Reds to sport new-look shirt
28th Apr 2010
Liverpool will wear Carlsberg on their shirts for the final time at Anfield this weekend - but it'll be with a difference.
The Danish brewers' name has adorned the red shirt at every home game over the last eighteen years - but as Carlsberg prepare to sign off as the club's shirt sponsors at the end of the season their name will be displayed in Chinese language for the clash with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
With Liverpool the only UK city exhibiting at World Expo in Shanghai - its twin city - later this year, Carlsberg officials came up with the novel idea of interacting with the club's massive fan base in that part of the world.
Carlsberg Group Sponsorship Director Keld Strudahl said, "We're delighted to have been able to bring about this momentous occasion. We believe it's a nice little gesture to our friends and fans of Liverpool FC in China, where we know the Club devoted huge support in working things out and we also worked hard with all parties to mark this special occasion for the World Expo."
In addition to the change on the front of the players' shirts, Chinese messages will be displayed during the match on the perimeter advertising boardings and in the Carlsberg Lounge at Anfield a Chinese competition winner will present a trophy to the "Man of the Match" after the final whistle.
The Chinese Carlsberg logo will be only the fifth logo ever printed on a Liverpool FC shirt. Liverpool FC's first sponsor was Hitachi, followed by Crown Paints, Candy and then Carlsberg in 1992.

Its in conjunction with the World Expo later this year .. just a marketing idea by Carlsberg as their will be Millions acrooss Asia watching the game.
The Club has huge support in Asia so this is also helpful to the club and all Carlsberg advertising boards will also be in Chinese.

id never want liverpool to loose no matter what, i always want to beat chelsea or any other team, who ever wins the league will win it because the gained the most points over the season so today is only one match out of the season, a win today would be nice to finish off a terrible season and for the fans paying in to see it also, how ever if chelsea do win and go onto win the leauge it is all the better from a liverpool point of view, but come next season do we still want chelsea to win it again if we are out of the title race early, it just cant go on like this, some major re-organising is required during the summer

I know that this sounds bad but a win for Chelsea today would more or less end the Scum's chances of winning the league. On the other hand we have no chance of getting 4th place.
So I am although I would never want Liverpool to lose a match, I think we need to swallow our pride and hope for a Chelsea win because allowing the scum to win a 19th title would be a million times worse!!!!

I am really looking forward to discussing this shower of absolute crap! 1 attempt on target by the home team to their 11 attempts. This team lack absolutely everything from back to front. The only person i feel sorry for is Pepe Reina who is the only player who comes out of the season with any credibility. Gerrard turned hi second game this season after Burnley, tremendous.
Oh yeah and we should discuss Aquilani again after he has started again, anything changed?

Depressing stuff. The team were trying their best and were not good enough. 4th defo now gone.
Worst season in 11 years. Manager's position should be reviewed. No investment is his excuse and it's a valid one. Some of the performances, tactics and level of effort though were not acceptable with so many international players and some on over 70k a week.
Fck what the result means to United, it's sign of the current shambles within the club from top to bottom.

I get sick of people constantly saying I'm this I'm that for posting my opinions on here after poor performances. I can only imagine that The Beard is either happy with todays performance and the season or doesn't give a sh***!
We were an utter disgrace today and that team deserves a bloody rocket up it. To repay the best supporters in the land who have turned out week in week out to watch football of the worst calibre on a regular basis with that shower on our last home game is appauling!
The club has been run into the ground by a couple of clueless yanks and that has feed through the whole team. There was not one performer out there today. Mascherano was woeful at right back, I know out of position but the manager put him there. Gerrard played on the fringes of the game and ultimately turned the game with his best pass of the game. Our £20m man pranched around showing the odd glimmer when we were on top only to disappear when we needed him. Babel came on and did the usual and Kuyt was woeful. Need i go on?
I just can't wait for this season to end and my only fear is this is the start of things to come. I can't see things getting better. Rafa has the cheek to say we need 5 new players well he bought what we presntly have so would you trust him with more cash?
Fowler's God

The lads worked hard but we all saw the main reasons why Chelsea will lift the premiership and were nowhere to be seen.We need major investment to keep up with the top 4 so it's hard for me to realise how some fans can turn on the team when the money clearly isn't there. We could get any manager in,it won't matter.Money talks at the end of the day.

