Right I've got a 100% thread starting/games winning Ratio.

Benfica in Lisbon ARE beatable!! FACT

We've got to watch out for Saviola as he's got afaik a goal every 2 games at this time.

But, if Rafa leaves the shakles off the team as he did today i think we should beat them.

Team should be the same team that started today with Benayoun on in place of Maxi.

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Insua
Mascherano
Benayoun Gerrard Babel
Kuyt Torres
or

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Insua
Mascherano
Kuyt Gerrard Babel
Torres Ngog

but alas i think it'll be

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Insua
Mascherano
Lucas
Kuyt Gerrard Babel
Torres

A win is a win and i would take a 1-0 win, but preferable put Benfica away in the first leg!!!

2 threads!!

Your keen... :)

Anyway, Im in agreement with you, it all depends on what Reds team shows up in Lisbon however, Ive a feeling Lucas will start alongside Mash for this, hopefully Im wrong as Gerrard alongside Mash can be so effective, Gerrards runs from deep today reminded me of him in his early years with us as a CM.

I really hope that Rafa and the players dont undersestimate Benfica like it seems a lot of our fans I've been talking to are, talking about the semis and Hamburg already.

Watched them twice against Everton (ok poor opposition) but they took them apart both games. Will need to play Masch and Lucas to stop the likes of Aimar, Di Maria and Ramires getting around Saviola and Cardozo up top.

Would take a score draw in Lisbon and then hopefully a big European night at Anfield to make up for the disaster night against them in 2005/6 season.

But fcuk it we are playing better recently and I have faith in Rafa and the lads to do a professional job.

Benfica are a good solid tough team, depsite what some people seem to think. They are unbeaten in their last 25 games in all competitions.

They are top of the Portugese League by 6 points with 6 games to go. Their record in the League is as follows :

Pld: 24; Won 19; Drew 4; Lost 1; For 61; Against 12;

An impressive record no matter what League you are in.

They won their equivalent of the League cup last week beating Porto 3-0 in the final, having beaten Sporting (away) 3-1 in the semis.

They go with the little and large partnership upfront in Saviola and Cardozo (6ft4) and Cardozo is top scorer in the League this season and with his height he will cause problems but can also shoot and also takes some of their free-kicks.

In Angel Di Maria they have one of the best left wingers in the world who will cause us problems. He is apparently being chased by Chelsea and the Mancs among others and is going to cost at least €20 million and probably more if he has a good World Cup. He would solve our never ending left wing problems.

They also have Pablo Aimar who plays behind the front two pulling the strings and on his day he can be extremely effective.

I think Rafa will go with Dirk on the right to help Johnson out with Di Maria and will go with Lucas & Masch in the middle with one of them picking up Aimar.

The link below shows our record against Benfica

http://www.footymad.net/head-to-head-statistics/?teama=342&teamb=923

A score draw over there will be a very good result in my opinion and take them at Anfield. A win would be a fantastic result!

Yeah I think we definately need to score. Rocco's team above looks most likely, especially with Maxi cup-tied. Might be Benny for Babel but apart from that it picks itself

I'll settle for us losing by a single goal. If we managr to knock an away goal it would be brilliant. Benfica are in insane form this season. Lost only about 3 games in all competitions, running away with the league and won their League Cup beating Porto, of all teams, 3-0.

Can go either Lucas and Masch in midfield to stop them playing their brilliant passing game or we can go Gerrard and Masch, putting them on the backfoot and attacking from the off. Only problem is their forwards and wingers are quite pacy and we could get caught out.

Be very careful about what you wish for. That was the result 4 years ago in Lisbon.

It is very important that some key players watch their discipline on Thursday night because if either of Torres, Mascherano or Insua get booked they would not be eligible for the 2nd leg.

This will be such a difficult match but one that will stand us in such good stead coming into the business part of the season. Benfica are a good team who would be a match for the best teams in Europe. They have such a strong midfield and dangerous strikers we will need to be at our absolute best to get a result.

Our problems this season have mainly been on the road so we'll need a good team performance. Unfortunately we have rarely seen a good team performance this season. Even when we have won there have been questions over several players and performances. We have a real problem with our left side. Insua is nowhere near the standard of Evra, Cole, Clinchy, Bridge and Bale and we need to sort this in the summer. Babel even with more game time has been poor. He had so much ball against Sunderland and delivered no end product. He spends so much time running down blind alleys and into the opposition right back. This has proved our downfall and achilles heel so often this season. Injuries to Aurelio, poor signings in Dossena, petulance from Riera and injuries to Benayoun have contributed.

In this game you are only as good as your worse player and too often this season it has been just that. The Man Utd game was the typical result and performance from us. We were not a whole lot better or worse than Utd but they did there homework attacked our left side and got there two goals from there. Anyway we have no other options down the left side and will have to relay on Babel and Insua. I think Insua has potential but due to the difficulties the team has had this season he has suffered especially after a good start. I think Babel has everything but for whatever reason it just hasn't worked for him in the PL.

