What do you guys think of this whole concept...?I have been keeping an eye on it for a while and I think it will be very a interesting 'experiment'.The founder was on off the ball last night and these lads put a lot of time and effort into this project.

Fans' community website MyFootballClub has agreed a deal to take over Blue Square Premier outfit Ebbsfleet United.

The 20,000 MyFootballClub members have each paid £35 to provide a £700,000 takeover pot and they will all own an equal share in the club.

Members will have a vote on transfers as well as player selection and all major decisions.

"We are united in believing this is a great opportunity," Ebbsfleet chairman Jason Botley told BBC Sport.

"This extra finance and support will enable our club to progress."

The deal is expected to be completed in a few weeks after a due diligence process and the website will purchase a 51% controlling stake, while also having the option to buy the club outright in the future.

The takeover is a landmark for English football, given the website's stated intention of involving the members so radically in the running of the club, particularly with team selection.

Picking 11 players and formations isn't a precise science

Ebbsfleet boss Liam Daish

After the takeover goes through the current board will stay in place, as will manager Liam Daish, although his title will change to head coach.

Daish insisted that he was happy for fans to have an input on team matters.

"Picking 11 players and formations isn't a precise science and luck often plays its part," stated the Ebbsfleet boss.

"During and after matches, Ebbsfleet supporters often give me their opinion on which players should or shouldn't start games. Now they can have their say.

"My job won't change that much. As a club, we'll select the starting 11 players and formation together.

"But just as before, what goes on at the training ground and in the dressing room on the day of the match is down to me.

"It's the supporters' money that finances this club and pays my wages and those of the players.

"So there's a good argument for them having a say in what players they want to see."

Ebbsfleet were formerly Gravesend and Northfleet but the club's name was changed in May in a bid to tap into the regeneration of the area.

They are currently ninth in the Blue Square Premier, six points off a play-off place for entry to the Football League.

Ebbsfleet United boss Liam Daish
Daish played for Portsmouth, Birmingham and Coventry and has five caps for the Republic of Ireland

And Ebbsfleet's push for a spot in League Two will receive a boost as some of the funds raised by MyFootballClub members will be available in the January transfer window.

MyFootballClub members will be given the option to vote on who the club should buy.

Daish added that he was fully behind the radical model for the club.

"We all agree we need something extra to take us to the next step," he said.

"As a football fan, I think the MyFootballClub idea is fantastic.

"As the coach, I look forward to the challenge of working with thousands of members to produce a winning team.

"My assistant Alan Kimble and myself are 100% committed to making this work."

Since the website's launch in April, 50,000 members have signed up, with 20,000 of those paying the registration fee.

The membership subscription is paid annually so new members can join and become owners at any time, adding to the club's finances.

MyFootballClub was approached by nine clubs and looked into seven of those before opting to take over Ebbsfleet.

The Financial Services Authority has approved the setting up of the MyFootballClub Trust to safeguard members' interests in the eventuality of the club running into financial difficulties.

"The MyFootballClub ownership model is an innovative way of funding a lower league club," said Dan Jones, partner at Deloitte and editor of the Annual Review of Football Finance.

"Reports of having raised over £700,000 in 11 weeks suggests it is viable too.

"Deloitte has been following its progress with interest and we're now looking forward to offering our experience in football finance to assist with advice and guidance during the due diligence process."

MyFootballClub creator Will Brooks added: "We hope that MyFootballClub members and Ebbsfleet supporters will join forces and make the football club more sustainable and successful."

Jessica McQueen, Ebbsfleet United Supporters' Trust chair commented: "Being a Trust, our members understand the MyFootballClub concept immediately.

"We very much look forward to working with the MyFootballClub members for the benefit of Ebbsfleet United."

It certainly is a unique concept - have been keeping an eye to it myself. Its a bit mad to claim that you are part owner of a club, especially if they get into the football league at some stage. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the club can be bought out for a fixed price at any stage - has anyone else heard about this? What would that mean for the 20,000 who have alread paid up, is that the end of the project for them or do they get any say in the sale of the club?

Great story ... sadly, I think it will be quite a while before IrishKop.com is big enough to buy out the Yanks at our club ;) :D

I think its a bit of a joke myself.

Picking a team and tactics by having an online poll is a bit daft.

They dont need a manager anymore just someone to sit in front of a laptop on the bench.

I wonder how the current fans of Ebbsfleet feel, can't be too impressed I imagine.

This was put to the owner on NewsTalk the other night,as far as he was concerned the manager will be an integral part of the system. The manager will put up his training reports for the members to see,he will suggest transfer targets and once a game kicks of he is in total control.

Could you imagine if we had to pick a team via contribution to Irishkop...jaysus I'd say we'd get a team on the park once every ten years or so:p

ROFL :D :D :D

Simple solution - we put all the players on a vote, deadline for votes is 2 days before each game ... top 11 play, with close runners up as subs etc ;)

Now can we buy out the Yanks ? ;) :D

The pros and cons of the deal...a post by a EUFC supporter.

The MyFootballClub scenario still seems "mind-boggling" to me:

Pro's

1) The money MyFootballClub brings with it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Fleet to move forward, with the kind of investment most Fleet Fans would never have dreamed of. In the modern game money talks.

2) If every true Fleet Fan signs up to MyFootballClub then they will have a greater say in how the Club was run then under the current regime. Fact: The current Board of Directors do NOT listen to the fans as demonstrated by both the Re-naming and the MyFootballClub episodes where consultation was non-existant.

3) MyFootballClub offers fans the potential to revert the Club's name back to "Gravesend and Northfleet F.C."

