafa going to Inter as well , remember Inter got a big compensation package from Madrid for Jose.

Did rafa not have a clause in his contract that no one could be sold without his say so? If that was the case he could have resigned and claimed constructive dismissal like Keegan did at Newcastle. I reckon he'd get more than 6 million at the tribunal too.

Must have been something if the yanks didn't do what i thought they would have done ?

Papers today says Rafa got less than £3m and their will be no more payments once he takes the inter job ..

Imo Rafa showed class and took their offer and walked away ...
