View Full Version : Cheltenham 2010----Ante Post Bets

I'm not one for getting to involved in ante post punting as knowing ground conditions are absolutely crucial to whether horses will run never mind win come the festival. But looking through price lists and following the NH action over the last few months theres a couple of stand outs that are defo worth a few quid AP with the hope they make it safe and sound to Cheltenham for there engagements.
The current stand out value of the meeting for me is the 16 to back Rite Of Passage for the supreme novice hurdle. If Dunguib runs in the novice event well he will probably be only looking at place money because on form on last years bumper he has no chance of a form reversal with Dunguib. With the Champion hurdle becoming more and more open with each trial thats run i reckon Phillip Fentons hand will be swayed to go for the big one nad if he does the 30 to back Dunguib for it is going to be huge.
Rite of Passage has looked a total class act from day one and Dermot Weld has never hidden the fact the high esteem he holds him in.Bar a disappointing run in the Curragh back in May he hasnt put a foot wrong. He jumped brilliantly and cruised to a handy win today (despite been nearly carried off the track) over a very well regarded opponent in Grey Soldier.Probably his most impressive win though came on the flat were he demolished Donnas Palm in the 2m November Hcap at Leopardstown by 8l giving him 10lb,Donnas Palm today was beaten 4l by Champion Hurdle fav Solwhit off level weights.
With definite improvement to come, bar Dunguib i reckon theres nothing to touch him in the novice event,if Dunguib swerves and goes for the big one i guess that Welds runner will be no bigger than 3s on the day.
The other standout on the AP lists for me is the 5.6 to back Voler La Vedette in the David Nicholson mares hurdle.Looking through the expected runners it already looks like a 2 runner race.VLV trashed Go Native (in receipt of 8lbs) in a conditions event in Down Royal in November. The runner up has gone on to win 2 G1s since and is near top of most lists for the Champion hurdle.
While Go Native may not have been fully tuned up for the DR event it was still a smashing performance and shes gone on to a smooth success in a G2 mares event at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting. She has an outstanding chance in the mares only race at the festival and is a wrong price at 5.6 in my opinion.
Anyone else have any stand outs value wise for the festival let us in on them.
Was only thinking something very similar about RoP after the race yesterday. Was also impressed with Welds winner in the bumper on Sat. Looked very classy. Universal somthing or other it was called. Currently 12s with PP

Surely Dunguib will go for the Champion, he is favourite for it anyway!

Although maybe he is too young for it and they'll stick him in the novices and go for the champion in years to come, in fact that probably makes more sense and if he goes for the novices he wont be touched!

Rumours are that being so young he will go for the novice race which still leaves him many years in the champion.
There was rumour that mare is going for the champion though Ronan and i think pricewise in the post tipped her as an outsider for that.
Zaynar for me in the champion at present.

Few I will be getting Anti Post prices for in the incoming weeks are the following, fancies only,
Diamond Harry (RSA Chase) 8/1)
Mille Chief (Novices) 9/1)
Binocular (champion(8/1)
Master Minded 7/4

Just took the 9/4 with Ladbrokes on Denman in the Gold Cup after AP McCoy was confirmed. This horse should be ideally suited to McCoys style and I can see him galloping Kauto out the gate.

Mille Chief be backed down to 5/1 clear fav thank god took 10/1 just 2 weeks ago (see post above) have 20 e/w so could be earning good few pound there

Dunguib will defo be aimed for the Supreme Novices, Fenton said yesterday if he went for the Champion and jumped like that he would be well caught out. So 1st race at Chelt is where you will get all your money made to set you up properly with Dunguib a sure fire winner imo.

ha ha, gallop kauto out the gate? don't think so pal. have you not seen kauto star's cruising speed?
kauto star for me. simple fact is that cheltenham at that time of the year is more suited to kauto. if cheltenham were in november, then i'd probably side with denman.
it's up to harry findlay who rides denman, and AP were available to it was a no brainer. Sam Thomas will prob be riding something for tom george or venetia williams in that race. it's a 2 horse race really, and can't wait for it.