4) MyFootballClub will raise the profile of the Club on a national scale, as demonstrated by the headline news on the BBC website and the article in the Daily Mail. Even when the "hype" dies down the Club will still receive far more publicity than is currently the case.

5) Most importantly, MyFootballClub's huge media exposure will encourage the local population of Gravesham to attend games, especially once a "bit of money" gets thrown at the playing squad. The Club will no longer be seen as a "little non-league Club" by the locals but rather a Club going places. With MyFootballClub's backing, Gillingham are unlikely to remain the biggest team in Kent for long.

6) MyFootballClub may well appoint a decent PR Manager and choose to advertise games more widely in the local press.

7) MyFootballClub will have the financial clout to look at ways to improve the current fanbase, in terms of appointing a full-time community officer to visit local schools and give away free tickets etc to schools.

8) MyFootballClub will be able pay higher wages (at least short term), which in turn should attract better players and improve the quality of football on offer at stonebridge road.

9) MyFootballClub offers massive commercial gains for the Football Club in terms of merchandising, sponsorship etc.

10) MyFootballClub with its huge potential to generate commercial sponsorship represents the Clubs most realistic chance of getting a new stadium. Progress on this appears to be non-existant.

11) MyFootballClub offers the opportunity to wipe-out the current debts of the football Club that are reported to be 350K? How else is this debt going to be repaid - the Club may well go bankrupt soon with dwindling crowds and a squad of 22 full-time players unless MyFootballClub is welcomed.

12) If the MyFootballClub bubble bursts then its my understanding the Football Club will be unaffected.

13) MyFootballClub may be an innovotive idea that might just work!

Cons:

1) Can 20,000 plus fans really manage team lineups and tactics?

2) Liam Daish is now under the same pressure as most Premiership Managers. Fans are fickle and while 1000 Fleet Fans can accept 3 losses in a row, 20,000 plus internet users can't.

On the other hand if Liam no longer picks the team can he be sacked?

3) Replacement managers are likely to be high profile managers that may have little or no experience of the non-league scene. Potential big names might include Ron Atkinson or even Paul Gascoigne, whose experiences at Kettering Town were less than impressive.

4) Existing promising "young" players such as Luke Moore or other promising young non-league players may be discarded in favour of ageing League Professionals whose name people may recognise.

5) Our current team are playing for their livelihoods. A few losses between now and the January transfer window could result in themselves having to find new employers unless they are under contract till the end of the season.

6) The Football Club is now a "Franchise" football Club but you could argue this was the case as soon as the name was changed to Ebbsfleet F.C. Don't blame MyFootballClub for Ebbsfleet being a franchise club - it already is!

7) The Football Club is being used as a "guinea pig". Effectively
MyFootballClub is an experiment that no-one knows the outcome of until its done for the first time.

My only confession is that since the name change, I've not attended any games but continue to pay into the Fleet Trust. Before anyone starts giving me grief, this decision was made on the grounds I honestly felt I could not support a Board that had treated its fanbase so poorly on such an issue.

However, this detachment has perhaps helped me see the wider picture that MyFootballClub potentially offers the Club.

The question Fleet Fans need to ask themselves is - Do you want to remain a "non-league" Club or do you want to take a chance, with the Club you love and give it a once in a lifetime opportunity of rising through the Football League Pyramid?

Its a question I'm unable to answer, seeing as the Club I loved was lost with the name change, so I've nothing to lose either way.

Finally I would urge the MyFootballClub site to communicate with the Fleet Fans directly. Have some "glamour birds" handing out a questionaire at matchdays, requesting feedback on a range of issues such as the fans attitude to the Board, the re-naming, why crowds are low, the style of football being played and their views on the MyFootballClub takeover. I'm sure the fans are desperate to be listened to for a change.

A word of advice - organise this through MyFootballClub rather than the Club and make it easy for fans to return the questionaires directly to MyFootballClub or its representatives. Also give out pens to fans on matchday so they can complete the forms then and there and make it clear where they need to return the questionaires too.

If MyFootballClub is serious about buying the Club then lets see you prove it by communicating directly with the fans. Directors may hold the financial stake in the Club but without the fans you have no football club. LISTEN to what the Fleet fans have to say and you may well find they slowly embrace the MyFootballClub notion.

Well thats the essential idea isn't it. You know its so crazy it just might work. I signed up for it months back but when it was time to pay the dosh I didn't but might yet now its moving. Its tapping into the whole championship manager, fantasy football, score prediction leagues, console footie games culture allied with heavy internet use for football related topics. There's a whole footie addicted internet community out there (and we're part of it by the way !). Yesterday after England were defeated I don't know how many screens in work had football365 on them.

Its thinking out of the box, innovative and on the kinda scale that could actually make a difference to a club at that level. If they got into league football you'd have rare momentum and even national interest behind them. At least a spark to increase attendances. Only thing is their board seems a bit dodge going by what the fan wrote but if they communicated with fans directly they could be embraced rather than viewed suspicously.

Well its definitely interesting. I could seriously see myself getting more enjoyment at essentially playing fantasy footie for real for 35 pounds a year than on a website or game console. I could imagine looking out for the result on a Saturday just the way fellas are looking for scorers and cleansheets in matches because of FF points (it was always for betting slips before !)

Interesting times.......

P.S. Maybe the real socialist "fan ownership" model was already implemented with the Wimbledon offshoot that time

We could have a 6 aside team in one of the many Dublin astro leagues mind you, good advertising as well.

Might not be such a bad idea acutally, surely you'd find a squad of at least 10 lads from this site and living around the Dublin area who'd be up for that. Maybe wait til it gets a bit warmer though...
