Defender Danny Wilson is expected to agree a move from Rangers to Liverpool in the next seven days.

The 18-year-old has just over a year left on his contract and had turned down the new deal on offer to him.

Liverpool had a previous bid turned down but have returned with an improved offer in the region of £2m plus add-ons that Rangers have deemed acceptable.

The Ibrox club stood to lose the player for around £500,000 in compensation had he not been sold this summer.

Wilson, who made his debut in October, was recently voted PFA Scotland young player of the year, having made over 20 appearances - two in the Champions League - and scored once this season.

Injury ended his campaign prematurely, but he will leave Ibrox with winners' medals from Rangers' Scottish Premier League and Co-operative Insurance Cup triumphs.

I fear Rafa's been told he can only have cash to fund a few small price players, so he's using the funds to try and invest for the future ... in the hopes of signing someone who will become a star, in the future.

Liverpool poised to wrap up £2.5m deal for Rangers' 18-year-old defender Danny Wilson

Liverpool expect to sign Rangers defender Danny Wilson over the next 48 hours.

Tottenham had shown interest in the 18-year-old but Liverpool have increased their offer to £2.5million and hope to ratify the deal early this week.

Centre half Wilson, voted Scotland's young player of the year, has only one year left on contract and had refused a new deal.

Caught the end of an interview with him on SSN last night and it doesn't seem as if we have signed him yet. He mentioned some common ground needed to be found (assume he meant with us) and that other offers have to be considered as well.

TEENAGER Danny Wilson has snubbed Champions Rangers by rejecting a staggering £12,000 a week extended contract in favour of a move to Liverpool.
The 18 year old was offered the biggest ever financial deal for a player in his age group at Ibrox but has opted to sign for Rafael Benitez's side later this week.
The central defender who has also knocked back interest from Spurs was earning just £700 a week last year before breaking into the Rangers first team and making a significant impact on both the domestic and European fronts.
His decision to head for Anfield in a transfer worth up to £3m with add ons means he will be sacrificing playing in the Champions League next season with both Rangers and Spurs.
But the Scottish Football Writers and PFA Young Player of the Year who made 24 first team appearances in his debut season scoring once has been lured to Liverpool to work with former Celtic and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish.
Wilson has just over a year on his current contract and boss Walter Smith was keen to keep him for the longer term believing it would benefit his career and secure him more regular first team football.
Livingston-born Wilson came through Rangers youth system. He made his debut against Dundee last October and the following month the then 17-year-old became the youngest Rangers player to ever play in the Champions League.
In total he has made 24 appearances this season and scored his first goal for the club in their recent 4-1 win over Hearts.

Danny Wilson is edging ever closer to the Ibrox exit as he prepares to seal a dream move to English Premier League giants Liverpool.

And the 18-year-old today paid tribute to the two footballing figures he believes have played vital roles in enabling him to attract the attention of one of Europe’s leading clubs in the first place.

It now appears a case of when rather than if the young defender completes his £2.5million move to the Anfield club – a fee which could rise to as much as £4m in add-ons – and manager Walter Smith admitted as much over the weekend.

Despite still having a year left to run on his existing contract, the Light Blues aren’t in a position to take a chance on allowing their top young talent to run down his contract and leave anything to chance with a compensation tribunal.

That, of course, means when Liverpool get around to tabling an offer – it isn’t expected to depend on Rafael Benitez retaining his job – that Wilson will pack his bags and head for what should prove to be an exciting challenge on Merseyside to team up with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

Wilson, for now, is happy to wait and see what develops in the future as he seems in no rush to quit Rangers, pointing out that he still has a year of his deal to run when other first-team players are out-of-contract at the end of this month.

Still living in his family home, he is a young player who hasn’t allowed his rapid rise to prominence within Scottish football to go to his head. He also speaks with the confidence and maturity of someone coming towards the end of their career rather than at the start.

And when he dishes out fulsome praise for the roles both his manager Smith, and defensive colleague Davie Weir, have played in helping him along this season, you know he means every word.

“I’ve already admitted I would have been happy with just one appearance this season,” said Wilson. “But I’ve played 24 matches, two of them being Champions League appearances as well as making my Old Firm debut so I really couldn’t have asked for any more.”

