LIVERPOOL midfielder Alberto Aquilani missed training at Melwood today after suffering from a stomach upset.

The Italian turned in arguably his finest performance in a Red shirt to date when scoring his first goal for the club in Monday's 4-1 Premier League win over Portsmouth but was unable to take part in this morning's preparations ahead of the Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Lille.

The club are hopeful that Aquilani will be available for Thursday night's clash ar Anfield, where the Reds must overcome a one-goal deficit to progress to the last eight of the competition.

If we play 80% as well as we did the other night, Lille will not stand a hope in hell.

Im going for a repeat performance spurred on a by a louder Anfield this time.
Have a feeling Lucas may start ahead of Mash in this game.

3-0 on the night, thank you!

Just did a little bit of checking on the Uefa website. Mascherano disciplinary record from the CL games still carries over so if he is booked he would be out of the next game. (BTW I believe that there will be more games.)

The simple solution is to drop Stevie back alongside Mash.
Babel & Maxi on the wings, with Yossi playing in the hole.
Another option is to play both Kuyt & Torres up top together, we need to win, so let them worry about us, they'll be shitting themselves after watching the Monday night match.

If Liverpool play this match in a tempo only played in the PL we will beat these lot easily. Lille are a good French side but should be no match for a Liverpool team on form. I just hope we get at them early and pinch an early goal. If we play the slow, deliberate European style we may find ourselves at 0-0 after 70mins and that's when the problems set in. We don't want a nervous last 10mins and to go out on an away goal. I to would like to see Benayoun replace Kuyt as he offers more in attack than Kuyt. This will leave Kuyt fresh after a 2 week break and ready to come back in against Man U where his defensive qualities and workload will be needed.

Need to have another totaly attack minded game.
Go out on full steam looking for that early goal and keep at them.
There is no good reason to go back to two defensive midfielders and no go reason why we cant beat this lot.

This game is there for us if we go into it in the right frame of mind.Monday night has helped confidence levels surely.Progression to the next stage and a good solid performance against in truth an average Lille side will set us up nicely for our showdown with the mancs.Next 2 games are huge in relation to our chances of a silver lining on what has been a cloudy season.

If Aqua is out tonight & Maxi is cup tied the Riera on the left & Babel on the right with Stevie dropping back & Yossi playing in the hole.

I still dont see any point in Lucas playing when we need to go attack lille from the off.

With Riera doing himself no favours in the media today it will more than likely be Kuyt on the right or behind Nando & either Babel or Yossi out wide.

If Aquaman is fit enough to start, we need goals so we'd be better off getting Stevie as far up the pitch as possible. I agree, Id go 4-4-2 if he is no fit, with Kuyt up top. Lets call a spade a spade though- that Pomepy team was probibly one of the worst teams to play in the premiership ever ... cant see them shitting themselves. They'll play counter attack football, very Italian esq., if we dont end up going for them from the off, it will be up to us to be patient and make sure to take our chances.

Can see Lucas being recalled tonight. I reckon the line-up something like this: Reina, Johnson, Carra, Agger, Insua, Masch, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Yossi, Torres.

But of course nobody can second guess Rafa's tactics. It's the fun of the pre match build up to guess the team!

Personally would like to see something like: Reina, Johnson, Carra, Agger, Insua, Masch, Aqua (if fit!), Kuyt, Gerrard, Babel, Torres. But everyone is a manager huh...

Started the game well.

Lucas has made some great forward runs, must have taken note of Aquaman Monday night, regardless, good to see him actually affect the game for a change.

Insua looks good going forward, but by christ his sense of positioning is absolutely terrible. He lacks pace, therefore he needs to put himself in the right place to make up for it, but h just doesnt. Yellow card was a joke in fairness, and made one very good run into their area. Defensively its more of the same from him unfortunately.

Reina has been a spectator for the most part, and he didnt know much about Hazards shot either, came off his noggin, we were lucky there, but it was good play by the lad to get the chance in the first place from a long ball.