Lets face some facts here today lads......
Torres, Aurelio, Johnson and Skrtel are players that if fit, would almost all be in the first team.
3 of them are defenders, and 1 of them is possibly the best striker on earth.
Mascherano played right back, and Ayala had to come in for the stricken Carragher.
It was always gonna be a tough match for us today, and for 30 minutes we matched, if not bettered, the chavs who were at full strength.
We tired after the first half, and the first goal knocked the stuffing out of us.
Its easy to say we should have been putting in more effort, but its not that simplistic Im afraid.
Its been a long, hard depressing season.
Its easily been one of the worst Ive witnessed as a Reds fan...
But we're a club like no other, and we will bounce back.
Maybe not next season or the one after.... but we will come back from it all.
Remember the mancs went 26 years without a title, the chavs went 50 years till their 2nd.
I know the game has changed and money plays its part, but we're a huge club and interest from the right people at the right time will come.
We're in the doldrums right now, and Rafa Benitez takes most of the blame for us feeling this way....
Because we've had some great highs under him.
He has lifted this club so high, that our expectations are unrealistic.
We dont have money, we dont have a big squad, but last year we nearly got the holy grail.
This season we have taken only 1 point less than last years total from home league games, but away games is where we have really suffered.
Last season we got 43 points on our travels, compared to a measly 20 this time around, with a further 3 points to play for.
We've lost 8 games on our travels compared to just 2 last year.
As a team we've been hugely uncharacteristic, individually as well, compared to the other season under Rafa.
We were sometimes very easy to beat, and confidence drained from the team after the very first game imo, a defeat to Spurs.
When Villa came to Anfield and marched off with all 3 points, we'd already matched the 2 defeats from the previous season with about 35 games left to play.
It set the scene for a disastrous season....
Aquilani not being fit, injuries to Torres, Gerrard, Johnson spread across the season meant we were never gonna get back into the title race, and we'd struggle to stay in contention for the 4th spot, which, was still attainable if we could have beaten the chavs today, albeit really tough to achieve.
Spurs, Villa and in particular Man City have all had bags of cash to spend on quality players, while we had to make do with Nick he Greek, coming in for 1.5mill, and Maxi on a free, both not bad pieces of business when you look back on their contributions to our season after they arrived.
The aforementioned team have added players for big money now for the last few seasons, while we were risking our biggest sums of money on 1 player, see Robbie Keane and Alberto Aquilani.... both were risks we had to take, one didnt work out and has departed, and Aquilani was a disaster in that he didnt get onto the pitch at the time we, and the LFC management believed he would be fit for.
Believe what you will on the Aqua situation... but he is a good footballer, and if he can get a season under his belt, Im sure we'll find he will be a good acquistion by LFC.
All in all, we are were we deserve to be.
Out of the CL next year.
And our aims lowered, CL qualification is no longer a gimme.
Lets not forget how integral a part both Gillett & Hicks have played in our downfall. How Benitez is still our manager even now defies logic after the shite he's had to put up with.
And while Im on the subject of Rafa, I must say that he is far from blameless in our season also.
There have been times when Ive literally been pulling my hair out at some of the things he's done over the course of the season, and at times Ive really had a go at him in this forum, and rightfully justified too.
Ive maintained that he will never win a title while at Anfield, and in all possibilty he may never do so.....
However, if he doesnt get a warchest from our owners to compete with the warchests of Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, Villa Park and the substantial warchest that is awaiting the summer transfer market at Eastlands, then its fair to say that Rafa will never win a league title.
How can he?????
You can haggle all you want, but you will be outbid for the best talent by one if not more of the teams above...
Under "our owners" Rafa has not gotten anything near a warchest on the scale thats required, yet last season we nearly did it.
For 5 years we on top of the European game... why???
Madrid, Barcelona, are just 2 names to add to the mix of wealthy clubs above that Rafa has had to contend with not only in competitions, but for signings also.
If we do get an owner that is ready to hand over a wedge comparable to the rest, then Benitez deserves a go at it.
Its the least he deserves...
I may not be Rafa's biggest fan at times... but he deserves my respect no end.

