What will Rafa's approach to this one be? Will he be resting players for Thursday night? Is there any danger of a humiliating defeat at Burnley?

Depending on results before our game i think will determine if Rafa rest players ..

If spurs beat utd we will be 11 points behind them ...... so even if we beat burnley 8 points behind with 3 games to go .....

Being liverpool football club we should be able to rest players and still beat burnley I will not be impressed by a struggle at burnley. We have no pressure, let the shackles off, go out and push on from the first minute and get the goals. Kill the game off early and then rest players. Burnley are down and out, this should be easy. There a championship team!

Players are bound to be tired but if we can manage a decent performance and some goals it might give us that vital little boost for the second leg next thursday.

I agree that we should have more than enough to see off Burnley and still rest a few. but Rafa must be positive and let whatever team he puts out play.

if spurs get a result at OT (highly unlikely i think but u never know) then 4th is gone really so he'd definitely do a 'roy hodgson' on the teamsheet and rest players. its hard ot know what to wish for tehn. u want to win evry game - but u can understand people thinking if we got 8th and had no european football next season, then at leat til january and the fa cup u could jsut put out ure best 11 in every league game and that would massively increase our chances of 4th...coz european football is always a distraction and the europa league even more so coz ure travelling as far east as mongolia and have loadsa poxy sunday and monday games etc. the only thing worth fighting for int he league is the golden glove for pepe coz he sooooooo deserves something for his efforts this season. i'm not agreeing with that point of view, or disagreeing either....i'm just saying there is a certain logic to hust having the league to worry about next season.
either way, our u-18s should bt burnley...laws must be the most bizarre appointment to a struggling club in the history of the prem....closely followed by mr. bouncebackability himself at hull

Why would we rest players. We haven't even qualified for the Europa League. 4th is long gone !

We've won 4 games away in the league and Chelski will probably beat us. We need the points to make sure Everton ( who have a very easy run in on paper ) don't knock us out of Europe !!

Having said that I hope he rests Ngog, Babel and El Zhar for about 15 Years I'll be happy.:D

defiantly the best senario it would be great to finish the season on a high by winning the europa league beating chelsea and safe in the knowledge that
in
doing so were not handing the title to united

Rafa returns to the scene of his deepest and darkest moments with LFC and there's been a few of those. The sight of Jimmy Traore getting himself in a right tiss will haunt me forever.

I fear there will be more excuses after this one. We have no one to play up front and this will cost us dearly against the lethal Burnley! I have no confidence in this team and don't see the point in discussing line ups because it really doesn't matter who turns out!

I'd give Riera and run out at least he has something to prove and would put in a performance. When you look at what he said it in't a million miles off or is it?

Am I right in thinking that was Rafa's first year in charge? Did Nunez also get sent off in that game? Was it a postponed game as the first game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch?

So many teams begin with the letter 'b' so I could be mixed up but if I am not is this the first time we have played Burnley in six seasons?

I can't for the life of me explain it but I feel the same, we were so poor the other night and confidence is back at it's all time low! We've no striker, no left back, our two midfielders aren't allowed across the halfway line and good oul stevie couldn't care less about what's going on! Not sure where a win would come from!

I'll tell you what though. People can call Aquilani a flop or a waste of money or whatever but every time I've seen him he's shown glimpses of the player we payed the money for. Burnley have had the better chances, 2 headers, one of which went straight to Pepe and one skied over the bar, but we've been the better team.

We've played some nice incisive stuff going forward.

We need to tighten up at the back and stop Patterson getting his crosses in, thats the only way Burnley will score imo.

Aqua, Gerrard, Maxi and Johnson have played some lovely stuff, we just need to finish off/get some shots on goal.

Im not going to read any posts that start with "Dreadful" "Boring" etc, etc, Burnley are in a relegation dogfight and we've practically nothing left to play for in this league.

I still see us winning this game, and if we get 1, it could end up 2 or 3.

Bit harsh on the Diggler there he has scored some important goals for us over the years.

