At least 18 people were killed and 56 injured in a head-on collision between two trains on the outskirts of Brussels - after one apparently passed through a red light. The front of one carriage was ripped off and several others were turned onto their side by the force of the impact. Overhead power cables were brought down as two carriages jacknifed, severely disrupting train services across Western Europe. At least 18 people are known to have died. An official said one of the trains "apparently did not heed a stop light". The accident happened in light snow outside the station at Buizingen, nine miles southwest of the Belgian capital, at 8.30am. One train was apparently heading from Quievrain to Liege and the other from Leuven to Braine-le-Comte. Initial reports said 20 people were killed. The more seriously hurt were taken to hospital while others were treated at a nearby sports complex. Scene of the train crash An inquiry has begun to find out exactly what went wrong. Photo: CDRIK "It was a nightmare," one passenger, 47-year-old Christian Wampach, told reporters. "We were thrown about for about 15 seconds. "There were a number of people injured in my car (the third) but I think all the dead were in the first car." TV images from the scene showed rescuers pulling the wounded from a carriage that had tipped onto its side. Other emergency officials were seen rushing victims on stretchers along the tracks. "When we came out we saw dead bodies lying next to the tracks, some mutilated," said Patricia Lallemand, 40, who was unhurt. A spokesman for Belgian National Railways said an investigation had been launched to find out the cause of the crash. All Eurostar trains between Brussels and London have been cancelled for the rest of the day. http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Wo...led_In_Head-On_Rush_Hour_Collision_In_Belgium Terrible news today..