Missing Essien, Bosingwa, Mikel, and Carvalho would make me think that they were not at full strength either.
I'm not having a go, but the point is that a lot has been made about the team's injury problems with season. I would argue that other teams at the top end of the table have had similar problems [argubly, worse] over the course of the season. You can make the argument that our squad is not as strong as other squads, and that may be the case. I'm not posting this to argue whether this is the manager's fault, the owners', or a combination.
One thing that struck me about the Athletico game and again yesterday during the Chelsea game was that I really think that the loss of Arbeloa and Hyypia has been underappreciated. People may argue that Arbeloa never set the world alight, but he rarely made a mistake, could slot in at left or right back without affecting the shape or balance of the team [and covered in a sweeping role a couple of times as well], and did offer something going forward.

People may argue that Arbeloa never set the world alight, but he rarely made a mistake, could slot in at left or right back without affecting the shape or balance of the team [and covered in a sweeping role a couple of times as well], and did offer something going forward.
Ill give you Essien and Carvalho, I rate both very highly, and missed out on them.
But it hasn't shown in recent weeks that they've been missed due to their squad being so strong.
BTW, Im very much in agreement with your points on Arbeloa and Hyypia.
I always thought that Alvaro did a good job for us, and he wasn't the worst going forward either.
Sami has proven what a loss he was by being so good in the German league this year.
Our squad depth is the killer in all honesty. We just cannot cope when we lose some key players. The fact that the other teams had as many injuries as us, yet are still occupying the top 3 slots is testament to that.

Liverpool 0 Chelsea 2
- Drogba 33
- Lampard 54
And so Liverpool’s race for 4th comes to its inevitable end and failure! Indeed, the quest for 4th was already nearly a lost cause before kick-off as both Man City and Spurs had won the day before. A tired Liverpool team after their failed efforts versus Atletico were unable to lift themselves to better this Chelsea team and keep an outside chance open for 4th. And if anything, we made it easy for Chelsea and gave up putting in any real fight. But it was mainly due to lack of ability. This was far from a title-burster match that it could have been for Chelsea.
Benitez lined up Liverpool in a 4-2-3-1 format, again with some changes, some foced. Kyrgiakos returned in the centre, Agger was moved to left-back as a stand-in, Mascherano remained as a stand-in right-back as Johnson was injured.
———— Reina ————
Masch - Carra - Kyrgiakos – Agger
--------- Gerrard - Lucas ----
Maxi - Aquilani --- Benayoun
——––––– Kuyt ———
Liverpool were forced into some early changes. Babel came on for an injured Maxi on 42 mins (as Benayoun switched to the right) and Ayala came on for Jamie Caragher on 57 mins after Chelsea’s 2nd goal. Indeed Carra’s injury may have been a complicit factor in that goal. N’Gog came on for Aquilani on 77 mins as Kuyt moved into ‘the hole’.
Liverpool were as good as Chelsea in the opening period. They put in reasonable effort and gave as good as they got. Lampard was close from long-range, but Liverpool were arguably the better side in a so-so opening half-hour. Aquilani came close with a shot from outside the box area that glanced off the bar with Cech well beaten.
But then a shocking lack of concentration from Gerrard resulted in a gifted back-pass attempt being collected by Drogba who waltzed passed Reina to finish it into the net. It was perhaps symobolic of Liverpool’s season. Chelsea also had a claim for a penalty when Kalou fell under attention from Lucas.
Chelsea started the 2nd half with more vigour. Anelka inexplicitly missed from almost in the goal, but then he provided an assist when he layed the ball across to an unattended Lampard who slid in an easy finish. Liverpool looked visibly drained at that point and the match was perhaps already over as a contest, as was Liverpool’s season.
Ayala came on for Carra, but Liverpool were tested repeatedly with some good saves from Reina. It seemed that both teams were content to play out the match. Benitez’s body language at times was of anger, perhaps the dying kicks of a manager who’s time now has surely come and gone. The tally at the end read Liverpool’s 7 attempts with only 2 on target, to Chelsea’s 15 attempts with 11 on target. The gulf between the teams was perhaps even more than that.
As Chelsea clinically close in on the title, Liverpool released their last faint hopes of getting the coveted Champions League football and all this from a season that started with so many expectations and much optimism. Now the season is ending like a damp squib, with uncertainty surrounding both the ownership and direction of the club as well as the future of the manager, Rafa Benitez. The players and manager walked around Anfield for the “end of season” Thank You, but there was a tepid response.
The time’s they are a changing …… and the future is uncertain.
