Cant see this working. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/feb/14/premier-league-play-off-champions-league
how would it ruin the league? needs a 14-6 majority to be passed the "big 4" better make some friends
Depending on how things pan out for us in the next few months this could be something that could save our club. If we don't get new investment then it's quite possible that we'll regularly be fighting for 4th place and if we finish 5th we'd be very grateful of this opportunity.
The fight would be on to finish in the top 7 not 4 as there would be no advantage in finishing above 7th. would see the league deteriorating competitively as teams would now be aiming for a lower position as the top 3 spots are pretty much always tied up at this stage of the season. Players do not have the same passion and committment as the fans whether we like it or not.
It they were to do it right. The team that finished 4th would play the team that finished 7th and 4th place team would have home advantage for the second leg. That should be enough incentive to finish above 7th place and advantage enough for the team that finishes 4th. If anything I think it would make the league more competitive. Apart from the big 4/5 all the others know realisticially that they'll probably never play Champions League football. This would give them real hope and they'd fight for every single point even if the season was coming to an end.
You could also argue that it would make the league more competitive as teams such as Sunderland, West Ham, Stoke, etc would be looking to bring in better and better players in the hope that they could push for an elusive 7th spot and set up a cup competition in an attempt to get into the Champions League. Too many games from mid April onwards are absolute rubbish and non-events as teams have already avoided relegation and can't get into Europe and players are already thinking of their summer holidays. Opening up the system so the top 7 have something to go for will see teams as far down as 12th in the league realistically fighting for something come mid April.
You may say good bye to the FA Cup if this ever happens. Utd said No so thats the end of that. EDIT: Bring in the same system for relegation. 2 down, next 4 in a league type playoff. Both must be passed or else things stay the same. Lets see how many vote for that.
maybe you're right but then again what would it do to the credibility of Champions league when a team finishing in 7th place could get into it?
In fairness its a bit of a farce that a 4th placed team is playing in the "Champions" league as it is.
I would be in favour of this. Don't know why liverpool are rejecting. Over next tranfer window Man Citys squad will be streets ahead on the pitch. Unless we get invstment then we will be battling with Arsenal for 4th.
i can see it happening coz i think most clubs outside of the big4 would vote for it coz realistically its their only chance of ever playing in the CL. i dont necessarily agree with it either - its like the promotion from the c'ship. i dont think a team that scraped into 7th in teh c'ship on the last day should get promoted after winning the playoffs over the team that finished 3rd after 46 games...but i can see teams like villa, everton, spurs, s'and etc all backing it. and as someone else rightly said, in ther next few seasons considering how crap our finances are and how weak our squad is we might eb damned happy of a chance of a play-off when the chavs and citeh contest teh title after spending a few hundred million every summer
Did anybody hear the interview of the young Ipswich lad who left the game, on Newstalk last week (Shane Supple http://www.irishkop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10967&highlight=shane). He was asked why he left the game at only 22 when he could have stayed and made a few bob. He said he was disillusioned with the game and the it wasn't what he thought it to be. He said there was very little team spirit with no mixing outside of work and players happy to see others injured as it cemented their place. Also he said that players were the same in the dressing room whether they won or lost but the thing that most surprised me was that he said that some players did no want to get into the play offs because it shortened their holidays and that if they got promoted to the premier league they might get transferred. Players were happy to remain the championship because success threatened their comfortable existence. I think this has crept into the game in the premiership as well due to the money and the length of the contracts.
Money racket. Will the final be in Wembley? No doubts the winners will get to go up the steps to collect a trophy as well!!!!!
heard it alright. I remember him leaving last year. Was weird to him say players were not interested in getting promoted as they would not be extended.
if this was passed, the race for fourth place wouldnt be a race anymore, and a lot of the passion involved in those games between contenders would be lost if a team knew that they were guaranteed of making these 'play-offs'. Its a bad thing imo
I think its a bad idea! Surely the team who's won enough points to finish fourth should go through? You could have a case of a team finishing 12 points off 4th yet still qualify? Not right imo