going by the attached link, here are my predictions for these races @ Cheltenham going by current form etc. -
http://www.paddypower.com/racing/cheltenham-betting
Champion hurdle - fairly wide open, and providing that dunguib doesn't run i am going for Go Native to be this years champion hurdler.
Supreme Novices - Dunguib.
Mares hurdle - don't know much about these, but i liked the look of Candy Creek last week.
RSA Chase - Pandorama shaped up really well last time out, and i think he can cause a minor surprise here.
World Hurdle - Big Bucks.
Triumph hurdle - stick my neck out with gordon elliott's Carlito Brigante since he won in good style for me yesterday.
Gold cup - Kauto Star.
the Arkle - Sizing Europe for me, captain cee bee's jumping is a major worry, esp around Chelters.
Cross country - enda bolger normally trains the winner of this race, going with Garde Champetre.
Champion chase - Big Zeb to turn master minded over.
the Ryanair - possibly the hardest race to call, tentative vote goes to alan king's Voy Por Ustedes.
what do you's think lads?

I think there stone raving mad keeping Dunguib to jump racing. He's an absolute machine and would easily be up to G1 cup races on the flat over 2 miles. He also looks a tailor made type for a tilt at the Melbourne cup.
Jack in the jumping lark Mr Fenton and get him on the flat!!!

Dunguib is a beast.
I'd take on Sizing Europe at Cheltenham, Master Minded loves the place.
And i'll be away for the Gold cup, need to find somewhere in Valencia to watch it!!!
Watched the Dunguib race last night. While he won very easy with alot in hand, his jump was very lacklustre to say the least. Don;t think I'd be tearing in at odds on

If Dunguib is a cert, dont miss Rite of Passage for the Neptune on Paddy's Day. I put it up a few weeks ago at 8s/7s. Now 4s generally, but still available at 5/1 in William Hill. Ive been told this is the race he will go for as they will not run it against Dunguib, and Dunguib wont go for the Champion.

Rites of Passage is in the Neptune too and supreme, and could run before Chelt, and maybe miss the festival, wait and see there for me for sure, Weld quoted in racing post today about it.
Dunguib's problem for me is hurdling in such a massive field could be a problem, good schooling and jumping he'll hack it.

If Denman is a pig of a horse where does that leave the hundreds of other staying chasers. The horse made a couple of mistakes and fell, sure Kauto has had wobbly jumps in the past too, no big deal.
I don't however understand the need to gloat though over people who have backed Denman ante-post of whom I was one. However whilst Kauto looks hard to oppose now I wouldn't write Denman off, and at 7/2 he is almost an each way bet to nothing.

It looks as though he COULD run in the bumper but its dependent on the ground so I wouldn't be backing him ante-post just in case. if he is confirmed a runner he could be vying with favouritism come the day of the race.
PAUL NICHOLLS could have the Weatherbys Champion Bumper within his grasp after owner John Hales had a change of heart about Newbury scorer Al Ferof.
In his post-race interview, Nicholls said that Al Ferof would be put away for an autumn hurdle campaign rather than face a rematch with second-placed Made In Time at Cheltenham.
However Hales, who bought the French bred five-year-old from Liz Doyle in the middle of January, has now put a trip to the Festival firmly on Al Ferof's agenda.
"John said to me before that he wanted to keep him for hurdling," said Nicholls.
"I think he went out last night, had a few drinks, slept on it and a lot of different advisors came out of the woodwork and gave their opinions and he thought, well yeah why not."
Saturday's ground was officially described as good to soft and Nicholls added that Al Ferof would not run at Cheltenham if the ground was too quick and reiterated his high-regard for the three-time winner.