See what you mean fitting in with Arsenals style more than ours but its always nice to have a few more aesthetically (spelling) pleasing players on the eye (no gay jokes) in our colours. Him and Maxi will give us an extra dimension hopefull next year.

Burnley look dangerous from crosses, this is what we must cut out in the 2nd half.

Okay I'll make myself clear. We have dominated possession in most games we have played this season but what we don't do is create anywhere near enough chances. We have been guilty of over playing and maybe lacking a creative edge even though we have enough flair players. The facts are that goals win matches not just ball possession.

Anyway the goal may just be what we need. Burnley need to come at us and hopefully we can pick them off.

anyone desribe the goal for me please?

Yossi picked the ball up in midfield, some one touch passing and the ball reached Gerrard, he cut inside, took a shot that was curling to the far post, and a heavy deflection took it just inside the near post.

Goal of the seaosn :)

Yossi backheeled it into Gerrard's path, he played a one-two with Aqua before hitting it from the edge of the box and it took a deflection, wrongfooting Jensen in the process.

Today we played some great football.
Burnley, as suspected would huff and puff from the off and made some decent chances, 2 headers, but Pepe was never really troubled by either.

In contrast we had plenty of the ball, but the difference today was Aqualani in center midfield. He was outstanding throughout.
A Hand in 3 goals, and a MOTM performance has given those who doubted him a kick in the arse. It may also have opened Rafa's eyes on the issue, but its unfair to comment on that aspect, as I dont know what goes on behind the scenes.

All in all, a great performance and some outstanding individual showings today.
Clean Sheet.
First away win since Villa.
4 goals.
Team looked well balanced from the start, and even more so when Yossi came on.

And I have absolutely nothing to complain about!!

Great game to watch, we were a bit laboured in the first half but I think we were containing the game reasonably well. Got a break early in the second and never looked back. The formation was very natural and flowing and Aquaman and Gerrard look like they've been playing together for years, i guess they have been training together now for the best part of a year!

I think its amazing to see how far Lucas has come on as a player, he came on to the pitch today and confidently got straight into the action, linked up well and I think it was him that dropped a lovely ball over the top for Babels goal!

Loving Stevie back in the middle with Masch with Aqua in behind the front man. Some great linking up and one, two touch passing throughout. Moved the ball quickly all day, loved it. Cannot wait to get to Anfield for Thursday now!

Aqua was brilliant. Simple passes, eye of a needle passes, quick feet to make space for himself and even a shot from his own half. Xabi who, we will be saying next year. I pray that he starts on Thursday now and that Dirks injury isnt too bad.

Should shut some of the moaners up from the first half on here for a bit anyway. Great "support".

Jensen stayed big as long as he could, and although he was going the other way, managed to get a hand to the shot, which was too powerful for him.
It was almost identical to Torres goal at Old Toilet last year, VDS got a hand to it, but couldnt stop it.

Babel looked lively, and although he lost the ball on a few occasions, he always tried to beat his man in the right area's.

As a team, each player was effective today.

Credit where it is due, great performance. Good team selection. Not great in the first half but I think it just took the first 45 for them to click. Game changed when Kuyt went off, honestly he was terrible. Its criminal the amount of times he gives the ball away or breaks up our attacks.

Other than that, Aqua and Maxi looked good. Have to enjoy these days when we get them.

One of my best days ever stream wise. The whole 2nd half without a freeze.

Performance wasn't great; giving up too many opportunities and some questionable play from Johnson (again). But winning away and grabbing 4 goals I dont think I can complain.

Rafa 'experimented' as he went 3-2-4-1 with Lucas and Masch in midfield with Aquilani pushing forward with Gerrard. It was only like that for 4 mins until Gerrard went off and Pacheco came on, then it was sort-of 3-2-3-2 as Babel stayed up-front. The game was over though as a contest so these experiments by Rafa cant have much value if any.

more to follow ....