He went on: “For that, firstly, I owe Walter Smith a great deal of gratitude as he has shown a lot of faith in me. He could have easily changed things around, moving in players from other areas of the team as opposed to playing me.

“But he didn’t. He showed faith in me and, for myself, that was fantastic.

“I didn’t move round to the first-team dressing room until Christmas time, although I had been training with the first team at different times since I was 16.

“People maybe say the manager should play more young players, but he is in a difficult position because you are expected to win every single game at this club.

“Sometimes he might be a bit reluctant to play a younger guy, but I understand from his point of view why he wouldn’t play an inexperienced player. He is a serious manager, but he is also an approachable manager. You can talk to him and his advice is excellent.”

While Smith’s help comes off the field of play, the man who has talked the youngster through most of his top team appearances is 40-year-old Weir.

Wilson, of course, says he owes his defensive colleague a massive thank you for the part he has played in his development.

“Davie has been brilliant with me,” said Weir. “He is so calm on the field and you learn so much from training and playing beside him.

“Even during games, he never shouts or loses his composure. If you make a mistake then you know you have and that is still the case for someone as young as me.

“If you maybe get under the ball, he will wait a couple of minutes and just mention your starting position or he’ll perhaps tell you that you should have cleared the ball first time. But he is always constructive and I can’t thank him enough.”

So how does playing next to Weir compare to linking up in central defence with Madjid Bougherra?

Wilson starts laughing before saying: “I played next to Boogie at St Mirren and he spent the game bombing down the right wing.

“Seriously, though, he is another fantastic footballer. I like to pass the ball out from defence, but I don’t have the ability to do what he does and run forward and stuff.

“But playing with these guys and the rest of the team has been a fantastic education, and they have helped me a great deal this season since coming into the team.”

Time, of course, will tell if Wilson does indeed move to the English Premier League.

You get the feeling he is so laid back he isn’t getting caught up in the prospect of linking up with some of the world’s best players. Either way, he won’t forget the men who have helped him reach for the stars.

Liverpool FC Danny Wilson deal close as Rangers team-mate Madjid Bougherra wants to join him

LIVERPOOL are closing in on a £2.5million deal for Danny Wilson and his Rangers team-mate Madjid Bougherra is hoping to join him at Anfield.

Wilson, 18, has only one year remaining on his contract with the SPL champions and manager Walter Smith has admitted defeat in his battle to tie him down to a new deal.

The young centre-back’s switch is likely to be confirmed when the transfer window reopens in June.

Wilson has been a major hit in Scotland this season and recently claimed both the PFA and FWA Young Player awards.

Bougherra is keen to return to the Premier League this summer and has made it clear Liverpool is his preferred destination.

The former Charlton Athletic defender is currently with the Algeria squad at a training camp in Switzerland ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa.

His agent Farid Raayad claims Liverpool have expressed an interest in his services and if the Reds follow it up with an official approach then cash-strapped Rangers maybe forced to sell.

“If a big team comes in and Rangers accept an offer for me that is destiny,” said Bougherra, who cost £2.5million from Charlton in July 2008.

Wilson has paved the way for his switch south of the border by paying tribute to the roles played by former Everton duo Smith and David Weir in his development.Manager Smith gave him his first team debut back in October and 40-year-old defensive partner Weir has provided guidance during a dream campaign.

“I’ve already admitted I would have been happy with just one appearance this season,” he said.

“But I’ve played 24 matches, two of them being Champions League appearances, as well as making my Old Firm debut so I really couldn’t have asked for any more.

“I owe Walter Smith a great deal of gratitude as he has shown a lot of faith in me. He could have easily changed things around, moving in players from other areas of the team as opposed to playing me. But he didn’t. He showed faith in me and that was fantastic.

“Davie has also been brilliant with me. He is so calm on the field and you learn so much from training and playing beside him. Even during games, he never shouts or loses his composure.

“If you maybe get under the ball, he will wait a couple of minutes and just mention your starting position or he’ll perhaps tell you that you should have cleared the ball first time. But he is always constructive and I can’t thank him enough.”