How do you know its bull crap? I'm not saying it's gospel Just passing it on like but your post above is rude to be honest. Meade told your man off the record as he knows him. Perhaps Meade underselling his horse in he media would make sense but what benefit was there to down play his horses chances to someone he's know?

race Weapons Amnesty won last year on route to winning at
Cheltenham). The second and third have come out and won since,

with an opinion?Mullins could prob still send Quel Esprit to this race also,
which would be a worry.
Been given a tip in the same race as Paddsers tip - Finians Rainbow. Lad I know met Geraghty last week and asked him for a nag for the Festival and he gave him Finians rainbow. It won then at the weekend at short price

Has impressed me Daz. Im worried about it, as Rite of Passage was one of my big fancies for Cheltenham(despite having never backed the winner of the Bumper) and he was beaten fair and square, albeit by Dunguib. I got my money on RoP at 7s, so ill stick with it now. :(

Does this mean they think Dunguib is going to win and have massive liabilities and are hoping to reduce them by getting people to back the others in the race?

If you have an iphone, the racing post have a special app with all the cards, news etc... iBetMate is also a cool app that links directly into Betfair. Its about 4 quid.
I got a tip from a lad last year for Punjabi e/w in the Champion Hurdle at massive odds. Did not back it, this year he reckons Medermit has a great chance this year e/w so going for it. 11.5 on betfair at the moment to win and 3.6 to be placed.
This year I am going to try a new strategy of backing horses to place only on betfair in the bigger fields. Last year I had a good few e/ws up, however the losing win portion of the bet ate into the winnings.
If lets say you are betting 10 e/w on a 10/1 shot on pp. If it places, you get 35 back. If its wins you get 145 back. However if you bet 20 on it to place only at 3/1 on Betfair, you get 80 back. Last year I broke even, however with the above strategy would have been up a nice bit.

Ok, heard a quality one there today. Its based off the old roulette system. Back ruby for a tenner in the first race and keep doubling the stake until he wins one. Be warned though after his sixth straight lose, you will be betting 640 on the 7th race:D:D plus you would have already forked out 630 previously :D:D
Thats an old one high rollers used to do.They would start with X amount on the 1st fav of the day at 1 meeting,if it won that was it till the next day were they would start again. If it lost they staked enough on the 2nd race fav to recoup there stake from the 1st race and so on till a fav one.As you could roll up huge liabilities if you had the balls as murphys law states you will eventually have a winner.

I reckon pp is trying to reel in occassional punters with some of these offers. I'd were setting up a new account these would tempt ya over spoilsports or betfair.

still there. click on powerplay on home page
found it.cheers mate.
Edit.
its not enhanced as much as i thought....if you done a normal double on dunguib+quevega, at PP prices you get back €52.50 for a tenner double. ie..10/11 and 7/4
and a tenner double at the enhanced special double..9/2 on them..gets you back €55.00.

I see the Magic Sign, Ladbrokes, have gone Evens on Dunguib, and are only 4/1 on Get Me Out Of Here. I wonder is JP lining up a big punt tomorrow?
Im always reluctant about going too mad in the first race anyway, but I said id have a decent bet if Dunguib went out to Evens, having missed out Ante Post as i was afraid they'd run him in the Champion.

Betfred have an offer in the Supreme that if your horse loses in the race your stake will be refunded up to a maximum of £100. This is an offer too good to refuse, £100 going on Dunguib here anyway even though he is @ 10/11 not the best price, sure its a free bet to nothing.
you can get evens on the exchanges. and its 6/1 get me out of here..and drifting slightly.

Back Dunguib with Betfred @ 10/11 and get Me out of Here @ 4/1 with Paddy Power. They aren't the best prices but its a great offer nonetheless.
If Dunguib wins you will collect with Betfred and get your money back with paddy Power.
If Get Me out of Here wins you collect with Paddy Power and get a free bet with your losing stake off Betfred.
If both lose..........

Just read the T&C's. You won't get the 100 back in monetary terms but as a free bet.

So if your horse loses and you get your free bet, I take it you don't get to keep the stake if your free bet wins?

My take on it is that if your horse loses they give your stake back as a free bet. You can't take the money out and run, its fine if your happy with another bet with them but im sure they are hoping that if they have to return it to customers they will hand it right back with their 'free' bet.