Burnley 0 Liverpool 4
- Gerrard 52, 59
- Maxi 74
- Babel 90+4

Liverpool eventually got some goals in a match that relegated Burnley. Liverpool weren’t great, but Burnley could neither score nor defend well and their performance epitomised their season – just not good enough. Liverpool didn’t do much really so the result was glossed to some extent by a scoreline that did not reflect the reality of the match. So whilst it was closer than the 4 goal gap suggested. nevertheless it was a well-deserved and easy win for Liverpool. With Tottenham losing at Man Utd, Man City drawing with Arsenal, and Villa beating Birmingham, Liverpool’s hunt for 4th still hangs by a thread.

Benitez rested several players and lined up Liverpool in a loose 4-2-3-1 formation, Ayala getting a start, in defence with Aquilani in midfield but having the option to push forward:

———— Reina ————
Johnson - Carra - Ayala – Agger
--------- Aquilani - Masch ----
Maxi ---- Gerrard ----- Babel
——––––– Kuyt ———

Benayoun came on for an injured Kuyt on 48 mins with Babel going centre forward, Lucas came on for Agger on 78 mins (at which point Liverpool switched to a back-3 with Johnson on the left) and then Pacheco came on for Gerrard on 82 mins.

This was a must-win game for Burnley, and whilst they tried and showed some endeavour they were just not good enough. Liverpool had the majority of play early on but didn’t create much apart from a Babel shot. Liverpool gave the ball away too easily and will certainly need to do better against Atletico Madrid on Thursday. Gerrard was looking lively and got off a half-volley in the box.

Then it was Burnley’s turn to create a chance and they had a header over the bar, followed later with a header straight at Reina. A different team may have punished Liverpool more. Then Babel shot tanely at the other end.

At the start of the 2nd half, Liverpool had to make an early change as Kuyt went off and was replaced by Benayoun, he went to the left and Babel went in as a make-shift central striker. It was Burnely who had the next chance when Reina saved well from a Burnley free. But then the deadlock was broken somewhat fortuitously as a Gerrard shot from 20-yards took a deflection and nestled into the corner of the net. It was a welcome goal nonetheless and nearly deserved.

This gave Liverpool a pep in their step and more confidence and the 2nd came soonafter after a through ball was miscontrolled by Aquilani only to be hit 1st time into the corner of the net from all of 25 yards by Gerrard. A fantastic goal from Stevie who in this match was showing what he can do.

Burnley weren’t giving up though and tested Reina again, before also testing the post, although it looked like there may have been a hand-ball. That bounce of the post was perhaps symbolic of Burnley’s season, things were just not going in. Meanwhile, Maxi tested their keeper with a near post shot which was perhaps a sign of something to come. Burnley were pressing as best they could but a good long ball through from Aquilani found Maxi who finished it to make it 3-0 and psychologoically defeat Burnely and consign them to relegation.

The match as a contest was finished at that point with 15 mins left. And to add some icing to Liverpool’s cake, Babel broke through an off-side trap late on and he barely got it past the despairing Burnley goalie when facing a one-on-one. The game and Burnley’s season was over. The tally at the end of the match read Burnley’s 12 attempts to Liverpool’s 12 attempts, with 10 of the latter on target. The 12 attempts by Burnley showed that they did try, but just perhaps lacked sufficient quality at both ends of the pitch.

With the other results, this leaves the 4th-place race looking like this:

Team P GD Points
Tottenham 35 +26 64
Aston Villa 36 +16 64
Man City 35 +27 63
Liverpool 36 +28 62

Very tight, and with Man City having to play both Tottenham and Aston Villa, it could go any way. Liverpool only have an outside chance of getting 4th and will need to beat Chelsea as well as relying on the results going their way in other matches. That may be too many miracles to ask for.

Meanwhile, in the title race, Chelsea are just 1 point ahead of Man Utd, so if we do beat Chelsea, we have the hard-to-swallow vista of potential giving Man Utd a title, and the 19th one at that!

Time to pray perhaps …..