To get a performance at benfica we need to play the way we have become famous for. Very tight at the back, solid through the middle and superb on the break. I think we'll have the usual back five in Riena, Johnson, Carra, Agger and Insua. I don't think we can afford to play an expansive and open game so for that reason it'll be Lucas and Mascherano in the middle. Gerrard will play in behind Torres with an industrious Kuyt down the right. That leaves that problematic left side and it is a toss up between Babel and Benayoun. I think Benayoun may give us more going both ways and for that reason I play him from the off.

I think a score draw or even a defeat by the odd goal with an away goal scored would be a great result. If we keep it tight away I fancy us turning anyone over at Anfield on a big European night. Wouldn't it be great to see Babel, Benayoun or Kuyt come off with a man of the match performance. Our recent results have shown good progress at an important time so I am quietly confident.:D

Reckon this could be the hardest game we have left this season including the chav game. Need to score an away goal in the first leg no matter what happens. this will allow us to be more creative in the home game.
If there striker is a big lad im assuming he is an areal treath so stick in nick the greek to rough him up.
Would pick two totally different sides for both games.

Think ths is the best time to play Birmingham, they have droped of a bit loosing 2 and drawing 2 from their last four. and they havent realy got much to play for safe in mid table with no european chance.

Nice read .....

Hi guys!

I've been about to post here for some time now but have been avoiding it. The same way I have avoided post in serbenfiquista.com about the Vs Liverpool thread.

I became a fan of Liverpool when I first went to Anfield on March 8th, 2006 for the Liverpool - Benfica champions league match. I didn't support Liverpool at all before (was a stupid manc)... However, that day changed the way I see football and, indeed, my life. I understood the difference between being a suportter (like you are) and being a fan. I understood why you shall always be there for your team even in the very worst moments (like that one was for you). I understood why the sentence: "Tomorrow? No way, Liverpool is playing" makes sense. My teams, Benfica and Liverpool have, since then, been the love of my life.

This said, I will not watch the match tomorrow. The first Benfica match I won't watch this season. The second or third Liverpool match I won't watch this season. Both teams hold exactly 50% of my heart and I simply cannot watch it. I will be sad with every outcome... So, although you have made my love for Benfica explode, the love I gained for Liverpool that night and the immense respect for you all, make me say Liverpool is, ALSO, the team I support in every occasion.

Why do I love this club so much? Because of You. Because of Rafa. Because of David Moores (a shame he's gone). Because of Pepe, Carra, Agger, Masch, Steve G, Nando. Because of Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso, Bellamy, Monster Sissoko, Pako Ayestaran. Because of Bill Shankly. Because of Anfield. Because of the Kop. Because of the Anfield Gates. Because of the 96. Because of YNWA. Because of Luis goal against Chelsea. Because of Istanbul. Because of the Gerrard final. Because of Agger's goal against Chelsea. Because of Dossena's goal in Old Trafford. Because of RAWK.

As some insights for you, Benfica is doing a wonder season. Jorge Jesus is an amazing coach who had done a great job in his previous smaller teams and is confirming he knows a lot about football in Benfica.
The club has renewed the conquer of League Cup two weeks ago (3-0 vs Porto), is 6 points clear of 2nd place Braga and 11 points clear of Porto with 6 matches to go, has the 2nd best attack in Europe (2nd best to Ajax, not sure about this), the best defense in Europe (not sure about this) and the football played is imense. Benfica have also won most matches in Europe this season than any other team I believe. Yes, Everton are scum, but being defeated 5-0 and 2-0 is a good indication that Benfica is doing well this season.
Benfica will most likely start with:

--------------------------------------- Quim ---------------------------------------
Maxi Pereira --------- Luisão ---------------- David Luiz ------ F. Coentrão
--------------------------------- Javi Garcia --------------------------------------
--------------- Ramires ----------------------------------------------- Di Maria -
--------------------------------- Pablo Aimar--------------------------------------
------------------- Javier Saviola --------------- Cardozo ---------------------

Quim (12) - One of the best portuguese GK, however not one of the best in Europe/world at the moment. Torres has the skill to score to Quim under many occasions.

Maxi Pereira (14) - Play's in Uruguai starting 11. A warrior, who fights a lot and lasts 90 minutes at high-revs. Very iconsistent in defense, dangerous but usually cautious under attacking positions. He's a bit slow, so Babel would be a bit more dangerous than Yossi I believe.

Luisão (4) - Brazil 3rd center back. Rock solid. Only speed can overtake him. Extremely dangerous in set pieces (score once last weekend).

David Luiz (23) - Wonder kid. Perfect complement to Luisão as he's very fast. One of the most technically gifted central backs in the world. Weekenesses: Sometimes lacks concentration and usually moves up in the pitch a lot which can create a dangerous situation when Benfica looses the ball.

Fábio Coentrão (16) - Left winger that Jorge Jesus has adapted to left back. He's defensive skills are improving a lot, but are still not perfect. Usually Di Maria doesn't help him as much as Ramires in the right side, meaning that if he has to face Kuyt and Johnson at the same time, he'll struggle.

Javi Garcia (6) - Perfect defensive midfielder (like Mascherano). He's perfect compensating David Luiz when the CB attacks and compensating Maxi Pereira and Fábio Coentrão. Most important player in Benfica's tactic. Dangerous in set pieces. No weekenesses from Javi Garcia, he's just not 100% fit perhaps, he's getting back to his best progressively.