Wilson has also played alongside Bougherra this season and is a big fan of the 27-year-old Algerian.

“Boogie is another fantastic footballer,” he said. “I like to pass the ball out from defence, but I don’t have the ability to do what he does and run forward and stuff.

“Playing with these guys and the rest of the team has been a fantastic education.”

Danny Wilson’s dream move to Liverpool has stalled — because the young Rangers defender does not meet a ‘homegrown’ quota system being introduced by the English Premier League.

Now the cash-strapped Ibrox club could lose out on up to £3million if the 18-year-old remains in Glasgow next season before leaving when his contract expires.

Sportsmail understands Wilson had proven particularly attractive to the Merseyside giants because they are planning for new regulations which will demand eight homegrown players in every topflight club’s 25-man squad.

Liverpool initially believed it applied to footballers from across the whole of the British Isles, but their interest has now cooled after it emerged only youngsters brought through at English and Welsh clubs will qualify.
This has forced a hitch in the projected Wilson deal, which had seen Liverpool offer a £2.5m down payment, with a further £1.5m in add-ons.

While it is believed they still want to sign the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year, it will not be with the same urgency as before. Wilson has rejected all offers of an extension to his contract with Rangers.

And it’s understood that, if no agreement can be struck with Liverpool at the moment, he will resolve to remain at Ibrox next season before becoming eligible to sign a pre-contract elsewhere in January.

Any club signing Wilson would then have to pay only around £650,000 in compensation under FIFA rules relating to players under the age of 24.

FA Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: ‘All clubs must declare their 25-man squad at the end of August after the close of the transfer window.
‘No more than 17 of those players can be over the age of 21 and not home-grown.

‘The definition of homegrown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system. It is not in a club’s interests to stockpile players. It will make buying home-grown talent more attractive.’

Rafa Benitez has already started to adjust Liverpool’s staffing levels, with young Englishman Jonjo Shelvey signing from Charlton Athletic.

Liverpool will have to pay £5 million if they want to sign Rangers’ young defender Danny Wilson. According to reports in the Daily Record on Thursday, the English Premier League side have been told they will not be able to sign the player for a fee below the Ibrox club’s valuation.

It is said by the newspaper that Liverpool were prepared to pay £3 million for the Scottish player’s services, having had a £2 million offer rejected earlier in May.

Rangers reportedly won’t accept any less than £5 million for their prized asset, who could leave for next to nothing in the summer of 2011 if no club matches his value this summer.

Wilson turned down a contract offer to stay in Glasgow as the season drew to a close. His current deal with the club is due to expire in the summer of 2011, meaning Rangers would receive only a nominal amount of training compensation in a year’s time.

It had been reported by some earlier in the week a hitch regarding the English top flight’s new limitations on squad sizes may have led to the Wilson deal collapsing altogether. However, STV Sport’s understanding is the ruling will have no impact on any possible transfer.

Introduced from next season, all clubs in the English Premier League have agreed to limit their player pools to 25, with eight of the players having to be classed as ‘homegrown’. To qualify for that status, a player has to have spent a minimum of three years at any English or Welsh club while under the age of 21

With Wilson still 18, Liverpool would be able to buy the central defender and, in three years time, have him as one of their ‘homegrown’ players. But in the meantime, he would still be able to play for the club without affecting their quota, despite reports he would be would be classed as one of his prospective team’s foreign players.

The rules of the new system stipulate that all players under the age of 21 are not included in the 25-man limit. Therefore, Liverpool can still sign and play Wilson without losing a spot for one of their clutch of overseas stars.

Even more crucially, having then spent three years on Merseyside, he would then be deemed as a ‘homegrown’ player for the club upon his 21st birthday.
.

Forget about the "home grown rule" Rangers are playing on this rule knowing we need to sign him while he is 18 so he will be at the club 3 years by the age of 21...

Wait until Jan at pay the compo of £650k

If we sign him now he wont effect the premier league quota as under 21 plus in 3 years he will then qualify under the home grown rule as 18 now.
If dont sign him now and wait until his contract runs out he wont qualify under the home grown rule .
That's why imo Ranger have asked for £5m .....