Kuyt isnt up to much, neither is Johnson. Most of our good play has been down the left wing through Babels directness.
Nando doesnt look as sharp as Monday, but there are goals for him tonight.

And in addition to Monday, Gerrard has shown exactly why he remains our captain. Workrate and passion to get the ball ahs been immense tonight.

Still need another to safely get through here I think.

3-0 Reds

Fckin relief. I thought one of their players were in at the back post seconds earlier.

Torres is the difference. Had he been fit all season, we would be in CL 1/4s and not the Europa League.

Good win in the end, unconvincing second half but we're getting back into the winning habit at the right time of the season.

The mancs on the weekend, no need for any motivation there!!

How did Kuyt see the full game out? Thought he was shocking tonight. Gave the ball away so many times it was unreal.

Want very impressed at all last night, I think it shone a painful light on kuyt last night! He's disasterous at the moment, can't seem to do anything right, did well to get away with a foul to help set up the third!

Thought Lucas and Masch both played well but after aquamans heroics it's going to take a lot of persuading to have me believe that these two should ever start together!

Liverpool 3 Lille 0 (agg: 3-1)
Gerrard 9 pen
Torres 49, 90

This was a good performance for Liverpool. Most players played well plus with effort and some passion. The goals were well made and well taken, and whilst the spectre of Lille stealing an away goal came close a couple of times, Liverpool were deserving winners of the match and the tie.

Benitez lined up Liverpool in his standard 4-2-3-1 formation. Aquilani was out due to a runny nose, Maxi was cup-tied, and Riera was suspended for voicing his opinion in public, so there were starts for Babel, Lucas and Kuyt.

———— Reina ————
Johnson - Carra - Agger – Insua
--------- Lucas - Masch ----
Kuyt –– Gerrard –– Babel
——––––– Torres———

Benayoun came on for Babel on 90 mins and there were stoppage time run-outs for Kyrgiakos and N’Gog.

Liverpool had the brighter start and when Lucas was felled after a dazzling run, the resulting penalty tucked away by Gerrard gave Liverpool a good early goal to settle the worst of the nerves. Liverpool were passing the ball well, and Agger came close from a header.

Liverpool had the better of the play for the first 30 mins but only had one goal to show for it. Then the young duke of Hazard broke into the box but shot straight at Reina as he saved it with his head. A let-off for Liverpool somewhat as an away goal then could have changed attitudes and confidence, etc.

Liverpool responded from that close shave with two close efforts from Agger and Torres, although Lille were in the ascendancy as the half drew to a close.

But Liverpool got another confidence boost early in the 2nd half with a goal from Torres. A long ball move saw Torres master control of the ball before clinically chipping their keeper. Torres has got back to match sharpness it would seem which will surely help Liverpool in their tasks as the season runs to a close, as long as he can stay fit and avoid injury or niggles.

But even at 2-0, Liverpool perhaps gave Lille too much of the ball and they contrived a chance that just went over the bar. A 2nd warning for Liverpool that this tie was still in the balance. Benayoun was thrown into the fray to try and change things. Kuyt who was not having one of his better games then got in a couple of shots and could have settled things, but it took another finish from Torres as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes to settle it after good work from Stevie G. And it brought broad smiles to all, players and fans alike. The tallies at the end of the match read Liverpool’s 18 attempts to Lille’s 7.

It was a deserved result, and whilst there are clearly frailties remaining, this victory may help the players continue to improve and put in a good run. There is a chance of Europa Cup success but it must still be an outside chance given the propensity for this team to capitulate. The league run is also on tenderhooks, and Villa won during the week at Wigan keeping pressure up.

Next up is the league and the match at Man Utd on Sunday. Clearly the players wont need any motivation for this derby-like clash, yet Man Utd have been licking their wounds in recent seasons against us and will fancy their chances. The players will need to be at their best and keep their game up and the tempo even if they should go behind. That will be a tough test for this team who are by no means ‘cured’ of this season’s malaise. Liverpool may not be a sinking ship, but there are icebergs ahead ….