Ramires ( - Plays in Dunga's Brazil starting 11. Like Garcia, a huge team player, he's everywhere. Looks phisically weak, and he's a bit, but fights for every ball. May be a bit tired given that he was playing in Brazil last season and didn't enjoy vacations.

Di Maria (20) - Plays in Maradona's Argentina 11. Well, he's a magician, you can expect anything from him. Honestly, if Manchester United signs this guy, I'm extremely affraid is a new Cristiano Ronaldo. Weeknesses: Shooting and sometimes defensive help. He may show up in front of Reina once or twice and miss the target

Pablo Aimar (10) - Another magician, sometimes called by Maradona. His passing is world class. Perfect combination with Javier Saviola, can make a goal chance out of nowhere. Weekenesses: Shooting. May not last 90 minutes (although having been rested quite a lot recently).

Javier Saviola (30) - Can score the most amazing goals anytime. Like Maxi Pereira, fights 90 minutes at high-revs and will back Liverpool center backs and Mascherano suffer. He helps a lot midfieldiers and he's a perfect help for Cardozo. Weekeness: By far in the worst moment of the season.

Oscar Cardozo (7) - Portuguese top scorer. Europa League 2nd top scorer (to Claudio Pizzaro). Paraguai starting 11. Like Crouch, he's tall but plays very well with his feet (the left one mostly). Give him a goal chance (or not even a goal chance) and most likely Pepe will not save you. He just keeps scoring and scoring... He's not gifted like Torres, he's more of a Peter Crouch style but more complete and scoring much more goals.

If this game was in February or before, Benfica would win easily (sorry guys). However, currently with Johnson, Gerrard and Torres, Liverpool is up to Benfica. I still consider that Benfica is playing clearly better at the moment, but I'm giving it 50-50 for the draw.

I hope you enjoy the game tomorrow and I hope you can make it to Anfield next week and drink some pints with the Benfica supporters that will be there.

Benfica and Liverpool are brothers!

Cheers

[/B]

He was a Manc in 05 yet loves us because of Istanbul, we have enough of his type already. Lets hammer these greasy *******s.

This was in today's article about the match tonight at the end .....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/apr/01/liverpool-benfica-europa-league

Milan Jovanovic, meanwhile, has confirmed he will complete a free transfer from Standard Liège to Liverpool once a work permit has been issued at the end of this season. The Serbian striker agreed the move and personal terms in January but has yet to finalise the transfer. He said yesterday: "For me, it's sorted. The only thing is that my work permit is not yet in order. But I have until June to get it. I'm at ease. Next season I will play at Liverpool

We're a better side than what we were in 2006, it will be an intriguing game...

Not a chance lad, bar Torres the 2006 team was way better and to say the current team is better is a ridiculous statement, From October 1st 2005 we got more points in the league than the eventual Champions Chelsea, we had a very poor start thats what cost us challeging for the league, we won the FA cup that year, and Gerrard by a mile was the best player in the country.

Richie after loose to Benfica at Anfield in 2006 a few days later Liverpool lost to Arsenal on the 12/03/2006 and at that time they were 20 points behind Chelsea and finished 9 points behind Chelsea.

They won the remaining 9 games.

The reason I have such a memory of this Arsenal match was because I was watching it in a 24hour casino in Christchurch.

Whats done is done and now Insua is going to need so much more cover on the left, any time he's on the ball he looks for someone down the left, with nobody there it may aswell be giving the ball back to benfica. As for him being suspended I can't remember Agger ever playing left back but would be confident with him there and the Greek and Carra at the centre.

As for the sendin off, very soft, as for babel gettin involved....luisao went towards babel after he hacked torres to the floor, shouting at him, and even tho the ref got between the 2 of them luisao kept pushing the ref back to get to babbel, ryan was backing away the whole time, even when he put his hands up to luisao's mouth. I've seen Agger play left back a couple of times. Class act and i would'nt worry about him there. Then again i'd rather see Torres at left back rather than Insua. I feel sorry for Insua because given time he might be a decent player but unfortunatly not good enough for us at present.

A yellow wud have done.

Let's forget the rules of the game:rolleyes:

[QUOTE=JMurray#8;320049]Ok don't agree with the idiocy of what Babel did, especially inches from the ref but he's gonna get a lot more stick because it's him. Say if Torres got up and did the same to luisao and gets a red all the comments would be about it never being a red. QUOTE]

Agree mate seems alot fans likes to see Babel fail. I really don't even say that was yellow, nothing worse than was it Fletcher/Carrick did few weeks back. HandBags

Loved this quote on BBC

From Vermaelen is harder than rambo on 606: "Babel deserved a red. He also deserved a medal. That Luisao bloke is a monster."

Lads your missing the point! Babbel got involved when he should have stayed out of it, and then sticks his hand in his face twice in front of the ref!! Come on you can't do that!! He's a fcuking idiot for getting involved!

Spot on mark what an ****ing idiot for getting involved when it had nothing to do with him the ref was there to sort the benfica player out