Id forget about the homegrown rule and sign him in Jain on a pre contract and just pay the £650k compensation and :p at Rangers .. and let him get another year under his belt as well.

Rangers are waiting for Liverpool to make an improved bid for highly-rated teenager Danny Wilson after they rejected a £2million offer from the Reds.

The Scottish champions confirmed the Anfield club were interested in signing the 18-year-old around two months ago.

Gers manager Walter Smith has revealed the club have recently turned down an offer for the promising youngster.

"We are currently waiting to hear back from Liverpool after we rejected their original £2million offer," he told The Sunday Post.
Refused

Left-sided centre-half Wilson has refused his club's attempts to extend his contract - which has just one year remaining.

Rangers would receive just several hundred thousands of pounds in compensation should he leave Ibrox next summer.

Livingston-born Wilson made 25 first-team appearances last season and with his club resigned to losing the hot prospect, they will try and hold out for as much money as the Scottish Football Writers' Young Player of the Year could attract.

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain admitted the club had rejected approaches from two English Premier League clubs back in January, with Tottenham strongly linked with a move.

Danny Wilson's Liverpool switch on hold

Danny Wilson's switch to Liverpool from Rangers is on hold while the Reds search for a new manager.

The teenage Scottish defender has set his heart on a move south to Anfield and was hopeful a deal could be done after Rangers rejected a £2million bid from Rafa Benitez.

But Benitez's departure last week has left Wilson in limbo and he must wait to find out if the Reds' next boss will press ahead with the move.

Wilson has just one year left on his deal at Ibrox and Liverpool are keen not to pay over the odds for a player, who would be available for just £650,000 compensation next
summer.

Definitely joining Liverpool next month is Serbian striker Milan Jovanovic who had already agreed a three-year contract with Liverpool and passed a medical prior to Benitez leaving.

Jovanovic will officially complete his move to Liverpool from Standard Liege on July 1

Danny Wilson’s dream move to Anfield in doubt as Liverpool FC search for a new manager
Jun 11 2010 by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2010/06/11/danny-wilson-s-dream-move-to-anfield-in-doubt-as-liverpool-fc-search-for-a-new-manager-100252-26631360/

DANNY WILSON’S dream move to Anfield is hanging in the balance as Liverpool conduct their search for a new manager.

The departure of boss Rafa Benitez has brought to a halt talks over a deal for the Rangers defender.

The Reds recently had a £2million bid rejected by the SPL champions for the 18-year-old but remained confident an agreement would be reached.

Benitez was a big admirer of Livingston-born Wilson, who picked up both the Scottish PFA and Football Writers Young Player of the Year awards.

However, the Spaniard’s exit means the transfer is on the backburner and Benitez’s successor will have to decide whether to pursue a deal for the talented youngster.

Even if Benitez had stayed, Liverpool didn’t envisage Wilson’s transfer being completed before the start of July so they are hopeful the current uncertainty won’t jeopardise their hopes of bringing him south of the border.

Some reports have suggested the failure to swiftly tie up a deal for Wilson after the end of the season was due to a lack of cash at Anfield.

But Liverpool insist money was always available and the delay has been down to ensuring they don’t pay over the odds for a player who only has a year left on his current contract.

Wilson has rejected the offer of a new deal from Rangers and could walk away for just £650,000 in compensation next summer.

Wilson is believed to have his heart set on a move to Merseyside and Liverpool Reserves defender Alex Cooper is hoping the Reds’ new boss completes the transfer.
Cooper, who joined Liverpool from Ross County two and a half years ago, has played alongside Wilson at youth level for Scotland.

“I rate Danny very highly and think he’d do well at Liverpool,” Cooper said. “It won’t surprise me if he comes and starts challenging for a place in the first team.”

Wilson’s situation is different to striker Milan Jovanovic, who had already agreed a three-year contract with Liverpool and passed a medical prior to Benitez leaving.

The Reds intend to press on with signing the Serbian international on a Bosman from Standard Liege.

Meanwhile, Liverpool insist no appointment is imminent as they continue to compile a shortlist of candidates to take over from Benitez.

Roy Hodgson remains the favourite to land the job but there has so far been no approach to Fulham to speak to their manager
